Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Guile and Raul Juliá plays Bison. Ming-Na Wen, Damian Chapa, Kylie Minogue, Simon Callow, Byron Mann, Roshan Seth and Wes Studi fill out the supporting cast. Because Guile commands the rescue operation, the film’s emotional and tactical center is the military unit. Other fighters enter the mission as allies, informants or comic relief rather than as equal tournament contenders.
What the adaptation gains

Paramount’s official synopsis sets the story in 1993. Estranged Ryu and Ken Masters are drawn back into combat when Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. Paramount credits Kitao Sakurai as director and lists Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and Callina Liang in the central roles.
The premise immediately signals a different relationship with the games. A tournament supplies a reason for multiple fighters to meet, compete and form temporary alliances. Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li are not supporting pieces in someone else’s military mission or a single-character flashback; they are the organizing trio for a larger fighter event.
Production relationship
Capcom announced in 2023 that it was developing new live-action Street Fighter film and television projects with Legendary Entertainment. On September 5, 2025, Capcom announced that filming had commenced and that the main Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li casting had been finalized. Those announcements establish the production relationship and timeline; they do not establish a continuity link to the 1994 or 2009 films.

How to read the early reviews
An Associated Press review published after the 2026 release called the movie “a campy ’90s nostalgia ride and a complete mess.” That is one reviewer’s characterization, not a universal verdict or a final review aggregate. Because 2026 scores were still volatile in October 2026, it is more accurate to describe the critical response as mixed than to assign a definitive ranking against the older movies.

Box-office totals and review percentages answer different questions. Choose the 2009 film for a Chun-Li-only experiment
Watch the 2009 movie if your main interest is seeing Chun-Li carry an origin story. It is a distinct adaptation, not required homework for either other film.
