Stylophone Mini Original vs. Stylophone S-1: Which Pocket Synthesizer Should You Choose?

Choose the Stylophone Mini Original if maximum portability, an attached stylus, a built-in speaker and included batteries matter most. Choose the Stylophone S-1 if you need a clearly specified three-octave range, volume control, and documented 3.5 mm audio connections. The S-1 costs more and is physically larger, but it is the more flexible instrument for connecting to other audio gear.

There is an important naming trap: the manufacturer calls its larger original pocket synthesizer the Stylophone S-1, while “Mini Original” is also the name of a Mini color variant. This comparison uses “S-1” for the larger model throughout, so you can identify the right product when shopping.

Mini Original and S-1: the key differences

Both instruments are stylus-played pocket synthesizers with built-in speakers. The Mini Original is designed around extreme portability: the manufacturer describes it as a playable keychain instrument, and its stated dimensions are just 10.4 × 7.9 × 2.3 cm. The S-1 measures 18 × 12 × 4.5 cm, so it occupies substantially more space in a pocket or bag.

The larger S-1 has the more completely documented performance feature set. Its product page specifies three octaves, a three-way octave control, volume control, vibrato, a built-in speaker, 3.5 mm stereo line-in and line-out, and an optional headphone jack. The Mini page lists power and vibrato controls but does not state an octave count or list an external audio connection.

Which one is smaller and easier to carry?

Mini Original: keychain-sized portability

The Mini Original is the clear choice when size is the deciding factor. At 10.4 cm long, 7.9 cm wide and 2.3 cm high, it is small enough to be treated as a novelty instrument, travel companion or always-with-you gadget. The manufacturer explicitly positions it as a playable keychain instrument. Its attached stylus means there is no separate pen to remember, and the box includes a tin for the Mini, stylus and storage.

The Mini’s compact design also reduces the number of pieces you need to carry. The stylus is attached, the speaker is built in, and two LR44 batteries are included. That makes it ready to use out of the box, subject to the batteries retaining their charge during storage.

S-1: still portable, but not keychain-sized

The S-1 is portable in the broad sense, but its 18 cm width, 12 cm height and 4.5 cm depth make it a small instrument rather than a keychain accessory. It needs room in a backpack, laptop bag or larger coat pocket. In exchange, the larger body accommodates three octaves, dedicated volume control and additional audio sockets.

If you want something that can disappear into a pocket with minimal thought, pick the Mini. If you are willing to carry a larger device to gain range and connectivity, the S-1 is the better fit.

  • ENRICH YOUR SOUND - Give your sounds incredible weight and retro character. • ENHANCED PLAYABILITY - Go beyond static notes and add real human feeling to your music. The iconic stylus-powered keyboard is now paired with a multi-function, finger-sensitive expression strip. Effortlessly bend the pitch, modulate the LFO, or perform dramatic filter sweeps for a truly dynamic and lively performance.

How much playing range and control do you get?

Mini Original: a compact control set

The Mini product page lists power and vibrato controls. It does not provide an octave count, so you should not assume that it covers the same range as the S-1. The nickel-plated keyboard and attached stylus provide the instrument’s playing surface, while the built-in speaker supplies sound without an amplifier.

Because the manufacturer does not state the Mini’s number of octaves on the cited page, its suitability for melodies that require a wide range cannot be confirmed from the published specification. Treat it as a compact, limited-format instrument unless the seller supplies a more detailed manual for the exact version you are buying.

S-1: three octaves and a dedicated octave selector

The S-1 specification explicitly states a three-octave range. It also lists a three-way octave control, allowing you to move among octave settings without relying on an unstated or inferred range. A volume control is included alongside power and vibrato.

That combination matters for anyone practicing recognizable melodies, moving between low and high phrases, or playing through external equipment. The volume knob is also useful when the built-in speaker is too loud or too quiet for the room, although no independent loudness measurements are established for either model.

Does either model have a headphone jack or audio input?

S-1 connections

The S-1 is the model to choose for documented connections to other audio hardware. Its manufacturer page lists a 3.5 mm stereo line-in and a 3.5 mm stereo line-out, plus an optional headphone jack. The line-in and line-out give the S-1 a role beyond self-contained practice: you can plan a setup involving another source or output device, provided your cables and the exact jack configuration match the current unit.

Stylophone Pink - The Original Pocket Electronic Synthesizer - Special Edition | Synth Musical Instrument | Synthesizer Keyboard | Stylophone Instrument
  • Miniature stylus operated synthesizer is a recreation of the 1967 classic.
  • 3 Octaves. Optional vibrato effect.
  • Tuning knob on bottom allows you tune the Stylophone or do pitch-bend effects.
  • Built in speaker with volume control, Optional headphone jack.
  • Line Out (3.5mm).

The phrase “optional headphone jack” should be read literally. The manufacturer lists headphone support as optional rather than presenting it as an unconditional built-in feature on every package. Check the specification for the particular edition or accessory bundle before buying if private listening is essential.

Mini Original connections

The cited Mini product page lists no external audio connection. It does have a built-in speaker, so it can be played without additional equipment, but the published specification does not confirm a line input, line output or headphone socket.

For silent practice, recording into another device or routing the instrument through a larger sound system, the S-1 is the only model of the two with manufacturer-documented 3.5 mm connections. Do not buy the Mini expecting those sockets unless the exact seller listing explicitly documents them.

What batteries do they use, and are batteries included?

Mini Original battery setup

The Mini Original uses two LR44 button cells, and the manufacturer lists those batteries as included. That is the more convenient arrangement for an impulse purchase or gift because the package is intended to be usable without a separate battery run.

