The most useful order is therefore a practical release-and-continuity route, not a fictional calendar. The shortest answer: what to play and watch first
| Goal | Start here | Next step | Movie choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Understand the series’ roots | Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection | Street Fighter 6 | Watch the 2026 film after playing, or independently |
| Play one game with the gentlest modern onboarding | Street Fighter 6 | Return to the collection if you want historical context | The 1994 film is optional nostalgia |
| Sample the arcade lineage efficiently | The collection’s original Street Fighter, then Street Fighter II and its major revisions | Later games in the collection, at your own pace | Films remain separate adaptations |
| Prepare specifically for the 2026 movie | No game is mandatory | Play either the collection or Street Fighter 6 for character familiarity | See the new film on or after October 16, 2026 |
This route keeps the games as the core series and treats both live-action productions as adaptations. It also avoids forcing a complete fictional-year sequence that Capcom has not published in one authoritative list.

How the Street Fighter game timeline is established
For a dependable order, use documented release history and the continuity relationship between the mainline games. Capcom identifies the first Street Fighter as a 1987 arcade release. It followed with Street Fighter II in 1991, the entry that turned the series into a global hit through its innovative battle system. Those two dates are the firm starting points for any timeline.

1987 — Street Fighter
The original arcade Street Fighter is the historical starting line. Playing it first shows the basic one-on-one format before the series’ large-scale expansion. Its importance is mainly foundational: it establishes where the franchise began rather than serving as the easiest modern introduction for a new player.
1991 — Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II is the breakout chapter. It is the point at which the series’ character-driven tournament format and battle-system identity became widely recognized. If you are sampling history, reach this game early rather than spending your first session trying to complete every title in publication order.
The 30th Anniversary Collection — the arcade-era survey
Capcom Support describes Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection as a package of 12 games, all originally released as arcade titles. That makes it the most efficient physical way to survey the early series in one purchase. Start with the original Street Fighter, continue to Street Fighter II, and then explore the major revisions and later-era entries included in the package.
The collection is best understood as a historical sampler, not as a single new chapter with one continuous story. You can use it in release order, dip into the versions that interest you, or stop once you have enough context to move to Street Fighter 6. Exact platform availability, regional editions and current stock can vary, so check the edition sold in your territory before buying.

2023 — Street Fighter 6
Capcom calls Street Fighter 6 the newest title in the series and the sequel to Street Fighter V. It launched on June 2, 2023 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC. For someone who wants a current mainline game rather than an archive, this is the natural destination after the arcade overview—or the correct first stop if you prefer modern presentation and systems.
Its World Tour mode is built around an avatar’s journey, giving a new player a guided way to encounter the setting and characters. Battle Hub provides online social play. Those modes make Street Fighter 6 more approachable as a standalone starting point than an older arcade release, even though the earlier games explain how the series evolved.
2025 — Nintendo Switch 2 edition
Capcom’s 2025 announcement lists a Nintendo Switch 2 release for Street Fighter 6 on June 5, 2025. Treat this as a platform edition of the modern game, not a new chronological chapter. The game’s place in the route remains the same whether you play the original 2023 release on a listed platform or the later Switch 2 edition.

1. The recommended first-timer route
- Play the original Street Fighter in the 30th Anniversary Collection. Spend enough time to recognize the starting format; you do not need to master it.
- Move to Street Fighter II. This is the historical turning point and the best single game in the collection for understanding why the franchise became a phenomenon.
- Sample the collection’s major revisions and later arcade entries. Choose a few rather than treating all 12 games as homework.
- Start Street Fighter 6. Use World Tour to learn the modern environment and Battle Hub when you want online social play.
- Watch the 2026 film separately. It is an adaptation, not the next playable installment.
This sequence gives you context without delaying the modern game for an exhaustive archive playthrough.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. The history-first route
- Play every game in the 30th Anniversary Collection in its presented release-era order.
- Take notes on which characters, mechanics and revisions feel like meaningful changes to you; the collection’s value is comparison across arcade generations.
- Finish with Street Fighter 6 as the current mainline reference point.
- Keep both movies outside the game sequence and watch them as separate interpretations.
This is the route for players who enjoy seeing design changes over time more than reaching the newest game quickly.
3. The modern-only route
- Install Street Fighter 6 on a supported platform.
- Begin in World Tour to learn the controls and meet the game’s cast through its avatar journey.
- Use Battle Hub for online social play once you are comfortable with the basics.
- Return to the 30th Anniversary Collection later if you want to see the 1987 and 1991 origins.
You lose some historical context, but you do not miss a required story chapter for the 2026 film.
Where the movies fit
Street Fighter (1994)
The 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme adaptation belongs to film history, not the required game order. The Associated Press distinguishes it from the new production. Watch it if you are interested in 1990s video-game adaptations, Van Damme, or camp nostalgia; skip it if your goal is to understand the current games or prepare for the 2026 release.

