It is the only live-action adaptation in this group built around her story, and Capcom’s 2008 announcement explicitly said, “The story revolves around fan-favorite Chun-Li, who will be portrayed by actress Kristen Kreuk.” If you want the most recognizable 1990s cast and broad tournament-style camp, watch the 1994 Street Fighter. If you want the newest reboot and a large contemporary ensemble, try the 2026 Street Fighter, while going in with modest expectations: the Associated Press review called it a chaotic, nostalgia-heavy misfire.
The short answer for Chun-Li fans
These three films serve different purposes rather than offering three versions of the same Chun-Li story.

| Film | What Chun-Li means to the story | Best reason to watch | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) | Central protagonist | A Chun-Li-focused origin narrative | Very poor cited critical reception and weak commercial performance |
| Street Fighter (1994) | One fighter in a large ensemble | Jean-Claude Van Damme, 1990s action-comedy camp and a wide roster | Guile, not Chun-Li, is the dramatic center |
| Street Fighter (2026) | Important recruiter in an ensemble reboot | A current cast and a new tournament-era take on the property | The Associated Press review describes it as convoluted and unsuccessful |
The practical order is simple: start with the 2009 film if your priority is Chun-Li herself, then use the 1994 movie for camp and nostalgia. Add the 2026 reboot if you want to see how a new cast approaches the same game mythology.

How much of each movie is actually about Chun-Li?
2009: the only Chun-Li-led live-action film
Capcom positioned The Legend of Chun-Li as a character film during the franchise’s 20th-anniversary period. Its central promise is unambiguous: Chun-Li is the protagonist, and the narrative is designed around her rather than around a military commander, a tournament host or a rotating group of fighters. Kristin Kreuk plays Chun-Li, while the film is directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That focus makes the 2009 production the clearest match for a reader asking, “Does the Chun-Li movie actually follow her origin?” It is an origin-focused adaptation, not merely a film in which she receives a prominent supporting scene. The story narrows the franchise’s attention to Chun-Li, Bison and Gen, giving her conflict with the villains more space than the ensemble films can provide.
“Most directly about Chun-Li” does not mean “best made.” The focus is the reason to select this film, not evidence that its screenplay, performances or action automatically succeed.
1994: Chun-Li inside Guile’s ensemble
The 1994 Street Fighter is the broad legacy adaptation associated with Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Guile. Capcom’s annual-report description identifies it as the earlier Hollywood live-action version, and its commercial identity rests on a large group of recognizable fighters rather than a solo Chun-Li journey.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Chun-Li is present, but the film’s dramatic architecture is Guile-led. That distinction matters if you are expecting the 2009 film’s premise. The 1994 movie gives you a bigger roster and a more overtly communal action-adventure, while Chun-Li functions as one member of the team. Watch it as an ensemble relic, not as the franchise’s definitive account of her background.
2026: a new ensemble with Chun-Li in a major role
The 2026 reboot returns to a multi-fighter structure. The Associated Press identifies Callina Liang as Chun-Li, alongside Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Cody Rhodes as Guile and 50 Cent as Balrog. AP’s description gives Chun-Li a significant recruiting role, but the movie remains a shared-cast tournament story rather than a solo character study.
That makes the 2026 film a middle ground in premise: Chun-Li matters more than she does in the 1994 ensemble, yet the movie is not built exclusively around her as the 2009 film is. AP’s October 15, 2026 review characterizes the result as a “campy ‘90s nostalgia ride” and a “complete mess,” and says it feels perilously close to the 1994 film. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, so treat them as a reception signal rather than a measurable performance statistic.

Chun-Li centrality, tone and roster: a direct comparison
| Comparison point | 1994 Street Fighter | The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) | 2026 Street Fighter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story center | Guile and a broad fighter ensemble | Chun-Li’s origin-focused story | Ensemble reboot with Chun-Li in a major recruiting role |
| Chun-Li’s function | One member of the team | Lead protagonist | Major participant, not the sole lead |
| Tone | Broad, campy 1990s action | Darker origin-story approach | Kitschy, convoluted nostalgia according to AP |
| Roster emphasis | Many recognizable fighters | Narrower focus on Chun-Li, Bison and Gen | Large contemporary cast including Ryu, Ken, Guile, Blanka and Balrog |
| Best fit | Viewers seeking star-led ensemble camp | Viewers seeking Chun-Li narrative centrality | Viewers curious about a current reboot and its cast |
The table explains why arguments about the “best” adaptation often talk past one another. A viewer judging narrative relevance will put 2009 first. A viewer judging group chemistry, familiar names and 1990s excess may prefer 1994. Someone interested in a new cast may select 2026 despite the negative review.