S-1 battery setup

The S-1 has three AA battery slots, but AA batteries are not included. Plan to have three compatible cells available before your first session. The larger battery format is easier to source than LR44 cells, but the S-1 will not be ready immediately if you do not already have batteries at home.

Neither cited product page establishes battery life, rechargeability, or long-term storage performance. Do not use the battery count as a promise of runtime.

What is included in each box?

Mini Original contents

The Mini listing names the Mini unit, its attached stylus and a tin. It also states that two LR44 batteries are included. The page references a “Stylophone Mini Song Book” in its documentation area, but the physical format and retail availability of that item are not established here; confirm its status separately if it is important to you.

S-1 contents

The S-1 page states that a stylus is included. It does not identify a tin or included batteries in the cited specification, and the battery section explicitly says that three AAs are not included. Verify the retailer’s package contents if you are buying a bundle or special edition rather than the standard product.

How do the prices compare?

The manufacturer’s displayed prices in a 2026 search result were £19.95 for the Stylophone Mini and £29.95 for the Stylophone S-1. That is a £10 difference at the displayed prices, with the S-1 costing 50% more than the Mini on that comparison.

Which model suits different buyers?

Choose the Mini Original when these priorities match

  • You want the smallest possible instrument and like the manufacturer’s keychain positioning.
  • You need a built-in speaker and attached stylus with no extra accessories to pack.
  • You value batteries being included.
  • You are comfortable with the Mini page not specifying an octave count or external audio sockets.
  • You want the lower displayed manufacturer price, subject to current availability and regional costs.

Choose the S-1 when these priorities match

  • You need a documented three-octave range.
  • You want a volume control and three-way octave control.
  • You plan to connect line-level audio through 3.5 mm stereo input or output.
  • You need the model for which an optional headphone jack is documented.
  • You can carry a larger body and purchase three AA batteries separately.

Choose based on use case

Playing through or into other audio gear S-1 3.5 mm stereo line-in and line-out are listed
Ready-to-play gift Mini Original Two LR44 batteries are listed as included
Private listening S-1, subject to the exact version An optional headphone jack is listed; verify the package
Lowest displayed manufacturer price Mini Original £19.95 versus £29.95 in the cited 2026 search result

What “Original” means in the product names

“Original” can refer to two different things in the manufacturer’s current naming. The larger original pocket synthesizer is identified as the Stylophone S-1. Separately, “Mini Original” is the name of a Mini color variant. A listing that says only “Stylophone Original” may therefore be ambiguous.

Before purchasing, check the dimensions and feature list rather than relying on the word “Original.” A listing for the S-1 should align with the 18 × 12 × 4.5 cm body, three-octave range, volume control and 3.5 mm connections. A Mini Original listing should align with the 10.4 × 7.9 × 2.3 cm body, attached stylus, built-in speaker and LR44 batteries.

What is known about the Stylophone’s history?

The manufacturer’s homepage says the Stylophone was inspired by the original first introduced in 1968. The same page displays “Making Music for 58 Years” and the promotional phrase “Millions Sold.” Those are manufacturer statements: the page does not provide an independently sourced, dated sales figure or an original statistical record for the “Millions Sold” claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manufacturer describes the product in this wording: “The Stylophone is a small electronic synthesizer that makes creating music simple and fun.” It also calls the Mini “more than just a collectible keychain.” Those descriptions explain the brand’s positioning, but they are not independent tests of sound quality, playability or durability.

What the published specifications do not tell you

Official feature lists answer the practical buying questions above, but they do not establish everything a musician might want to know. The available product information does not provide independent listening comparisons, measured loudness, long-term battery-life figures, durability testing or a tested assessment of which model is easier to play.

  • No independent evidence establishes that one model sounds better than the other.
  • No measured speaker output or headphone level is provided.
  • No long-term reliability or drop-resistance result is documented.
  • No battery-runtime test is supplied for either battery type.
  • No age suitability should be inferred solely from the small size or keychain description.

That means the recommendation should stay tied to documented design differences: the Mini for size and included batteries, the S-1 for range, volume control and connections. Claims about sound preference, toughness or practice comfort require hands-on testing that is not established here.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify the model by dimensions. Confirm whether the listing describes the Mini’s 10.4 × 7.9 × 2.3 cm body or the S-1’s 18 × 12 × 4.5 cm body.
  2. Check the range you need. Select the S-1 if three octaves and a three-way octave control are important. Do not assume the Mini has the same range because its page does not state an octave count.
  3. Inspect the connection list. Look for the S-1’s 3.5 mm stereo line-in and line-out. Treat headphone support as optional and verify the exact version.
  4. Confirm the battery package. The Mini should list two LR44 cells included; the S-1 requires three AAs that you supply.
  5. Check the exact package and color. “Mini Original” can describe a Mini color variant, while “S-1” identifies the larger model.
  6. Verify the current total. Recheck price, currency, tax, shipping and stock because the cited £19.95 and £29.95 figures are time-sensitive 2026 manufacturer displays.

Verdict: which pocket synthesizer should you choose?

For a genuinely pocket-sized, self-contained novelty instrument, choose the Stylophone Mini Original. It is the smaller model, includes its stylus and two LR44 batteries, and has a built-in speaker. Its trade-offs are an unspecified octave count and no external audio connection listed on the cited page.

For a more capable pocket synthesizer that you can play across a documented three-octave range, adjust with a volume control and connect through 3.5 mm audio sockets, choose the Stylophone S-1. It is larger, costs more at the cited manufacturer prices, and requires three AA batteries that are not included, but its controls and connectivity make it the stronger choice for melody practice and integration with other equipment.
