Subtitles and Closed Captions Not Working on HBO Max? Fixes That Usually Work

Most HBO Max caption problems come from a disabled or unavailable track, device accessibility settings, an outdated app or operating system, or a title-specific playback error—not from your subscription plan. During playback, open the speech-bubble Audio and Subtitles menu, confirm the title offers the track you need, and try another title. Then check device settings, update the app and device, restart completely, and only then clear data or reinstall.

First, identify what is failing

“Captions are not working” can mean several different things. The correct fix depends on the symptom:

• No caption or subtitle text appears.
• The desired language is missing.
• Captions are delayed or ahead of speech.
• Text is too small, faint, cropped, or otherwise unreadable.
• Captions remain on after you choose Off.
• Captions work on a phone or computer but not on a television.
• The Audio and Subtitles button is missing.
• Your choice does not persist after you leave the title.
• Audio description is playing instead of ordinary dialogue audio.

Check whether the title actually has captions

HBO Max says subtitle and caption availability varies by title, language, region, and edition. Start the movie or episode, open the speech-bubble Audio and Subtitles menu, and look for the requested language or an option labeled English – CC.

Subtitles generally show translated or spoken dialogue. Closed captions can also identify speakers and important sounds, so choose English – CC when you need accessibility information rather than dialogue alone. If the menu has no caption track for one episode but captions appear on another title, your device is probably not the cause. Test the same episode on another supported device. If the track is missing everywhere, report the title and episode to HBO Max as a likely catalog or metadata problem.

Turn captions on or off in the HBO Max player

Phone or tablet

1. Start playback and tap the screen.
2. Tap the speech-bubble Audio and Subtitles icon.
3. Under Subtitles, choose a language or English – CC.
4. Choose Off to disable captions, then close the menu.

On phones and tablets, caption appearance is controlled mainly by the device’s accessibility settings and may not carry over to other devices.

Computer browser

1. Start or pause the video and move the pointer over the player.
2. Click Audio and Subtitles.
3. Select the subtitle or caption track, or choose Off.
4. Close the menu and resume playback.

On the web, styling is generally available under your profile’s Settings > Subtitle Style.

TV, streaming player, or game console

1. Start playback and pause if needed.
2. Open the on-screen Audio and Subtitles control.
3. Select the language, English – CC, or Off.
4. Use the back button or the device’s close control to save the choice.

Remote buttons and menu behavior vary among Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android/Google TV, Samsung and LG televisions, PlayStation, and Xbox; there is no single reliable sequence for every model.

If captions will not turn off

HBO Max follows some device-level caption preferences. If selecting Off in the player has no effect, inspect the accessibility settings on the device, then restart HBO Max.

After checking the device setting, sign out of HBO Max, power the device off completely (not sleep mode), wait about 10 seconds, turn it back on, and sign in again. This sequence is part of HBO Max’s general troubleshooting guidance at help.max.com/us-en/answer/detail/000002521.

Fix captions on phones and tablets

Update the app and operating system

Install any pending HBO Max update from Google Play or the App Store, and install available Android or iOS/iPadOS updates. Menu names and supported versions change over time.

Clear Android cache or data

1. Open Settings and search for HBO Max.
2. Open the app’s settings and choose Storage & cache or Storage.
3. Tap Clear cache.
4. If the problem remains, use Clear storage or Clear data, then sign in again.

Clearing data removes local app information and normally signs you out. iPhone and iPad users should restart, update, and reinstall rather than look for an equivalent system cache button.

Reinstall only after simpler steps

Uninstall HBO Max, restart the device if possible, and reinstall it from Google Play or the App Store. HBO Max does not support unofficial APKs or other unofficial installations; use the official store described at help.hbomax.com/us/Answer/Detail/000002506.