Is the 2009 Chun-Li movie better than the Van Damme film?
It is better for Chun-Li specificity, but the available reception evidence does not support calling it the better overall movie.
The 2009 production wins the direct comparison on protagonist: Chun-Li is the stated center, whereas Van Damme’s 1994 film is organized around Guile and an ensemble. It also offers the more concentrated matchup of Chun-Li, Bison and Gen. If your definition of “better” is “gives Chun-Li the most narrative attention,” the answer is clearly 2009.
For execution and audience reputation, the evidence is less favorable. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critic excerpts criticize the 2009 film’s shallow plot, miscasting, visual effects and fight choreography. Those excerpts do not establish that every viewer will dislike it, but they do explain why the film is usually recommended for its premise and character focus rather than for polished filmmaking.
The 1994 film has its own tonal liabilities, yet its appeal is easier to identify: a recognizable action star, a large roster and deliberately broad 1990s energy. If you enjoy camp, its flaws can become part of the experience. If you want a serious, faithful Chun-Li character study, it is the wrong starting point.
What the box office says about the two legacy films
| Film | Budget | Worldwide gross | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter (1994) | $35 million | $99.423 million | The larger commercial result of the two films cited here |
| Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) | $50 million | $12.660 million | A much weaker return despite the larger stated budget |
The Numbers reports these figures, accessed in 2026. They are production and worldwide-gross figures, not profitability calculations: marketing expenses, distribution terms and studio accounting are not supplied here. They do show a sharp commercial contrast. The 1994 ensemble reached a substantially larger worldwide audience, while the 2009 Chun-Li-centered film underperformed against its stated production budget.

No box-office figure is established here for the 2026 reboot, so it should not be ranked commercially alongside the two earlier films.
How the tone changes from film to film
1994: broad action-comedy camp
The Van Damme film is best approached as a time capsule of 1990s studio action. Its broadness is structural: the movie has to accommodate Guile and many game characters, so it favors a shared adventure over a single fighter’s interior arc. That is why it works better for viewers who want group spectacle, star power and an intentionally outsized tone.
2009: darker origin framing
The 2009 film tries to move in the opposite direction. By concentrating on Chun-Li’s beginnings and her conflict with Bison and Gen, it aims for a darker, more personal interpretation. This approach is useful for fans who want the adaptation to answer “who is Chun-Li and how did she become this fighter?” rather than “which game characters can appear in the same event?”
The critical excerpts indicate that the darker intention did not produce universally convincing drama. Keep the distinction clear: the film’s concept is Chun-Li-centered and origin-focused; the cited reviews question how effectively that concept is executed.
2026: nostalgia-forward reboot energy
AP frames the newest film as a campy throwback to the 1990s. Its cast signals the same priority: multiple recognizable fighters share the screen, and the movie uses the tournament and roster mythology as its main attraction. Chun-Li’s recruiting function gives her importance, but it does not convert the reboot into a character-origin movie.
For fans deciding whether to watch, the key expectation is tonal rather than chronological. The 2026 film is not presented as a sober correction of the earlier adaptations; AP’s review says it leans into nostalgia and ends up chaotic and convoluted.

Which movie should you watch first?
Choose 2009 first when Chun-Li is your priority
- Start with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
- Use it to see the franchise’s only live-action film whose announced premise explicitly revolves around her.
- Judge it primarily as a character-focused origin attempt, while allowing for the negative critical response to its plot, casting, effects and choreography.
This is the correct first stop for someone who wants Chun-Li’s journey rather than a general Street Fighter sampler.
Choose 1994 first when you want the classic ensemble
- Start with Street Fighter (1994).
- Expect Guile and the larger cast to receive the central dramatic weight.
- Approach it as broad 1990s action-comedy and nostalgia, not as Chun-Li’s definitive origin.
This order makes sense for viewers whose interest began with Jean-Claude Van Damme, the legacy cast or the spectacle of many fighters appearing together.
Choose 2026 first when the new cast is the attraction
- Start with the 2026 Street Fighter if Callina Liang’s Chun-Li, Andrew Koji’s Ryu or the new ensemble is what brought you to the series.
- Expect an ensemble reboot in which Chun-Li helps bring the fighters together rather than carrying every scene.
- Keep AP’s unfavorable October 15, 2026 assessment in mind, especially its description of the film as a chaotic, nostalgia-heavy throwback.
This route is for curiosity about the current adaptation, not for the most concentrated Chun-Li narrative.
A viewing order for different kinds of fans
| Your priority | Recommended order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chun-Li’s story | 2009 → 1994 → 2026 | Begin with the only Chun-Li-led film, then compare how the ensemble versions use her |
| 1990s camp and nostalgia | 1994 → 2009 → 2026 | Start with the legacy tone, then see the darker origin experiment and the newer throwback |
| New cast first | 2026 → 2009 → 1994 | Begin with the current reboot, then move backward to the focused and legacy interpretations |
| Complete comparison | 1994 → 2009 → 2026 | Moves from the original ensemble, to the character spin-off, to the latest ensemble reboot |
There is no continuity requirement that forces one order. The films are most useful as contrasting adaptations: Guile-led ensemble, Chun-Li-led origin, then a new ensemble reboot.

