Street Fighter II editions are successive revisions, not unrelated games. Champion Edition makes the four bosses playable and adds mirror matches; Turbo/Hyper Fighting speeds up battles and adjusts moves and balance; Super Street Fighter II adds four fighters and a major presentation refresh; and Super Street Fighter II Turbo adds Super Combos, air combos and Akuma.
The name on the box can vary by platform and region. In particular, Nintendo’s home release is titled Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, so “Turbo” and “Hyper Fighting” usually describe the same speed-focused revision rather than two separate steps in the series.

Street Fighter II editions at a glance
This table shows the practical differences that matter when choosing a version. “Original roster” means the fighters from the first arcade edition; later revisions retain that foundation unless a change is noted.
| Edition | Roster and bosses | Core gameplay changes | Presentation and systems | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter II: Champion Edition | Adds M. Bison, Vega, Balrog and Sagat as selectable fighters, bringing the roster to 12. Both players can choose the same character. | Uses the original Street Fighter II pace and fundamentals. | Introduces mirror matches; the four bosses are no longer restricted to the computer. | Players who want the classic version with every original boss available. |
| Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting Often sold as Turbo |
Keeps the Champion Edition roster. | Faster battles, improved balance and new moves for some characters, including a fireball for Chun-Li. | A more thorough Champion Edition update focused on competitive speed and matchup changes. | Players who want the traditional roster with a quicker, more aggressive feel. |
| Super Street Fighter II | Adds Cammy, T. Hawk, Dee Jay and Fei Long. | Reworks the existing game while preserving the established one-on-one format. | New ending screens, sound effects, a scoring system and quality-of-life improvements. The score system introduces terms such as “reversals” and “first attacks.” | Players who want four new fighters and a substantial audiovisual refresh. |
| Super Street Fighter II Turbo | Keeps the Super roster and adds Akuma as a hidden boss and playable character. | Adds Super Combos and air combos while combining the Super foundation with the earlier Turbo/Hyper Fighting approach. | Generally regarded by Capcom as the final major version of Street Fighter II. | Players who want the fullest classic feature set and the most advanced mechanics of this line. |
Why Street Fighter II has so many editions
The arcade series evolved through revisions rather than a single annual sequel structure. Capcom adjusted the game after players experienced the original release: bosses became playable, mirror matches were enabled, speed and character balance changed, new fighters were introduced, and later systems expanded what a round could contain.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That history explains why two cabinets can both say “Street Fighter II” while playing noticeably differently. The editions share the same basic six-button controls, special-move inputs and best-of-three-round format, but the roster, speed, scoring and advanced techniques depend on the exact revision.
Capcom describes Champion Edition as the release that added the four boss characters and brought the playable total to 12. Its retrospective calls Hyper Fighting a more thorough update whose biggest change was increased battle speed. Super is presented as a dramatic re-imagining, while Super Turbo is generally treated as the line’s final version.
Champion Edition: the boss-unlock and mirror-match revision
What changed
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition takes the original game’s eight-fighter foundation and makes the four computer-controlled bosses selectable: M. Bison, Vega, Balrog and Sagat. Their inclusion raises the roster to 12 playable characters.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This is more than a roster correction. Champion Edition also lets both players select the same character. A mirror match such as Ryu versus Ryu or Chun-Li versus Chun-Li was not available in the first release, so this revision changes tournament possibilities and casual play immediately.
What did not change
Champion Edition is not the speed-focused revision. Its appeal is the original Street Fighter II feel with the complete first-generation roster. If you are trying to reproduce the earliest competitive format while still using the bosses, this is the relevant edition.
Who should choose it
- Choose Champion Edition for the most straightforward classic experience.
- Choose it when M. Bison, Vega, Balrog and Sagat must be playable but later Super characters are not wanted.
- Choose it for mirror matches without the faster pace and additional mechanics of later revisions.
Turbo and Hyper Fighting: the speed-focused follow-up
Are Turbo and Hyper Fighting the same game?
Usually, yes. Hyper Fighting is the arcade-era name, while Turbo is commonly used on home releases. The exact title depends on the platform and region. Nintendo’s official product name, for example, is Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, which it identifies as the third release of the original Street Fighter II series.

When comparing listings, treat “Turbo,” “Hyper Fighting” and “Turbo: Hyper Fighting” as labels that may point to the same revision, then verify the platform and included version. Do not assume that every product using the word “Turbo” contains the Super roster or Akuma; those features belong to Super Turbo.

How Turbo/Hyper Fighting plays
Hyper Fighting increases battle speed and improves character balancing. Faster movement and shorter pauses make neutral play, reactions and pressure feel more demanding than in Champion Edition. The update also gives some characters new moves; Capcom specifically cites a fireball for Chun-Li.
The roster remains the Champion Edition roster, so you still have the four selectable bosses and mirror matches, but none of the four Super newcomers. Turbo is therefore a refinement of the existing cast rather than a new-character edition.
Who should choose it
- Choose Turbo/Hyper Fighting if you want the classic 12-character cast at a quicker pace.
- Choose it when improved balance and additional character moves matter more than new fighters or Super Combos.
- Choose it for the specific home version labeled Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting when platform compatibility is important.
Super Street Fighter II: four new fighters and a broader refresh
The new characters
Super Street Fighter II adds four fighters to the established cast:
- Cammy
- T. Hawk
- Dee Jay
- Fei Long
These additions are the clearest way to identify Super. If a release contains those four characters but does not have Akuma or Super Combos, it is the Super stage rather than Super Turbo.