Street Fighter (2026)
Capcom announced that filming began with Legendary Entertainment and identified Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li among the principal cast. The announced release date is October 16, 2026. Paramount’s current film listing gives the same date and provides ticket information.
The 2026 production should be approached as a new live-action adaptation of the fighting-game series. Its characters and premise draw on the game property, but it is not presented as a playable entry that must be placed between Street Fighter V and Street Fighter 6. You can watch it without having completed any game, although playing the collection or Street Fighter 6 first will make familiar names and rivalries easier to recognize.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the 2026 movie connected to the games?
It is connected at the property level: it adapts Street Fighter and features recognizable game characters including Ken, Ryu and Chun-Li. That does not make it a chapter in the games’ release sequence. The safest way to describe the relationship is shared source material, separate adaptation continuity.

Consequently, do not delay the film while trying to complete all 12 arcade titles, and do not assume the movie will resolve or continue a particular game’s ending. The games provide the core interactive timeline; the films offer their own retellings.

| Street Fighter | 1987 | Original arcade release | See the franchise’s starting point |
| Street Fighter II | 1991 | Original arcade release | Experience the breakout entry |
| Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection | Collection described by Capcom Support in 2026 | 12 arcade-origin games; current platform and stock depend on edition and region | Survey the early series efficiently |

| Street Fighter live-action film | October 16, 2026 | Theatrical release information listed by Paramount | Watch a new adaptation |
The dates above are release or announcement dates, not fictional years inside the story. That distinction matters because no complete official calendar for every game event is established in the documented material.
Choosing your route by what you want
- You want historical context: choose the 30th Anniversary Collection, beginning with Street Fighter and Street Fighter II.
- You want the easiest modern entry: choose Street Fighter 6 and begin with World Tour.
- You want online social play: choose Street Fighter 6 and use Battle Hub.
- You want to watch the new movie: no game is mandatory; play either the collection or Street Fighter 6 only for added familiarity.
- You are curious about adaptation history: watch the 1994 film as an optional standalone curiosity, then treat the 2026 film as a separate production.
Common timeline mistakes
Treating every game as a dated story chapter
Release years are documented for the opening games and Street Fighter 6, but a strict fictional-year chronology for every installment is not. Calling the practical order a release-and-continuity route avoids inventing dates that have not been established.
Assuming the collection must be completed before Street Fighter 6
The 12-game package is a survey tool. Its purpose is to show the arcade lineage; it is not a prerequisite course. Once you understand the original and Street Fighter II, moving to Street Fighter 6 is a valid and efficient choice.
Using the 1994 film as required homework
The older adaptation is not a mandatory bridge to the new movie. Its value is historical or nostalgic, so decide based on your interest in that era of film rather than on fears of missing game continuity.
Buying the wrong platform edition
Street Fighter 6 has documented releases across PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch 2, with the Switch 2 edition dated later than the original launch. Confirm your hardware, territory and edition before purchasing; the collection’s availability likewise depends on the specific release you find.
Final route
For most readers, play Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection far enough to experience the 1987 original and 1991 Street Fighter II, then make Street Fighter 6 your modern mainline game. Watch the 2026 live-action film on or after October 16, 2026 as a separate adaptation. Add the 1994 movie only if you want a piece of adaptation history—not because the games require it.
