Measure the room’s length, width, and ceiling height, include any adjoining open area, then compare subwoofer output, enclosure type, placement options, and receiver compatibility.
How do you size a subwoofer for your room?
Start with the listening space’s volume rather than floor area alone. Multiply length × width × ceiling height to get cubic feet. If the room opens into another area, include that connected space in your estimate: bass has to energize the broader area, not just the part where the seats are.

How much bass output and headroom do you need?
Think about your normal listening level and the material you play. Explosive movie effects, high playback levels, and a large or open room make output and headroom more important. For music or moderate listening in a small, enclosed room, a very large cabinet may be unnecessary. There is no single driver diameter that determines the right choice for every room; use actual model performance and your listening needs.
Does driver diameter tell you what size to buy?
Driver diameter is one useful clue, not a sizing formula. A larger cone can move more air and may support greater output or deeper bass, but it generally requires a larger enclosure and more floor space. Compare a candidate’s stated performance and cabinet dimensions, rather than assuming that the biggest driver is automatically the best match. Crutchfield’s home theater subwoofer buying guide, published August 10, 2026, also frames the decision around how much bass you want and the space available.

Should you choose a sealed or ported subwoofer?
Both designs can work when matched to the room and integrated properly. SVS describes ported models as offering greater output at the deepest frequencies, making them a common option for large spaces and cinematic impact. A sealed model can suit a smaller space or different listening preference; enclosure type alone does not establish whether a particular subwoofer will perform well in your room.
Where should the subwoofer go?
Room shape and surfaces affect bass response, so the same subwoofer can sound different in different positions. Try a front-wall location, another wall position, and a corner if practical, listening from the main seat. Walls and corners can reinforce bass, but more output is not always smoother or more even. Leave a port unobstructed; Klipsch recommends at least twice the port-exit diameter between the port opening and the nearest wall in its placement guidance.

Try a sub crawl
- Temporarily place the subwoofer near the main listening position.
- Play bass-heavy material at a normal listening level.
- Listen at feasible subwoofer locations, including wall and corner positions, and note which sounds most balanced from the seat.
- Move the subwoofer to the preferred location and check the result from the listening position.
Crutchfield and Klipsch describe versions of this placement method. It is a practical listening aid, not a substitute for measurement or a guarantee of an ideal result. See Crutchfield’s subwoofer connection guide and Klipsch’s location advice.
Would two subwoofers be better than one?
One subwoofer is a reasonable starting point. A second may add headroom and make bass more consistent across several seats, especially in a larger room or seating area. The improvement depends on placement and calibration; adding another unit does not automatically fix uneven bass. Try practical placement options and calibrate the system before deciding that you need a second subwoofer.

What should you check for receiver integration?
- Confirm that the receiver has a compatible subwoofer output and that the cable can reach the intended location.
- Plan around both signal and power: a wireless subwoofer kit can help when a cable run would prevent suitable placement, but a powered subwoofer still needs electrical power.
- Use the receiver’s bass-management settings and run its available auto-calibration after placement changes.
- Check the speaker and receiver manuals for crossover guidance. Klipsch offers a starting suggestion of about 10 Hz above the main speakers’ lowest-frequency range; treat this as manufacturer guidance, not a universal setting.
After setup, the subwoofer should blend with the main speakers rather than call attention to itself. Klipsch describes the goal as making it seem that the main speakers “go deeper with greater impact and authority” in its placement guidance.
Which subwoofer should you choose?
For each candidate, compare the factors that directly affect whether it will work in your system:
Best Value
- [ Deep & Powerful 8-Inch Bass ]: Experience 35Hz deep bass with the T5s powered subwoofer, which features an 8-inch long-throw woofer and a powerful 70W RMS output (driven by Class-D amplifier). Perfect for home audio and home theater.
- [ Precision Control, Seamless Integration ]: Adjust the low-pass filter (30Hz–160Hz) and phase selector (0°/180°) to match any home stereo or active speaker setup.
- [ Slim Design, Low Distortion ]: This space-saving compact subwoofer fits into any spaces. The 18mm MDF cabinet with a front-firing driver and right-firing acoustic port minimizes resonance for clean, tight bass. Its wood grain finish and low-profile grille blend seamlessly with home decor.
- [ Smart & Energy-Efficient ]: Auto-standby saves power after 15 minutes of inactivity. The built-in amplifier ensures plug-and-play operation – no external receiver needed! Includes 3.5mm-to-RCA and RCA cables for instant setup.
- [ Two Connections ]: ① Sub out-equipped speakers/amps: RCA to T5s’ Signal In; main speaker connects directly to audio source. ② No sub out: Connect T5s in series (audio source → T5s’ Signal In → T5s’ Signal Out → main speaker). Note: For ②, main speaker requires LINE IN (Bluetooth/USB/optical/non-wired not supported).
- Room volume, including connected open areas
- Desired maximum output and headroom for music, movies, or both
- Low-frequency extension and sealed versus ported enclosure
- Cabinet dimensions and feasible placement locations
- Whether one subwoofer covers your seats or a second may help
- Receiver connection, cable reach, and available calibration features
Without your room dimensions, preferred listening level, speakers, and listening preferences, no exact driver size or model can be selected reliably. Use the room-volume estimate to narrow the options, then confirm each model’s actual output and dimensions and test placement in your room.
