Sui Reports 40.6 Million TPS in Live Tunnel Test, Not on Its Mainnet

Sui Foundation says its programmable tunnels reached 40,614,180 transactions per second during a live demonstration on October 7, 2026. That is a reported peak for activity inside offchain tunnels—not a claim that Sui’s mainnet processed 40.6 million conventional onchain transactions per second. The tunnels settle to mainnet when they open and close, and CertiK’s post-test review of the evidence was still pending when Sui announced the result.

What Sui’s 40.6 million TPS figure measures

The figure is Sui Foundation’s reported result for activity carried within Sui tunnels, which it describes as programmable offchain state and payment channels. The October 7 demonstration included interactions involving chat, games and payments. In Sui’s model, the interactions between opening and closing a tunnel happen offchain; the opening and closing involve Sui mainnet.

That distinction matters: the headline number describes tunnel-level activity, not the number of ordinary transactions the base layer can execute each second. Sui said more than 10,000 tunnels opened on mainnet during the demonstration. It also said the test surpassed a 20 million TPS target.

How the result compares with Sui’s earlier test

Sui compared the October result with a July 4, 2026 tunnel demonstration that it said reached 6,086,766 TPS. The foundation describes both figures as measurements inside Sui tunnels, so the comparison is between reported tunnel-level results—not a comparison of mainnet throughput with another network’s onchain capacity.

Demonstration Reported rate Measurement context
July 4, 2026 6,086,766 TPS Sui-reported activity inside tunnels
October 7, 2026 40,614,180 TPS Sui-reported activity inside tunnels during a live demonstration

These are figures reported by Sui Foundation; they should not be read as independently established statistical estimates or as conventional onchain TPS.

What was demonstrated—and what remains to be verified

The test took place on the Summit Stage at Sui Basecamp in Singapore, an event held alongside Token2049. Sui said attendees and online participants could follow the demonstration through a purpose-built explorer, which showed tunnel activity across categories including chat, games and payments.

CertiK monitored the attempt live, but live monitoring is not the same as a completed post-test audit. Sui’s announcement said CertiK would examine proofs, execution logs, journals and supporting evidence, then publish a report in the coming days. The announcement did not establish that this review had been completed.

Sui Foundation’s announcement quotes Yuannan Yang, CertiK’s director of security engineering, saying that an objective basis for the results can help build trust in infrastructure for next-generation applications. That is a statement about the value of verification, not a published finding from the pending review.

What the number says about Sui’s design

The demonstration highlights a design in which many interactions can occur away from the base layer while opening and closing tunnels use mainnet. Mysten Labs co-founder and chief product officer Adeniyi Abiodun described Sui as a trust layer for an “agentic economy,” comparing the settlement layer to a court that resolves disputes. That is the company’s framing of the architecture; the TPS figure alone does not establish how the system performs across other workloads or under everyday network conditions.

For readers asking whether Sui “really” hit 40 million TPS, the precise answer is that Sui reported a live tunnel-activity result of 40,614,180 TPS, with CertiK monitoring the event and its post-test examination still pending. It is not evidence that Sui mainnet itself processed that many conventional transactions each second.
