Start with a wired Ethernet test, then determine whether the problem is the network path, the other player’s connection, or your game’s frame rate. Street Fighter 6 uses peer-to-peer network battles. Wi-Fi interference, strict NAT, router filtering, relay connections, and an opponent’s ISP can all produce delayed-feeling controls, canceled matchmaking, or communication errors. On PC, unstable frame times can feel identical to network input delay, so performance must be checked separately.
Use the sequence below from least disruptive to most technical. It begins with a clean baseline, identifies relay versus direct peer-to-peer play, checks NAT, and ends with evidence you can give Capcom support.

Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
The fastest fix depends on whether every match is affected, only one opponent is affected, or the controls feel slow while the game is also rendering unevenly. Use this triage table before changing router or firewall settings.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| What you notice | Likely scope | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Inputs feel late against most opponents | Your wireless path, local congestion, relay path, or unstable PC frame time | Play one match over direct Ethernet and check frame-rate stability |
| Matchmaking repeatedly cancels or shows a communication error | NAT incompatibility, router filtering, peer timeout, or a temporary local network problem | Restart network equipment, inspect NAT status, and record the exact error code |
| Ranked and casual work, but a custom room with one friend fails | Player-specific NAT, ISP restriction, or router filtering on one side | Test another opponent and have both players compare NAT and router settings |
| Controls feel delayed only when the picture stutters | Frame-time or graphics performance problem rather than network latency | Check frame rate, drivers, background applications, and graphics quality |
| The pre-match screen identifies a relay connection | Direct peer-to-peer negotiation failed | Improve reachability on both sides; expect lower match quality until a direct path is established |
This classification prevents a common mistake: changing DNS or forwarding random ports when the real problem is a saturated Wi-Fi channel or an overloaded PC.

How Street Fighter 6 connects online
Street Fighter 6 online battles are based on peer-to-peer connections rather than a single game server carrying every match. Your console or PC negotiates a path to the other player. The quality of that path depends on both networks, not just your download speed.
Direct peer-to-peer play
A direct peer-to-peer path is the preferred arrangement. When both players can reach one another through their routers and ISPs, the game can exchange match data without an intermediate relay. A fast internet plan does not guarantee this outcome: inbound filtering, carrier-grade NAT, or incompatible router policies can still prevent direct negotiation.
Relay connections
If the required network path cannot be established, Street Fighter 6 may fall back to a relay connection. Capcom’s matchmaking guidance warns that match quality will be poor when a relay is used. A relay is therefore a useful diagnostic clue, not proof that your controller or console is defective.
Look at the pre-match screen for the network icon above the player title. Capcom describes separate indicators for a relay connection and a proper peer-to-peer connection. Check the icon before accepting a match and note whether poor-feeling games correlate with relay sessions.
Step 1: create a clean network baseline
Do the reversible checks first. They remove temporary congestion and tell you whether the problem follows your home network.

