Short answer: In the U.S. examples available, a frozen pizza has the lower sticker price, while Subway sells one prepared footlong Pizza Sub. That is not an apples-to-apples win for either side: a frozen package may cover more than one meal, and the Subway price varies by restaurant. The better value is the option whose price matches the amount you will actually eat, after local offers and the work of preparing it are considered.
Use your local Subway price and the frozen pie’s labeled weight and servings. Then compare the cost of one meal—not simply one sandwich with one unopened package.

What “Subway footlong pizza” means in this comparison
The U.S. menu evidence does not show a separate product named “footlong pizza.” It shows a Pizza Sub in a Footlong size. The cited menu describes spicy pepperoni, provolone, marinara, green peppers and onions on Artisan Italian bread. In other words, this is a hot, prepared sandwich built with pizza-style ingredients, not a round frozen or restaurant-baked pizza.

Prices shown by the cited U.S. listings
Restaurant and grocery prices change with location, inventory, taxes and promotions. The figures below are dated listing examples, not a national Subway price, an average frozen-pizza price or a promise that a store will charge the same amount today.
Subway Footlong Pizza Sub examples
| Restaurant menu page | Listed Footlong price | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Store 11301-0 | $6.99 | Location-specific menu listing before any applicable tax or offer |
| Store 21949-0 | $6.09 | Location-specific menu listing |
| Store 34036-0 | $7.49 | Location-specific menu listing |
| Store 32242-0 | $8.29 | Location-specific menu listing |
| Store 54653-0 | $8.95 | Location-specific menu listing |
These five pages span $6.09 to $8.95. That range is why a national “Subway costs exactly…” statement would be misleading. Enter your store in the Subway app or website, check the current menu, and apply the offer you would genuinely use.
Frozen-pizza package examples
| Product listed by Walmart | Package weight | Listed package price |
|---|---|---|
| DiGiorno Rising Crust Three Meat with Cheese | 27.1 oz | $5.97 |
| DiGiorno Classic Crust Meat and Cheese | 19.1 oz | $4.88 |
| Tombstone Supreme | 20.8 oz | $4.82 |
The examples come from Walmart’s frozen-pizza category and its DiGiorno category. They are retailer-, store- and time-dependent snapshots. They do not establish the cheapest frozen pizza in every market, and a different size or promotion can change the result.

A Subway price buys one prepared Footlong Pizza Sub. A frozen-pizza price buys a package whose serving count and net weight may support multiple eating occasions. Comparing $6.99 with $5.97 without adjusting for portions treats unlike quantities as equivalent.
For a rough package-size view, divide the listed price by the listed ounces. Using only the three Walmart examples above produces these calculations:
| Frozen pizza | Calculation from listing | Approximate cost per ounce |
|---|---|---|
| DiGiorno Rising Crust Three Meat with Cheese, 27.1 oz | $5.97 ÷ 27.1 oz | 22.0¢ per oz |
| DiGiorno Classic Crust Meat and Cheese, 19.1 oz | $4.88 ÷ 19.1 oz | 25.5¢ per oz |
| Tombstone Supreme, 20.8 oz | $4.82 ÷ 20.8 oz | 23.2¢ per oz |
Those are calculations from the displayed prices and weights, not values published by Walmart. An ounce includes crust and toppings, so cost per ounce is only a size-adjustment tool. It does not measure freshness, taste, cooking time, electricity, appetite or how much of the pie remains.
How to calculate the cost of the meal you will eat
Use the package’s labeled servings when they reasonably match your portions. If the label says four servings and you eat two, the meal uses about half the package; if you eat the entire pie, the meal uses the full package. Labels are a starting point, not a guarantee that every person will eat the stated serving.
Recommended Free Tools
- Record the actual local prices. Write down the Footlong price at the Subway restaurant you would visit and the shelf or online price for the frozen pizza you would buy. Include a coupon only if you qualify for it and would use it at checkout.
- Read the frozen package. Note net weight, labeled servings per container and serving size. Keep the exact product and size; a 19.1-ounce pie is not interchangeable with a 27.1-ounce pie.
- Estimate your share. Decide whether you will eat one serving, half the package, the whole package or a different fraction. Also decide whether leftovers will actually become a later meal rather than food that is discarded.
- Convert to a meal cost. Multiply the package price by the fraction consumed. For example, eating one-half of a $5.97 pie assigns $2.985—about $2.99—to that meal, while eating the entire pie assigns the full $5.97. That arithmetic is an illustration; your package label and appetite control the fraction.
- Compare like with like. Compare one Footlong meal with the frozen portion you plan to eat. If two people share the frozen pie, divide the price by the number of portions they actually consume, not by an assumed serving count.
- Keep preparation separate. Record whether you value Subway’s ready-to-eat service or are willing to store, preheat and cook the frozen product. The available listings do not provide a defensible dollar value for your time or oven energy, so do not invent one.
Worked scenarios using the listed prices
One person, one immediate meal
Suppose your local Subway menu shows $6.99 and you want one prepared Footlong. The listed $5.97 frozen example costs less at the register, but you must determine how much of the 27.1-ounce pie you will eat. If you eat the whole pie now, the comparison is $6.99 versus $5.97 for the respective items. If you eat half and reliably save the other half, the first meal uses roughly $2.99 of the frozen package’s price, with the remaining value reserved for another meal.
This scenario favors the frozen option on purchase price and can favor it more on meal cost when the leftovers are used. It does not say the two meals have equal size, toppings or eating experience.
Two diners sharing one frozen pie
Two people who split the $5.97 package consume approximately $2.985 of package value each, before considering whether the labeled serving sizes match their appetites. Two Footlong Pizza Subs at a $6.99 local price would cost $13.98 before tax and offers. The comparison is useful only if each diner would otherwise order a whole Footlong and both people are satisfied with the frozen pie’s size.

