Street Fighter 6 is the better starting point for most new players. It offers Modern controls that simplify special-move inputs, plus single-player and practice options that let you learn before focusing on matches against other people. Choose Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike first if its classic style and parry-centered defense are what excite you—and you are happy to learn a timing-heavy system.

Why Street Fighter 6 is the easier first recommendation
Capcom describes Modern and Dynamic as options intended to improve accessibility for first-time players and people returning after a break. Modern uses simple button combinations for special attacks, reducing the need to learn traditional motion inputs right away. It is an option, not a requirement: Classic controls remain available in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub, and World Tour. Capcom Support’s control guide

The modes offer distinct ways into the game. World Tour gives you a single-player story route, while Fighting Ground is where to go for the core fighting modes and training. Battle Hub provides a place to meet and play against others. Dynamic controls are narrower: Capcom describes them as suited to quick, casual offline play and limits them to certain Fighting Ground modes, so they should not be treated as an online control option. What makes 3rd Strike appealing—and demanding
3rd Strike is the better first pick when its particular feel is the point: its parry mechanic gives defense a distinctive role. Capcom designer Tomoshi Sadamoto explains that a player can nullify an incoming attack by pressing toward the opponent for an upper attack or down for a lower attack as it arrives. Capcom’s interview with Sadamoto
That defense rewards anticipation and precise timing rather than relying only on blocking. For a newcomer, it creates a steeper early learning curve: you are not just learning when to defend, but which directional input to use and when to commit to it. If experimenting with that system sounds more appealing than having a gentler control on-ramp, the extra challenge may be a reason to start with 3rd Strike, not a reason to avoid it.
