Street Fighter 6 Classic vs Modern vs Dynamic Controls: Differences and Which to Choose

Classic is Street Fighter’s traditional six-button control scheme, Modern simplifies special-move inputs and adds assisted combo routes while remaining legal in online modes, and Dynamic uses AI-assisted attacks for quick offline matches only. For most new players who want to play online, Modern is the practical starting point; choose Classic if you specifically want traditional execution, and Dynamic only for casual offline experimentation.

Street Fighter 6 control types at a glance

Street Fighter 6 gives every player three distinct control philosophies rather than one fixed input system. The choice changes how you perform attacks, how much execution the game asks from you, and where that character can be used. It is not merely a difficulty toggle.

Control type How inputs work Best fit Online play Where it is available
Classic Traditional six-button layout with command inputs Experienced players, arcade-style learners and anyone wanting the established Street Fighter vocabulary Yes Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour
Modern Simplified special-move inputs plus assisted combo routes Beginners, returning players and anyone who wants a lower execution burden Yes Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, including online modes
Dynamic AI-assisted attack selection for immediate, casual play Local games, family play and quick character experimentation No Certain offline Fighting Ground modes only

The hard restriction is Dynamic’s mode access. Classic and Modern can be used online; Dynamic cannot. If your goal includes Battle Hub or any other online match, remove Dynamic from consideration before comparing anything else.

How Classic controls work

The traditional six-button layout

Classic preserves the control language used by earlier Street Fighter games: six attack buttons arranged around light, medium and heavy punches and kicks, plus the directional commands associated with special moves. Nintendo describes it as a “Traditional six-button setup,” while Capcom presents it as the familiar option for players who already know conventional fighting-game inputs.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

With Classic, you perform a character’s commands directly. A special move normally requires the directional sequence shown in that character’s command list followed by an attack button. The system therefore rewards precise timing, motion control and knowing which attack strength you intend to use. The benefit is direct access to the traditional input vocabulary rather than an abstraction built around a smaller number of buttons.

Who should choose Classic?

  • Players with Street Fighter experience: Your existing muscle memory transfers naturally.
  • Players studying traditional execution: Classic makes directional motions, charge timing and button-strength choices part of the core lesson.
  • Players who want the broadest direct control: You decide the attack button and command input instead of relying on an assisted route.
  • Players planning to move between older and newer fighting games: The six-button structure is the closest match to the genre’s conventional layout.

Classic is available in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, so choosing it does not limit your modes. The trade-off is that the execution workload is yours: missed motions, wrong button strengths and timing errors are part of learning the system.

How Modern controls work

Special moves with simpler inputs

Modern is designed for people who find traditional fighting-game inputs intimidating or simply want attacks to come out more consistently. Capcom’s June 2, 2022 explanation describes a special move being performed by combining the “Special Move” button with one directional input. Nintendo summarizes the same idea as a “New control layout for one-button special moves.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not mean every action is literally a single button in every situation. The relevant pattern is a dedicated Special Move input combined with a direction, replacing the longer command motion used by Classic. You still need to choose a direction and understand which move that direction represents, but the physical sequence is shorter and easier to repeat under pressure.

Assisted combo routes

Modern also adds an Assist input. Holding Assist while pressing attack buttons produces simple, assisted combo routes. This gives a newcomer a way to experience a connected sequence of attacks without first memorizing every timing link. It is useful for learning a character’s rhythm, seeing how attacks flow together and getting through the first matches without freezing over execution.

Assistance is a route through the character’s attacks, not a replacement for decision-making. You still have to choose when to approach, defend, punish or spend a resource. Modern lowers the mechanical barrier to those decisions; it does not decide the match for you.

Who should choose Modern?

  • First-time fighting-game players: You can concentrate on movement, blocking and spacing while learning the character.
  • Returning players: Modern lets you play immediately if older command inputs are rusty.
  • Online learners: Unlike Dynamic, Modern works in online modes, including Battle Hub.
  • Players with access needs or limited input comfort: Shorter sequences can make play more manageable. The right choice depends on your own comfort and the character you select.

Modern is available in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour. Because it remains usable online, it is the most flexible low-execution option in the game’s three-control lineup.

How Dynamic controls work

AI-assisted attacks for casual play

Dynamic is the most automated option. Nintendo labels it “Battle with AI-assisted attacks,” and Capcom positions it for quick, casual games with friends and family and for learning a character’s basics. Rather than asking you to select every attack through the traditional six-button layout or Modern’s simplified commands, the game assists with attack selection.

That makes Dynamic useful when the priority is getting into a match quickly, handing a controller to someone unfamiliar with fighting games or sampling a character before committing to a deeper control scheme. It is intentionally less demanding than the other two options.

The decisive limitation: no online matches

Dynamic is restricted to certain offline Fighting Ground modes. It cannot be used in online matches. That means it is not an alternative for Battle Hub sessions or any plan that depends on online competition. If you are buying the game primarily to play with remote friends, use Classic or Modern instead.