- Close Street Fighter 6. Exit to the platform dashboard or desktop so the next test starts with a fresh network session.
- Power down the modem and router. Disconnect power, wait before reconnecting as Capcom recommends, then restore the modem first and the router second. Wait until the router reports a normal internet connection.
- Pause other traffic. Temporarily disconnect or pause other PCs, phones, streaming devices, cloud backups, large downloads, and software updates. Capcom notes that multiple active devices can make the connection unstable.
- Use Ethernet for the test. Connect the console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. If the device is currently on Wi-Fi, do not judge the wired test until the wireless connection has been completely disabled.
- Run several matches. Test more than one opponent and note whether the pre-match icon is direct peer-to-peer or relay. One good match is not enough to establish a baseline.
A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical way to perform this test when the device is using Wi-Fi. It can remove radio interference and variable signal strength, but it cannot repair a remote player’s network, a provider outage, or unstable PC frame rate.
Is Wi-Fi causing the input delay?
Wi-Fi can add variable delay even when an internet speed test reports a high headline speed. The relevant problem is usually jitter: packets spend different amounts of time crossing the wireless link, especially when the signal is weak or the channel is busy. Other household traffic can also make the queue fluctuate from moment to moment.
What a wired comparison tells you
If the same game and opponent feel consistent over Ethernet but erratic over Wi-Fi, the wireless link is the most likely local cause. Keep the cable connected for competitive play, or improve the access point’s placement and reduce nearby interference if cabling is impossible.
If Ethernet produces the same relay icon, canceled matches, or opponent-specific errors, Wi-Fi was not the only issue. Continue to NAT and peer testing instead of repeatedly changing wireless channels.
Step 2: check relay versus direct peer-to-peer status
Make the pre-match indicator part of your troubleshooting notes. Record the icon, opponent, mode, and whether the match felt normal. A pattern is more useful than a single impression.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- Direct peer-to-peer icon: the game negotiated the preferred path. If controls still feel wrong, check frame-time stability and local input devices as well as network conditions.
- Relay icon: direct negotiation failed and the game is using an intermediate path. Match quality can be poor even if your connection appears fast.
- Mixed results: some opponents may connect directly while others require a relay because reachability is negotiated between each pair of players.
Do not treat every relay as a global outage. Relay use can be caused by your router, the other player’s router, or restrictions imposed by either ISP.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStep 3: review NAT and router filtering
NAT controls how devices inside your home network are represented to the internet. A strict or otherwise restrictive NAT can make it difficult to establish a peer-to-peer path with certain players. Router packet filtering can have a similar effect.
Inspect, do not guess
- Open your router’s administration page or network-status screen.
- Record the reported NAT status and whether the router says UPnP is enabled.
- Review packet-filtering, firewall, and intrusion-prevention settings that may block peer traffic.
- Check the platform’s own network test and save the result.
- Consult the router and ISP documentation before changing a port, firewall, or security setting.
Capcom’s error guidance associates frequent 50383-MW1 errors with NAT differences, while 50382-MW1 represents a player-to-player connection timeout. These codes identify a connection class, not a guaranteed single setting to change.
UPnP and manual rules
UPnP can let the game request temporary mappings automatically, but behavior varies by router. If UPnP is disabled, broken, or blocked by an upstream gateway, direct connections may fail. If you change the setting, change one item at a time and retest so you know what helped.
There is no universal official Street Fighter 6 port table in the cited Capcom guidance. Do not copy a Street Fighter V port list and present it as an SF6 requirement. Random forwarding rules can expose services, create conflicts, or mask the real problem. Use a port only when Capcom, your platform, router documentation, or ISP specifically identifies it for your setup.

Two routers or carrier-grade NAT
If an ISP gateway feeds a second personal router, both devices may perform NAT. This double-NAT arrangement can interfere with peer reachability. The router status pages may reveal two private-network layers or an upstream gateway address. Your ISP may also use carrier-grade NAT, which limits inbound reachability outside your home. In either case, ask the ISP which supported mode or configuration is available rather than disabling security features blindly.
Step 4: separate network delay from PC frame-rate problems
On PC, a low or unstable frame rate can make controls feel late even when the network path is healthy. Frame-time spikes interrupt the game’s simulation and rendering, producing a heavy or uneven response that players often describe as input delay.
Use Capcom’s PC checklist
- Confirm that the PC meets Street Fighter 6’s minimum system requirements.
- Update the graphics driver and Windows.
- Review graphics-driver settings and the system’s power plan so the GPU and CPU are not being held in a low-power state during play.
- Close background applications, browser tabs, recording tools, overlays, and downloads that compete for CPU, GPU, memory, or disk time.
- In Steam, verify the game cache so damaged or missing files are replaced.
- If frame rate remains unstable, lower the game’s Quality settings to Low or Lowest and restart as needed.
How to tell the difference in a match
Network trouble commonly changes with the opponent or shows a relay indicator. A performance problem usually appears in training mode, menus, or offline fights as well as online. Watch for visible stutter, inconsistent animation pacing, sudden GPU load, or a frame-rate counter that falls below the game’s target. If offline play is also uneven, fix the PC first; changing NAT will not repair rendering.
Once frame times are stable, repeat the wired online test. This two-part comparison prevents you from attributing every sluggish sensation to internet latency.

Step 5: investigate problems limited to one opponent
A connection that fails only with one friend points away from a universal server problem. Capcom notes that a player-to-player timeout limited to one person may indicate a problem in the other player’s network environment.