A single diner who wants no leftovers
If you will not save food and the frozen package is larger than you want, its low sticker price may not translate into value. You could still pay less than the Subway price, but you would be buying food you do not intend to use. Conversely, a very hungry diner may regard a package that supplies a second meal as a better purchase than one Footlong, even when the package takes longer to prepare.
Portion and nutrition context
Subway’s U.S. nutrition document dated January 2026 treats one Footlong as two 6-inch servings. In that document, a 6-inch Pizza Sub is listed at 177 grams and 490 calories. Doubling those entries gives 354 grams and 980 calories for a Footlong by that document’s convention.
Individual Subway menu pages can display different nutrition totals, so do not combine a number from one page with a number from another without checking the source and date. Frozen pizzas likewise require their own package label for calories, serving size and servings per container. These figures describe portions; they are not a health recommendation and do not make the products nutritionally equivalent.
Convenience and cooking are part of the value decision
What Subway supplies
- The sandwich is assembled and heated for you at the restaurant.
- You avoid freezer storage, oven preheating and cooking cleanup.
- You receive one defined Footlong portion, which can reduce leftover decisions.
- The listed Pizza Sub build is a sandwich with pepperoni, provolone, marinara, green peppers and onions on Artisan Italian bread.
What frozen pizza supplies
- The package can be stored and divided across meals, depending on the product’s label and your behavior.
- You choose among different crusts, toppings, weights and formats; the three cited examples are not the same recipe or size.
- You must follow the package’s cooking directions and have suitable storage and equipment.
- Leftovers can be an advantage only when they are safely stored and actually eaten later; the price listings alone cannot establish that outcome.
Do not turn “faster” or “more convenient” into an unsupported dollar figure. Instead, state which task you are willing to do. Someone ordering during a commute may value immediate preparation; someone planning several home meals may value a package that can be portioned.
Style and topping differences can change perceived value
The Pizza Sub’s ingredients and bread create a sandwich experience. Frozen products use their own crust thickness, cheese blend, sauce and topping distribution. The cited DiGiorno Rising Crust, DiGiorno Classic Crust and Tombstone Supreme listings differ in crust and topping format as well as weight. A lower cost per ounce does not mean a product is a substitute for the sandwich you wanted.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Make the style decision before doing arithmetic: are you seeking a portable sub, a round pizza, a particular crust, pepperoni, meat toppings or a shareable dinner? Price comparisons are meaningful only after the food format meets your requirement.
A fair comparison starts with the decision unit
Decide what you are buying before choosing a winner. The Subway unit is one Footlong Pizza Sub, while the frozen unit is an entire package. For a solo lunch, the relevant number may be the cost of the portion eaten today. For a household dinner, it may be the total cost to feed everyone. For meal planning, it may be the number of usable meals produced by one package.
Those are different questions, so one calculation cannot answer all of them. Keep three figures visible: the checkout price, the estimated value consumed today and the estimated value left for a later meal. A $5.97 pie is cheaper at checkout than an $8.95 Footlong, but the frozen option requires you to use the remainder for that advantage to persist. Conversely, buying a whole frozen pie for one small appetite can create waste that the simple package-price comparison hides.
When the local price changes the result
The spread in the cited Subway listings is $2.86 from the lowest example ($6.09) to the highest ($8.95). At the low end, Subway may be close to the price of a frozen package, especially if you do not want leftovers. At the high end, a $5.97 frozen package leaves a larger upfront gap. A valid conclusion must therefore name the store price used, not just the brand.
Promotions can reverse a result, but only for an eligible purchase. Compare the final qualifying Subway price with the current grocery price for the exact frozen product and size. Do not apply a bundle discount to one sandwich if the promotion requires multiple items, and do not treat a sale price as permanent.