Presentation and scoring changes
Super is a larger overhaul than Champion Edition or Hyper Fighting. Capcom describes it as a dramatic re-imagining, with new ending screens, new sound effects, a scoring system and quality-of-life improvements.

The scoring system also introduces terminology that became part of Street Fighter’s competitive vocabulary, including “reversals” and “first attacks.” Those terms describe events recorded by the game’s scoring and round systems; they are not additional selectable characters or separate modes.
Who should choose it
- Choose Super when the four new fighters are the priority.
- Choose it if you want a more polished audiovisual presentation and explicit scoring feedback.
- Choose it when you prefer the Super roster but do not need the advanced Super Turbo mechanics.
Super Street Fighter II Turbo: the fullest classic feature set
What Super Turbo adds
Super Street Fighter II Turbo keeps the Super roster and layers on the mechanics associated with the Turbo revision. It introduces Super Combos, powerful special attacks that can turn a round around when a player has built enough meter, and adds air combos, allowing certain attacks to connect while the opponent is airborne.
It also debuts Akuma as both a hidden boss and a playable character. Akuma is not part of Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting or standard Super, so his presence is a reliable sign that you are looking at Super Turbo or a compilation that includes it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why it is often called the final version
Capcom generally describes Super Turbo as the final version of the game. It combines the Super roster and presentation work with the faster, more aggressive direction established by Hyper Fighting, then adds its own combo systems and Akuma encounter.
“Final” does not mean every later collection uses exactly the same settings. Modern compilations can include training options, display filters, save states or multiple regional revisions around the original game. The underlying arcade identity, however, is Super Turbo.
Who should choose it
- Choose Super Turbo if you want Cammy, T. Hawk, Dee Jay, Fei Long and Akuma together.
- Choose it if Super Combos and air combos are essential.
- Choose it when you want the most feature-complete classic Street Fighter II ruleset rather than the earliest historical version.
How the roster grows from edition to edition

| Super Street Fighter II Turbo | Super roster plus Akuma. | Super Combos, air combos and a hidden Akuma boss. |

Speed and balance
The major pace change arrives with Hyper Fighting. Champion Edition preserves the more measured original rhythm, while Turbo/Hyper Fighting accelerates battles and adjusts balance. Super Turbo carries that faster direction forward.

Moves
Hyper Fighting adds new moves for some fighters, with Chun-Li’s fireball as the clearest documented example. Super does not primarily identify itself through a single universal move system; its headline change is the new cast and presentation. Super Turbo then adds Super Combos and air combos as system-level mechanics.
Scoring and round feedback
Super introduces a scoring system and the associated “reversals” and “first attacks” terminology. Earlier editions focus more narrowly on winning rounds and matches without that expanded scoring presentation.
Mirror matches and bosses
Champion Edition establishes mirror-match support and makes the four original bosses playable. Those features remain part of the later revisions, so selecting Super or Super Turbo does not mean giving them up.

Pick Champion Edition for historical simplicity
Buy or play Champion Edition when you want the original eight-fighter design expanded only enough to include the bosses and mirror matches. It is the cleanest choice for understanding the first major revision without introducing later speed or Super systems.
Pick Turbo/Hyper Fighting for faster classic matches
Choose Turbo/Hyper Fighting when speed, balance adjustments and a few new character moves are more important than additional fighters. Confirm the exact product title because home releases may say “Turbo: Hyper Fighting” even when arcade references use “Hyper Fighting.”
Pick Super for the four newcomers
Choose Super if Cammy, T. Hawk, Dee Jay and Fei Long are the reason you are buying. You also get refreshed endings, sound effects, scoring and quality-of-life changes without moving all the way to Super Turbo’s advanced mechanics.

Arcade names, home ports and buying checks
Platform labeling matters because the same revision can be marketed under different names. Before purchasing a cartridge, disc or digital release, check these details:
- Read the full title. Look for “Champion Edition,” “Hyper Fighting,” “Turbo: Hyper Fighting,” “Super” or “Super Turbo,” not just “Street Fighter II.”
- Verify the roster in the listing. Four bosses indicate Champion Edition or later; Cammy, T. Hawk, Dee Jay and Fei Long indicate Super or later; Akuma indicates Super Turbo.
- Confirm the platform and region. Home versions can use different naming conventions, and a release for one console or territory may not run on another without the correct hardware or service.
- Check whether it is an original port or a modern compilation. A collection may bundle several editions and add convenience features that were not present in the arcade release.
- Check authenticity and condition for physical media. Verify the seller, cartridge or disc authenticity, label accuracy and whether the listing is an original release or a later compilation.