The exact offline mode availability can depend on the current version and platform. Treat the mode selector in your installed game as the final authority, especially after updates. The official descriptions establish the important rule: Dynamic is offline-only and limited to designated Fighting Ground modes.

Classic vs Modern: the decision that matters for most players

Most buyers are deciding between Classic and Modern, because both support the full range of modes listed for them and both work online. The question is how much execution you want between an idea and an attack.

If your priority is… Start with… Reason
Playing online as soon as possible with simple special inputs Modern It combines a lower execution burden with online availability.
Learning the established Street Fighter command system Classic It retains the six-button layout and traditional command inputs.
Teaching a friend during a local session Dynamic or Modern Dynamic is quickest for casual offline play; Modern remains useful if you may later go online.
Moving from an older Street Fighter game Classic The familiar six-button structure minimizes control-language changes.
Learning fundamentals before worrying about execution Modern Assisted specials and combo routes leave more attention for movement, defense and matchup knowledge.

There is no evidence that one control type is universally “better.” The official material defines their input philosophies and mode availability, not a global win-rate ranking. Character-specific move access, damage, feel and tournament rules can vary by character, patch, event and platform, so do not infer competitive results from the control labels alone.

Are Modern controls easier for beginners?

Yes, in the specific sense that Modern reduces the physical complexity of special moves and supplies assisted combo routes. A beginner can perform a special by combining the Special Move button with a directional input instead of first mastering a longer command motion. Holding Assist while pressing attacks provides a guided way to produce simple combos.

“Easier” does not mean “automatic victory.” A new player still has to learn:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How to move and block safely.
  • When an opponent is vulnerable.
  • Which direction to press for the desired special move.
  • How to recognize the character’s effective range.
  • When to stop attacking and defend.

Modern is therefore best understood as an easier entry to Street Fighter’s decisions, not a mode that removes the need to make decisions. If you later want the traditional motions, you can use your experience with Modern to learn Classic concepts one at a time.

A practical way to test a control type

You do not need to commit permanently on your first session. Use a short, repeatable comparison so that the choice reflects your goals rather than the first few minutes of unfamiliarity.

  1. Choose one character and stay with that character. Switching characters at the same time as controls makes it impossible to tell which change caused the difficulty.
  2. Try Modern first if you are new. Perform the character’s basic movement, one Special Move direction and an assisted combo route. Note whether you can think about spacing instead of the buttons.
  3. Try Classic with the same character. Repeat the equivalent actions using the command inputs shown by the game. Pay attention to whether the traditional motions feel satisfying or merely obstructive.
  4. Use Dynamic only for its intended test. In an eligible offline Fighting Ground mode, see whether AI-assisted attacks make a local session more enjoyable. Do not use that session to judge your readiness for online play, because Dynamic is unavailable there.
  5. Make the mode requirement your tie-breaker. If you intend to play online, select Classic or Modern regardless of how convenient Dynamic felt locally.

When practicing, check the current in-game command list for the character rather than relying on a generic example. The available actions and their feel can differ by character, and updates can change details.

What can change by character, patch or event?

The three labels describe the control philosophy, but they do not guarantee identical results for every character. The official descriptions do not establish a universal list of which moves, damage values or combo routes are available under each control type. Those details can vary by character and by game update.

  • Character differences: A simplified input or assisted route may feel more useful on one character than another.
  • Patch differences: Updates can alter move behavior, timing or balance without changing the name of the control type.
  • Event rules: A tournament or special event can impose its own rules, so check that event’s current regulations instead of assuming every setting is accepted.
  • Platform differences: Menus and controller layouts can differ between platforms even when the three control philosophies remain the same.

For a current, character-specific answer, open the command list and control settings in your own version of the game. Do not treat a general Classic-versus-Modern explanation as a substitute for those current details.

Street Fighter 6 on Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo lists Street Fighter 6 for Nintendo Switch 2 with a release date of May 6, 2025, published by CAPCOM. Its product information also lists a Years 1-2 Fighters Edition containing additional characters and stages. Edition contents and availability can vary by region and platform, so confirm the listing for the store and territory where you plan to buy.

The edition does not change the basic control decision described here: Classic is the traditional six-button option, Modern is the simplified online-capable option, and Dynamic is the AI-assisted offline option. Check the platform’s current software update and the in-game mode selector for the controls and modes available in your installation.

Bottom line for each type of player

Choose Classic when execution is part of the fun

Classic is the right answer if you want six attack buttons, traditional command inputs and the broadest direct control over how attacks are selected. It works in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, including online play.

Choose Modern when you want an accessible online starting point

Modern is the strongest default for a beginner who wants to play real online matches. Special Move plus direction inputs and assisted combo routes reduce the initial execution burden without removing online access.

Choose Dynamic for a quick offline session

Dynamic is appropriate for casual local play, family introductions and rapid character experimentation. Its AI-assisted attacks are intentionally convenient, but its restriction to certain offline Fighting Ground modes and its lack of online support make it unsuitable as your only control type if remote play matters.