1994’s strength: scale and recognizable company
- It places Chun-Li among a large group of fighters, which can be satisfying if you enjoy seeing the game’s world treated as a shared universe.
- Its Guile-led structure gives the film a clear action-star anchor.
- Its broad 1990s tone makes it a natural choice for camp viewing with friends.
None of those strengths changes the fact that Chun-Li is not the lead. They describe the experience the film actually offers.

- Chun-Li is the protagonist rather than a supporting fighter.
- The film attempts an origin story, making it the best match for viewers who want her personal path foregrounded.
- The narrower focus on Chun-Li, Bison and Gen avoids the roster sprawl of the ensemble films.
The trade-off is that critics cited by Rotten Tomatoes found the plot shallow and the action and effects weak. Select it because of its focus, not because the available evidence promises superior craft.

2026’s strength: a current roster interpretation
- Callina Liang gives the newest film a new live-action Chun-Li for viewers who want a contemporary casting choice.
- The reboot connects her to Ryu, Ken, Guile, Blanka and Balrog in a large shared cast.
- Its recruiting setup gives Chun-Li a meaningful role in assembling the film’s fighters.
The limitation is the same feature that creates its scale: it is an ensemble. AP’s review also warns that the nostalgia-first approach becomes convoluted.
Common mistakes when choosing a Street Fighter adaptation
Assuming the title tells you who leads
The two films titled Street Fighter are not interchangeable. The 1994 version centers on Guile, while the 2026 version is a new ensemble reboot. Only the 2009 title signals Chun-Li directly, and Capcom’s announcement confirms that this is a story built around her.
Confusing character centrality with quality
A film can be the most relevant to Chun-Li fans and still be poorly reviewed. That is exactly the useful distinction here: 2009 is the strongest match for the character request, while the cited criticism is harsh. Choose based on the experience you want, then calibrate expectations about execution.
Using box office as a verdict on fan value
The 1994 film’s larger worldwide gross does not make it a Chun-Li story, and the 2009 film’s weak gross does not erase its unique premise. Commercial reach measures market performance, not how much screen time or narrative agency Chun-Li receives.
Expecting the 2026 review to be a performance measurement
AP’s “complete mess” characterization is an individual review assessment. It is useful when setting expectations, but it is not a box-office result, audience score or technical measurement. Treat it as a warning about tone and coherence.
Availability and edition notes
Physical editions and current retail stock vary by country and can change over time. Search using the exact title—Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li for the 2009 film and Street Fighter with the year for the two ensemble versions—then verify the region, runtime, format and seller before buying.
The BBFC lists the 2009 film at 92 minutes. That runtime applies to the listed BBFC edition; other releases can differ in extras, certification presentation or regional packaging. The available information does not establish a single current price or a universally stocked edition for any of the three movies.

| If you are this viewer… | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| “I want Chun-Li’s origin and the most time with her.” | The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) | It is explicitly Chun-Li-centered and origin-focused. |
| “I want Van Damme and a 1990s ensemble.” | Street Fighter (1994) | Guile leads a broad, campy action cast. |
| “I want the latest cast and a reboot.” | Street Fighter (2026) | It introduces a new ensemble with Callina Liang as Chun-Li. |
| “I want to compare all the adaptations.” | Watch all three | Their central differences are focus, tone and roster scale, not minor variations of one plot. |
Bottom line: the 2009 film is the best choice for Chun-Li fans in the narrow sense that it makes her the story’s lead. The 1994 film is the better pick for ensemble camp and legacy star power, while the 2026 film is the option for a current reboot and cast—tempered by AP’s negative review. Decide whether “best” means character focus, nostalgic spectacle or novelty, and the viewing choice becomes straightforward.
