Student Protests in Chile Turn to Clashes With Police in Santiago

Students in Santiago protested education cuts and the Chilean government’s austerity agenda on June 3, 2026. The march began peacefully, but clashes later broke out: police used water cannons and tear gas, while some demonstrators threw rocks and other objects. Associated Press journalists observed at least a dozen arrests and several injuries; those were observations at the scene, not final official totals.

Why students protested

The Confederation of Chilean Students (CONFECH) organized the march, with support from the Teachers’ Union, secondary-school student associations and feminist groups. Protesters opposed education spending cuts and broader austerity measures, arguing that they threatened access to education and student representation. They also rallied against the National Reconstruction bill, a broad government package intended to reduce state spending, encourage investment and boost the economy, according to the Associated Press.

AP reported that President José Antonio Kast had pledged roughly $6 billion in public-spending cuts over 18 months and that his government was imposing a nearly 3% budget cut across ministries. These are policy figures reported by AP, not measures of the march or its consequences. AP said the bill had passed the Chamber of Deputies in late May and was set for Senate debate as of its June 3 report; that account does not establish the bill’s later status.

Student Magdalena Correa, 21, told AP: “They want to silence us, but we are not going to stop.” She also said: “They’re taking away our resources and rights, and we have to fight back.”

How the march escalated

The demonstration began peacefully before clashes developed between protesters and police. AP reported that police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds, while some demonstrators threw rocks and other objects. Several streets were blocked and multiple subway stations closed. AP journalists observed at least a dozen arrests and several injuries.

The figures above describe what AP journalists observed, not a confirmed final count. At the time of its report, AP said police and government officials had not commented on the clashes. Mario Aguilar, president of the Chilean Teachers’ Union, alleged to AP: “The government sought to provoke this, to create this situation to justify repression.” That is Aguilar’s claim; the available account does not establish what caused the escalation.

What official scrutiny followed

On June 8, Chile’s Chamber of Deputies published an oversight request asking the Public Security minister for details about police procedure during the CONFECH mobilization. It sought information about arrests and injuries, possible effects on journalists and human-rights observers, the crowd-control methods used, and measures to protect participants’ rights. The Chamber page showed no response registered when accessed. That page status does not establish whether a response was filed later.
