It may amuse viewers who want a loud, knowingly campy 1990s throwback, but anyone seeking a coherent martial-arts story should lower expectations or skip it.
What the 2026 Street Fighter movie is
Paramount’s theatrical adaptation opens Friday, directed and co-written by Kitao Sakurai with T.J. Fixman. It turns Capcom’s roster into a crowded World Warrior Tournament story rather than a tightly focused hero’s journey.

An anime-style flashback set in 1987 shows the death of Ken and Ryu’s master and the two students’ subsequent break. The film then jumps to 1993, where Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Blanka, Guile, Balrog, M. Bison, Akuma, Vega and numerous additional fighters converge on the tournament. Bison, presented as a fascist dictator, wants to amplify his power with Ryu’s.

The casting is part of the joke: professional wrestlers and the masked musician Orville Peck are effectively cosplaying famous game fighters. The recognizable outfits and personalities will register immediately with longtime players, even when the story gives them little to do.

Why the movie feels so overstuffed
No stable protagonist
The screenplay repeatedly loses track of who should carry the film. Ryu and Ken’s history suggests a central emotional arc, while Chun-Li, Guile, Bison and the other tournament entrants compete for attention. Scenes introduce one fighter, pivot to another and then abandon the first thread, making the ensemble feel like a parade instead of a narrative.
More side drama than tournament
Sakurai stages many scenes with the rhythm of fights, but the script spends surprisingly little time building the tournament itself. Testosterone-heavy arguments and personal detours crowd out the rivalries and match progression that should provide the movie’s spine.

Clipped final act
The final stretch has clipped dialogue, confused pacing and evidence of considerable post-production cutting and pasting. It reaches optimistic sequel bait without delivering a real finale. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle calls the plotting “weirdly convoluted and jumbled” and ends his review with the exhausted instruction, “Guys, stop fighting.”
Is it funny-bad or simply bad?
The movie is aiming for a goofy good time, but its camp is inconsistent. Songs such as “Who Let the Dogs Out?” and “2 Legit 2 Quit” supply broad 1990s nostalgia, and the costumes invite the audience to treat every entrance as a punch line. Yet the film does not always control whether a moment is deliberately ridiculous or merely underwritten.

Callina Liang is the most kinetic performer, giving Chun-Li urgency whenever the edit lets her stay in a scene. David Dastmalchian tries to inject comic energy into Bison. The celebrity casting, including the meta joke of Peck as Vega, can raise a laugh even when the surrounding sequence collapses. Viewers who enjoy loud ensemble spectacle may find that energy entertaining; viewers waiting for jokes to land or characters to develop may experience only noise.
How it compares with the 1994 film
Coyle says the new movie feels perilously on par with the 1994 adaptation. That earlier film, led by Jean-Claude Van Damme, centers on Gen. Bison’s kidnapping of relief workers and Col. Guile’s international rescue force. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the 1994 movie at 20% on the Tomatometer from 90 reviews and a 20% audience score; its listed runtime is 1 hour 42 minutes.

The practical difference is not that the remake makes the material serious; it is that it makes the roster larger while leaving the dramatic priorities less clear. If the 1994 movie is your baseline, the new version may feel less like a correction than a similarly chaotic remix.
Age rating and content warnings
The film is rated PG-13 for violence and action, bloody images, strong language, sexual references, partial nudity and brief smoking. That rating suits the movie’s tone: it is not an adults-only production, but its fights and language are more intense than a purely family-oriented game cartoon.

Who should watch it?
- Watch in theaters if you enjoy knowingly silly game adaptations, flamboyant costumes, celebrity cameos and the communal fun of a chaotic ensemble.
- Approach cautiously if you mainly want martial-arts choreography; the fights have bursts of energy, but editing and story interruptions dilute them.
- Skip it if a clear protagonist, logical tournament progression and a conclusive ending are essential. The film does not reliably provide any of the three.
Bottom line
Street Fighter has the ingredients of a delirious midnight-movie success—famous fighters, huge personalities, retro songs and colorful action—but not the discipline to assemble them. Its best moments come from Liang’s physicality, Dastmalchian’s comic commitment and the sheer absurdity of the casting. Its one-star verdict reflects everything around those moments: a jumbled script, uncertain character priorities, chopped-up pacing and an ending that asks for a sequel before finishing this story.