- Have both players test a match with a different opponent.
- Compare which side can play ranked or casual matches normally.
- Record each player’s wired or Wi-Fi status, NAT report, router model, and exact error code.
- Check UPnP and packet-filtering settings on both routers.
- If one player uses an ISP gateway plus a second router, ask the ISP about double NAT or carrier-grade NAT.
- Retest after one change at a time.
If you can connect to most players but not this friend, do not repeatedly reinstall the game or replace the controller. The peer-specific evidence is more consistent with reachability between the two networks.
Street Fighter 6 communication errors to record
| Error | Meaning indicated by Capcom guidance | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| 50383-MW1 | Frequent occurrences can result from differences in NAT between players | Record both NAT statuses, inspect UPnP and packet filtering, and test another opponent |
| 50382-MW1 | Player-to-player connection timeout | Determine whether it affects every opponent or only one; both players should review router and ISP restrictions |
Write down the full code exactly as displayed. A vague report such as connection failed removes the detail support needs to distinguish a timeout from a matchmaking or platform issue.
Matchmaking modes, disconnections, and penalties
The official online manual lists Ranked Match, Casual Match, and Custom Room. Ranked Match changes League Points; Casual Match does not. A Custom Room is especially useful for testing a friend-specific problem because it makes the pairing explicit.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not intentionally disconnect to escape an unfavorable match. Repeated intentional disconnections can result in penalties, including loss of matchmaking access. If a connection drops unexpectedly, save the time, mode, opponent scope, and any displayed code rather than repeatedly forcing new sessions.
Platform-specific order of operations
Console
- Restart the modem, router, and console.
- Pause other household traffic.
- Move from Wi-Fi to direct Ethernet.
- Run the platform network test and record NAT status.
- Check the pre-match icon across several opponents.
- Review router UPnP and packet filtering only after the baseline test.
PC
- Complete the same network baseline, preferably over Ethernet.
- Test offline or in training mode for frame-rate stability.
- Update Windows and graphics drivers, close background applications, and verify the Steam game cache.
- Lower Quality settings to Low or Lowest if frame time is unstable, then restart.
- Retest online and compare direct versus relay matches.
What not to change first
- Do not start with DNS. The reviewed Capcom material does not establish a universal best DNS setting for Street Fighter 6 input delay or matchmaking.
- Do not assume a global outage. No single current global outage is established by the cited official guidance. Check whether the issue affects all opponents, one opponent, or only your home network before drawing that conclusion.
- Do not forward an old port list. A Street Fighter V list is not evidence of an SF6 requirement.
- Do not blame the controller immediately. Relay status, NAT errors, and frame-time spikes provide stronger evidence for online symptoms.
- Do not change several router options at once. Multiple simultaneous changes make it impossible to identify the cause and can weaken network security.
Build a useful support report
Escalation is more effective when it includes reproducible facts. Before contacting Capcom, collect the following:
- Exact error code and the time it appeared
- Platform: PC, PlayStation, or Xbox
- Mode: Ranked Match, Casual Match, or Custom Room
- Whether the problem affects every opponent or only one friend
- Wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi, including whether the issue changes on Ethernet
- Router NAT status and whether UPnP is enabled
- Whether the pre-match icon showed relay or direct peer-to-peer
- Whether frame rate is stable in training or offline play
- Recent changes to the router, ISP, graphics driver, Windows, or game installation
Capcom’s support index directs players to the Street Fighter 6 online manual, the Steam troubleshooting guide, and its support contact form. Include the evidence above so support can distinguish a local performance issue from a peer-reachability failure.
A practical decision path
- Wi-Fi involved? Switch to Ethernet and retest.
- Other devices active? Pause downloads, streams, updates, and backups, then retest.
- Relay icon present? Inspect NAT, UPnP, packet filtering, and both players’ ISP paths.
- Only one opponent affected? Compare both players’ networks and test another opponent.
- Offline play stutters? Follow the PC performance checklist before changing network settings.
- Error persists with evidence? Record the code and conditions and contact Capcom support.
This order prioritizes changes that are quick and reversible while preserving security and leaving technical router changes until the symptoms justify them.