Fix captions on smart TVs and streaming devices

Update first

• Fire TV: Highlight HBO Max, press the remote’s Menu button, then choose More Info > Update.
• Roku: Highlight the HBO Max channel, press *, and check for an update.
• Apple TV: Open the App Store, find HBO Max, and choose Update.
• Android TV: Highlight HBO Max, press and hold Select, then choose View Details > Update.

These labels can differ by device software and region. Update the television or streaming player’s system software as well.

Clear cache on supported devices

On Fire TV, use Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > HBO Max > Force Stop > Clear Cache. If necessary, choose Clear Data and sign in again.

Some Samsung televisions provide Home > Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage > HBO Max > View Details > Clear cache / Clear data. HBO Max notes that these controls are not available on every Samsung model; see help.max.com/us-en/answer/detail/000002519.

Reinstall or use another player

If updating, checking accessibility settings, and clearing cache do not help, uninstall and reinstall HBO Max from the device’s official app store. If the built-in TV app is unsupported or unreliable, use a supported Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Google TV Streamer, AirPlay, Chromecast, or an HDMI connection from a supported computer. A replacement player cannot add a caption track that the title itself does not provide.

Fix HBO Max captions in a browser

1. Use a current supported version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge on Windows, or Safari.
2. Try the same title in a private or InPrivate window.
3. Temporarily disable ad blockers and media or privacy extensions.
4. Allow third-party cookies if the player or caption menu fails to load.
5. Clear the browser’s cache and cookies, sign in again, and test.
6. Try another supported browser.

A stable picture with missing captions usually points to track selection, metadata, browser, or device behavior rather than internet speed; HBO Max’s 5 Mbps HD figure is a general streaming threshold, not a caption requirement.

When captions are delayed, wrong, too small, or unreadable

Delayed or ahead of speech

Rewind and resume, try another episode, restart the app, update the app and device, and test another device. If timing is wrong only for one title or episode, report it as a title-level problem instead of repeatedly reinstalling every device.

Wrong language or wrong track

Reopen Audio and Subtitles and select the exact language or English – CC track. If the desired language is not listed, HBO Max may not offer it for that title or region.

Text is too small, faint, or cropped

Adjust font size, color, opacity, background, and edge style in the device’s caption-style settings. Also check for television overscan or cropping. Styling changes made on one device may not carry to another.

Test another title, device, and network

Use this sequence to isolate the fault:

1. Play a different title on the original device.
2. Play the affected title on a phone or computer.
3. If possible, test another device on the same Wi-Fi network.
4. Compare results before clearing data or reinstalling.

• Only one title fails: suspect missing captions or a title-specific metadata defect.
• Every title fails on one device: focus on that device’s app, firmware, accessibility settings, cache, or compatibility.
• Multiple titles fail on multiple devices: update, sign out, fully restart, clear cache or reinstall, then contact support.

Confirm that your device is supported

Unsupported hardware can look like a caption bug. HBO Max’s U.S. device list changes, but currently includes Android 7.1 or later phones and tablets, iOS 16.4 or later iPhone/iPad/iPod touch devices, Fire TV with Fire OS 6 or Vega OS 1 or later, Android TV OS 7.1 or later, Apple TV HD or 4K with tvOS 16.4 or later, Hisense VIDAA OS 6.0 or later, LG webOS 3.5 or later, and supported PC, Mac, and Chromebook browsers. Do not upgrade your subscription to fix captions. HBO Max’s plan information does not identify a plan tier as a remedy for ordinary subtitle or caption failures.

When to contact HBO Max support

Contact support when a caption track is missing on multiple supported devices, one episode consistently has incorrect timing, or the player control is absent after updates and reinstall. Have these details ready:

• Title, season, and episode
• Caption language or track selected
• Device model and operating-system version
• HBO Max app or browser version
• Whether another title works
• Whether the same title works on another device
• Any exact error message or code

Providing the precise title and error information helps distinguish a device fault from a catalog or playback defect. Older official pages may still use the “Max” name and help.max.com address; follow the equivalent controls in the current HBO Max app.
