Start with Subnautica if you want the most established solo-first entry. Choose Below Zero if you want a separate follow-up and need broad console or Nintendo Switch availability. Choose Subnautica 2 if playing online with friends is central to your decision and you accept an Early Access game that will change over time.
All three are underwater survival adventures, but they serve different priorities: a predictable finished release, portable-console access, or optional cross-platform co-op. The comparison below separates what is documented from what remains uncertain, so you can buy the right version without assuming that every game has the same features.

Subnautica games at a glance

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subnautica | Established release; first released on PC in January 2018, later reaching PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. | The cited release information does not document co-op. | PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are documented in the cited release record. | Players who want the safest solo-first starting point. |
| Subnautica: Below Zero | Established release; console release recorded for May 14, 2021. | The cited release information does not document co-op. | Console availability includes Nintendo Switch in the cited release record. | Players seeking a follow-up in a colder setting or a portable-console edition. |
| Subnautica 2 | Steam lists an Early Access release date of May 14, 2026. Development is ongoing. | Single-player, optional online co-op for up to three friends, and cross-platform multiplayer are listed on Steam. | Steam documentation is available; Xbox is also identified in the cited platform information. Verify the exact edition on your platform before purchase. | Groups that want optional online co-op and can tolerate evolving content. |
The most important distinction is not the sequel number. It is whether you value a settled campaign or a changing game with multiplayer built into its current plan. The earlier releases provide a more predictable purchase; the newer title is the only one in this comparison with an official listing for online co-op.
Which game should you play first?
Choose Subnautica for a solo-first introduction
The original is the clearest starting recommendation when you are new to the series and intend to play alone. Its release history is established, and the available record places its first PC release in January 2018, followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. That gives you a known, mature release rather than a moving target.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Starting here also avoids making multiplayer availability the deciding factor when you have not yet established whether the underwater-survival format suits you. You can learn the series’ basic rhythm at your own pace, then decide whether you want a related follow-up or a newer co-op-focused experience.
Choose Below Zero when platform access matters most
Below Zero is the practical choice for someone who wants a separate Subnautica adventure and specifically needs a console or portable option. Its release record documents a May 14, 2021 console launch and includes Nintendo Switch availability. Check the store page for your region and hardware, because editions and current stock can change.
It is also a sensible second purchase after the original if you prefer established releases. The available evidence identifies it as an open-world survival action-adventure, but it does not provide a verified biome count, campaign-length comparison, or complete feature matrix. Do not choose it on the assumption that it is simply “the same game, only bigger”; use it as a distinct follow-up whose setting and presentation are different.
Choose Subnautica 2 when co-op is the priority
Subnautica 2 is the only title here with an explicit official multiplayer description. Steam says it is being crafted as a single-player experience that you can optionally play online with up to three friends. That means solo play remains part of the design, while a group can reach four participants when the host and three friends are included.
The trade-off is Early Access. Steam lists May 14, 2026 as the Early Access release date, and the description says planned updates will add more biomes, creatures, craftables, features and narratives. Treat the current build as an evolving version, not a finished campaign with a guaranteed final scope.

What the completion difference means in practice
Established releases offer predictable expectations
With Subnautica and Below Zero, you are buying games that have already had their principal release process. That does not mean every platform receives identical patches or that every future storefront policy is fixed. It does mean your decision can focus on the existing experience instead of whether a roadmap item will arrive.
- Choose an established release when you want to begin a campaign without waiting for major systems or story additions.
- Choose one when you dislike balance changes, unfinished content, or save-compatibility concerns associated with development builds.
- Choose one when you are buying as a gift and need the recipient to receive a conventional, settled product.
Early Access is a different buying contract
Early Access lets you play while development continues. In this case, the official description explicitly anticipates additions to the world, creatures, crafting, features and narrative. Those plans explain the direction, but they do not establish a final delivery schedule, final content count, or an unchanged save experience.

How multiplayer changes the choice
What is confirmed for Subnautica 2
Steam lists three relevant features together: single-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. The official wording makes co-op optional, so you do not need a permanent group to use the game. You can begin alone and invite up to three friends when you want a shared session.
“Cross-platform” describes the multiplayer capability listed by Steam; it does not, by itself, tell you which combinations of PC, Xbox or other editions are supported at a particular moment. Confirm that your edition and your friends’ editions are included before purchase, especially if one person is using a console version that launched later.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

What is not established for the earlier games
The cited records for Subnautica and Below Zero do not document co-op modes. That is different from proving that no unofficial or platform-specific multiplayer option has ever existed. For a buying decision, however, you should treat both earlier games as solo-first unless the current store listing for your exact edition says otherwise.