Questions to answer at the shelf or checkout
- Is the Subway listing for the Footlong Pizza Sub, rather than a 6-inch item or another sandwich?
- Is the displayed price before tax, and does the app show a different price or offer?
- What is the frozen pizza’s exact net weight and serving count?
- Will one person eat the whole pie, or will two people share it?
- Will leftovers be stored and eaten, or are they likely to be discarded?
- Do you have the freezer space, oven and time needed for the frozen product?
- Are you comparing similar topping preferences, or is one option being chosen for a different craving?
Answering these questions prevents a false precision that a cost-per-ounce figure cannot provide.
A repeatable local comparison checklist
- Open the menu for the specific Subway restaurant, not a generic national page.
- Confirm that the displayed item is the Footlong Pizza Sub and record the current price.
- Check available Subway offers, then verify the final qualifying price before treating the offer as part of the comparison.
- At the grocery retailer, select the exact frozen product, size and current price you would place in your cart.
- Photograph or write down the package’s net weight, servings per container and serving size.
- Estimate the fraction each eater will consume today and whether the remainder has a planned use.
- Calculate package price multiplied by the fraction eaten; keep the full checkout price visible as a separate figure.
- Note preparation requirements without assigning an invented cost to electricity or your time.
- Recheck stock and price on the day you buy. The Walmart examples are snapshots, and Subway listings vary by restaurant.
Pitfalls that produce a false “winner”
Using one Subway price as a national price
The cited menu pages range from $6.09 to $8.95. A conclusion based on $6.99 may reverse at a restaurant charging $8.95 or at one offering a qualifying discount. Always label the store and date context.
Comparing a whole package with one sandwich
A frozen-pizza package is a quantity, not automatically one meal. Divide by the fraction consumed and account for usable leftovers.
Treating cost per ounce as cost per serving
Weight includes crust and toppings, and serving sizes differ by product. Cost per ounce helps normalize package size but cannot tell you the number of satisfying meals.
Ignoring the product format
A Pizza Sub and a round pie can have different appeal even when their prices are close. Crust, bread, toppings and portability belong in the decision.
Counting an offer you cannot use
A coupon, app promotion or bundle should affect your calculation only when it is available to you for that purchase. A displayed base price and a qualified checkout price are different facts.
Forgetting tax and local availability
The cited menu figures are listed prices, and the Walmart figures are retailer snapshots. Tax, delivery, stock and local promotions can change what you actually pay. Use the final price shown for your location when making a household budget decision.
So, which is better value?
Choose the frozen pizza when its package price is lower, its portions fit your appetite and you will use the leftovers. The cited Walmart examples cost $4.82 to $5.97 per package and contain 19.1 to 27.1 ounces, so one package can cover more than one eating occasion for some households.
Choose the Subway Footlong Pizza Sub when you want one prepared sandwich now, do not want to cook or store leftovers, and the local price is acceptable. The cited Subway restaurant pages show why checking the exact store matters: the Footlong listings run from $6.09 to $8.95.
There is no universal winner because the sources do not establish one equivalent portion, one national price or one appetite. The defensible comparison is your local out-of-pocket price against the fraction of frozen pizza you will actually eat, with preparation and food format kept visible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Subway’s footlong pizza a whole pizza?
No. The U.S. menu identifies it as a Footlong Pizza Sub: spicy pepperoni, provolone, marinara, green peppers and onions on Artisan Italian bread. It is a prepared sandwich, not a round frozen pizza.
How much does a Subway Footlong Pizza Sub cost?
The cited U.S. restaurant pages list $6.09, $6.99, $7.49, $8.29 and $8.95. These are location-specific examples, so check your restaurant or Subway app for the current price, tax and eligible offers.
What frozen-pizza prices were used for comparison?
Walmart listings show DiGiorno Rising Crust Three Meat with Cheese, 27.1 ounces, at $5.97; DiGiorno Classic Crust Meat and Cheese, 19.1 ounces, at $4.88; and Tombstone Supreme, 20.8 ounces, at $4.82. Prices and stock vary by location and date.
Is frozen pizza cheaper per ounce?
In these listed examples, the calculated costs are about 22.0 cents, 25.5 cents and 23.2 cents per ounce, respectively. Cost per ounce includes crust and toppings and does not show how many satisfying meals you will get.
How should I compare one Subway meal with a frozen pie?
Compare the local Footlong price with the fraction of the frozen package you will eat. Multiply the frozen package price by that fraction, then account separately for leftovers, storage and cooking effort.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes Subway’s nutrition information treat a Footlong as two servings?
The January 2026 U.S. nutrition document lists one 6-inch Pizza Sub at 177 grams and 490 calories and treats a Footlong as two 6-inch servings. That convention gives 354 grams and 980 calories; check the dated source because individual menu pages can differ.
Which option is better for two people?
A frozen pie may cost less per person when two diners share it, but confirm that its size and labeled servings satisfy both appetites. Two Footlongs cost twice the local Footlong price, before tax and offers.
When is Subway the better value?
Subway can fit better when you want one ready-to-eat sandwich, do not want to cook or store leftovers, and the local price is acceptable. Convenience is part of the choice, but no unsupported dollar value should be assigned to time or oven energy.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Frozen pizza usually has the lower upfront price in the cited U.S. examples, while Subway provides one prepared Footlong Pizza Sub. Compare your local checkout price with the portion you will actually eat and use, then choose the format and convenience level that match your meal.
