It is aimed at data-centre, cloud and enterprise traffic—not household broadband.
The project is scheduled to reach Ready for Service in June 2028, subject to construction and delivery.

What SUBCO announced
SUBCO announced SM-1 on 13 October 2026. The project is an 850-kilometre terrestrial route between Australia’s two largest data-centre markets. Data Center Dynamics reported the same route length, capacity floor and delivery target on 15 October.

SM-1 is planned with a minimum of 96 fibre pairs. That design gives operators a large amount of dark-fibre and wavelength capacity for traffic growth, rather than positioning the route as a consumer internet service.
#1 Best Overall
- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability

- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
Why the route matters to Australian networks
More physical diversity between the two cities
SUBCO describes SM-1 as a brand-new, independent path. A separate physical corridor can reduce the impact of a cut, maintenance event or equipment failure affecting an existing Sydney–Melbourne route. Independence is useful only when the associated ducts, rights of way, power systems and landing or facility entrances are also separated; the announcement establishes the route’s intended independence but does not publish detailed engineering maps.
Capacity for cloud and AI traffic
SUBCO says demand is being driven by hyperscale-cloud expansion, artificial-intelligence workloads and growing enterprise data requirements. A 96-pair minimum gives carriers, cloud providers and large organisations room to provision multiple services over the same corridor as demand increases.

Domestic resilience rather than a new international cable
SM-1 is terrestrial inter-capital transport. It does not replace SUBCO’s subsea systems or add a new international landing; it adds another domestic path between the Sydney and Melbourne markets.

In a March 2026 release, SUBCO said its Sydney–Melbourne service already spans two geographically independent paths and combines subsea and terrestrial connectivity. The company listed access points at facilities operated by NextDC, Equinix, AirTrunk and CDC in Sydney and Melbourne, alongside named sites in Adelaide and Perth.

That earlier service provides the context for SM-1: the new route is intended to extend a multi-path design with another independent terrestrial corridor. SUBCO has not published a total number of data-centre access locations, so claims of a specific national count should not be inferred from the named facilities.
SM-1 compared with currently described Sydney–Melbourne options
| Comparison point | SM-1 | Existing SUBCO Sydney–Melbourne service | Other routes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical design | New, independent terrestrial path planned between Sydney and Melbourne | Two geographically independent paths combining subsea and terrestrial connectivity, according to SUBCO’s March 2026 release | Not stated in the available announcement |
| Fibre-pair capacity | Minimum 96 fibre pairs | Not stated | Not stated |
| Latency | Not published | Not published | Not stated |
| Data-centre and cloud access | Intended to connect directly with data-centre and cloud on-ramps; a SM-1-specific facility list has not been published | Access points named at NextDC, Equinix, AirTrunk and CDC facilities in Sydney and Melbourne, with additional sites named in Adelaide and Perth | Not stated |
| Delivery timing | Ready for Service target: June 2028 | Service described as existing in March 2026 | Not stated |
| Resilience objective | Reduce dependence on existing inter-capital routes through a separate physical corridor | Already provides two geographically independent paths | Not stated |
The absence of a published SM-1 latency figure matters. Route length alone cannot establish end-to-end delay: fibre design, optical equipment, facility entry points and the actual service path all affect the result. Buyers should wait for engineering specifications or service-level documentation before making latency claims.

When will SM-1 be ready?
SUBCO’s target is June 2028 Ready for Service. That is a planned milestone, not a completed deployment or a guaranteed activation date. Civil works, permits, access agreements, procurement, testing and commissioning can all affect the schedule. Until SUBCO publishes construction milestones or a revised notice, June 2028 should be treated as prospective.
What the announcement means for data-centre operators
Operators with facilities in Sydney and Melbourne could eventually use SM-1 as a physically diverse domestic path for replication, backup, cloud interconnection and latency-sensitive enterprise applications. Its value will depend on which buildings and carrier hotels receive direct access, how providers price protected and unprotected services, and whether the route is diverse all the way into each customer’s facility.

Compatible with Cisco, Ubiquiti, Mikrotik, Juniper, HPE, Arista, TP-Link, Netgear, Intel, Fortinet, Zyxel, Mellanox, Supermicro, Huawei, ZTE, Brocade, D-Link, and others.
Network architects should therefore distinguish between route-level diversity and end-to-end diversity. A circuit can traverse an independent inter-city corridor but still share a metropolitan duct, building entrance, power feed or cross-connect with another service. Those details have not yet been released for SM-1.
Quick Recap
What SM-1 is—and is not
- It is: a planned 850-kilometre terrestrial fibre network between Sydney and Melbourne, with at least 96 fibre pairs and a June 2028 Ready for Service target.