Platform and edition guidance
PC players
The original’s PC debut is recorded as January 2018. Steam also lists Subnautica 2 and identifies its Early Access status there. Read the store page for the exact operating-system requirements, controller support and edition notes before checkout; those details are not established in the available release records.
PlayStation and Xbox players
The original release record documents PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. The cited information also identifies Xbox availability for Subnautica 2. Console generations, backward compatibility and regional storefront listings can differ, so confirm the product page for your console rather than inferring support from a different edition.
Nintendo Switch players
Below Zero has documented Nintendo Switch availability through its console release record. If portable play is a requirement, it is the clearest fit among these three based on the information available here. Verify whether you are purchasing the correct digital or physical edition and whether the listing is available in your region.

Cross-platform groups
A mixed group should begin with the multiplayer listing, not with the title number. Subnautica 2 is the only game in this comparison whose Steam entry explicitly combines online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Even then, check that all players are on supported versions and that the storefronts use compatible releases. Do not assume that cross-platform multiplayer also means cross-save, shared purchases or identical update timing.
Decision guide by player type

Recommended play orders
For a solo player who wants the lowest-risk route
- Start with Subnautica.
- Move to Below Zero if you want another established underwater survival adventure.
- Try Subnautica 2 after reading its current Early Access notes and deciding that evolving content is acceptable.
This order lets you test the format before committing to a developing release. It also keeps the co-op decision separate from the question of whether you enjoy solo survival exploration.
For a group buying together
- Confirm that every player’s platform and storefront are supported by the current Subnautica 2 listing.
- Decide whether all players accept Early Access changes, including additions and possible revisions to existing systems.
- Use the game’s optional solo capability as a fallback for members who cannot join every session.
Do not choose Subnautica or Below Zero as a group purchase on the assumption that the cited records confirm co-op. Their documented value is as established solo releases.
For a portable-console buyer
- Check the Nintendo eShop or your local retailer for the Below Zero edition.
- Confirm region, language, storage requirements and whether the listing is digital or physical.
- Buy the original or Subnautica 2 on another platform only if you also want a separate home-console or PC experience.
How to evaluate Subnautica 2 Early Access before buying
Because the game is designed to evolve, use a checklist rather than relying on a single trailer or a promise of future content.
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the current store description: Confirm that the Early Access label is still present and note the latest statement about planned additions.
- Check multiplayer wording: Verify online co-op, the three-friend limit and cross-platform support on the edition you intend to purchase.
- Match platforms: Make a list of every player’s device and storefront; do not infer compatibility from the phrase “cross-platform” alone.
- Set expectations about scope: Planned biomes, creatures, craftables, features and narratives are a direction for development, not a promise of a particular final count.
- Protect your time: If you want a completed campaign with no roadmap uncertainty, choose an established release instead.
- Discuss group commitment: A co-op game is only useful if the group can tolerate patches, changing progression and uneven availability.
Buying and bundle considerations
Prices, discounts, regional editions and retailer stock are not fixed facts in the available release information. Check the store page for your country on the day you buy rather than relying on an old price or a third-party listing.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Steam lists the original Subnautica and Below Zero together in an official bundle. Whether an equivalent bundle exists on another retailer, whether it is discounted, and whether it includes the editions you need must be confirmed on that retailer’s current page. A bundle is useful for a solo player who already expects to play both established releases; it does not replace Subnautica 2’s multiplayer feature.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming the newest game is automatically the best first game
A sequel number does not remove Early Access risk. If your priority is a settled solo campaign, the original remains the more straightforward recommendation.
Assuming every platform has the same feature set
Platform support and multiplayer compatibility can vary by edition. Verify the exact storefront entry, console generation and cross-platform combination before purchasing for a group.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Treating a roadmap as completed content
The planned additions listed for Subnautica 2 indicate intended development areas. They do not establish how many biomes, creatures, craftables or narrative elements will ship, nor when each addition will arrive.
Buying an older title for co-op
The cited information does not document co-op for Subnautica or Below Zero. Choose them for solo play unless a current listing for your edition explicitly says otherwise.
Ignoring portability requirements
If you need a handheld console, verify the Switch edition before checkout. A PC or home-console release is not a substitute for portable availability.
Bottom line
Subnautica is the best default starting point for a solo player. Below Zero is the established follow-up to choose when its colder setting or documented Nintendo Switch availability fits your needs. Subnautica 2 is the right experiment for players who specifically want optional online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, provided they are comfortable with Early Access changes and an unfinished roadmap.
