Street Fighter (1994) is a Guile-led military hostage-rescue story, while Mortal Kombat (1995) is a tournament adventure in which Earth’s fighters face an Outworld threat. Both films use recognizable characters from fighting games, but they give those characters completely different narrative jobs. This comparison focuses on that adaptation choice—not on declaring one film better or claiming either is definitively more faithful to its game.
There is also a current naming trap: a separate live-action Street Fighter film was announced for release on October 16, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, that newer film had not yet reached its scheduled release date. Unless stated otherwise, “Street Fighter” below means the 1994 film.

The short answer: mission movie versus tournament movie
The clearest difference is each film’s story engine—the mechanism that moves the plot from one sequence to the next.

| Street Fighter (1994) | A military rescue mission against General Bison in Shadaloo | Several game characters are gathered around Colonel Guile and an allied operation | Hostages, ransom demands, and Bison’s escalation toward human weapons |
| Mortal Kombat (1995) | A supernatural tournament involving Earth and Outworld | Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade function as Earth’s representatives | Whether Earth can withstand the threat posed by Outworld |
That distinction affects nearly everything else: whose decisions matter most, why the characters travel, how confrontations are connected, and what a viewer is expected to understand before the fighting begins. Street Fighter treats its roster as an ensemble inside a military action plot. Mortal Kombat treats its roster as a group of champions assembled for a contest with cosmic consequences.

Which films are being compared?
Street Fighter (1994)
Sony Pictures’ official synopsis identifies Steven E. de Souza as the film’s director and writer. Its listed cast includes Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá as Bison, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, Byron Mann as Ryu, and Damian Chapa as Ken. The setting is the Southeast Asian military state of Shadaloo, where General Bison takes foreigners hostage and demands a ransom. The crisis expands when Bison pursues plans involving human weapons, prompting Colonel Guile to lead allied fighters into enemy territory.
Mortal Kombat (1995)
The American Film Institute records Mortal Kombat as a 101-minute, PG-13 adventure directed by Paul Anderson and written by Kevin Droney. AFI credits it as based on the video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias and lists Christopher Lambert, Robin Shou, Linden Ashby, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and Bridgette Wilson among the cast. Hulu’s synopsis frames the story around Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade representing Earth in a tournament against Outworld.
How Street Fighter turns a fighting-game roster into a military thriller
Guile is the organizing point
The 1994 film does not begin with a formal competition that gives every fighter an equal reason to participate. Instead, its premise places Guile at the center of a command structure. He is the officer responding to Bison’s hostage crisis, and the allied fighters are connected to the mission he leads. That makes the film’s central question operational: how can the heroes reach the enemy, confront Bison, and resolve the hostage situation?
This approach gives the adaptation a single directional line. The characters may come from a game known for one-on-one matches, but the movie’s basic movement is from the allied side toward Bison’s stronghold. The roster becomes a team assembled for a common objective rather than a bracket of independent competitors.
Bison’s role is political and technological as well as combative
Bison is not presented only as an opponent waiting at the end of a sequence of fights. Sony’s synopsis describes him as the leader of Shadaloo, a hostage-taker demanding ransom, and a figure whose plans escalate toward developing human weapons. Those details give the villain control over a state, a crisis, and a larger project. The conflict therefore has a public dimension: civilians and foreign hostages are caught in a military confrontation.

That framing changes what a fight means. A confrontation can be part of an effort to penetrate enemy territory or protect people, rather than simply a required victory in a tournament. The action is subordinate to the rescue mission’s progress.
The ensemble serves the mission instead of receiving separate tournament arcs
Chun-Li, Ryu, and Ken remain identifiable game characters, but the supplied plot description does not establish a separate competition for each of them. Their adaptation function is to populate Guile’s allied response and connect recognizable names to the military narrative. In practical viewing terms, that means the film’s structure should be read as an ensemble operation with a designated leader, not as a collection of equal fighter introductions.
This is a substantial translation choice. A fighting game can let players select different characters without needing one canonical protagonist. A feature film usually needs a clear line of action. Street Fighter solves that problem by making Guile the mission’s center while retaining other roster members around him.
How Mortal Kombat builds a tournament around Earth’s champions
The tournament supplies the film’s built-in progression
In Mortal Kombat, the competition itself supplies the narrative architecture. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade are presented as Earth’s representatives, and their participation is tied to the threat from Outworld. Each confrontation can therefore be understood as part of a larger contest rather than as an isolated encounter.
A tournament is an especially direct way to adapt a fighting game because it converts the game’s repeated bouts into a diegetic rule: characters fight because the story says the contest determines what happens to Earth. The format also gives the audience an immediate question to track—who advances, and can Earth’s side survive the challenge?

The stakes extend beyond an ordinary sporting event
Hulu’s synopsis describes the tournament as a struggle involving Earth and Outworld. That makes the contest supernatural and geopolitical at the same time. The fighters are not competing for a belt or a personal ranking; they are acting as representatives of a realm under threat.

This larger stake gives the character group a shared purpose without requiring a military chain of command. Liu Kang, Cage, and Sonya can have different personal reasons for entering, yet the tournament links their paths. The story’s organizing principle is the event itself, not one commander’s rescue plan.
Recognition comes through the champions’ roles
The tournament structure also makes character identity easy to explain. Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade are not merely names borrowed from the game; they are the people assigned to defend Earth. Other familiar performers appear in the cast, but the available credits do not establish every character’s screen function in detail, so it is more accurate to keep the comparison centered on the three representatives named in the synopsis.

Why the same kind of game produces such different movies
Games provide characters; films must provide causality
Fighting games can organize content around selectable characters and repeated matches. A movie cannot rely on the player to choose the next opponent or supply motivation through gameplay. It has to answer why these people are together and why the next confrontation occurs.
Street Fighter supplies causality through a military emergency. Bison creates the crisis, hostages make it urgent, and Guile’s command gives the heroes a route into the conflict. Mortal Kombat supplies causality through the tournament. The Earth-versus-Outworld premise explains why the characters gather and why each bout belongs to the same story.

One favors command; the other favors representation
Guile’s position gives Street Fighter a hierarchy. The film can frame decisions as orders, objectives, and coordinated action. The heroes are connected because they are part of an allied response.
Mortal Kombat instead emphasizes representation. The central fighters stand for Earth, so their group identity comes from the realm they defend. The tournament is the institution that binds them together. Neither method is automatically more faithful or more cinematic; they simply solve the adaptation problem differently.
The villain changes the scale of the story
Bison’s description as a military ruler makes the conflict territorial and political. His hostage demand creates a crisis that can be discussed in terms of an enemy state and an allied operation. Outworld’s threat creates a mythic scale. The conflict is organized around realms and a contest whose consequences reach beyond the participants.
That difference also affects the audience’s expectations. In the Street Fighter premise, success means stopping Bison’s immediate operation and protecting hostages. In Mortal Kombat, success means surviving the tournament and preventing the threatened outcome for Earth.

Street Fighter: roster members inside Guile’s response
The official cast listing gives the adaptation a clear set of recognizable names: Guile, Bison, Chun-Li, Ryu, and Ken. Their presence signals the connection to the game, but the plot summary places the rescue operation ahead of individual matchup logic. The characters are best understood by their relationship to the Shadaloo crisis: Bison drives it, Guile answers it, and the other fighters belong to the wider response.

Mortal Kombat: champions defined by the event
The synopsis names Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade as Earth’s representatives. Their first-level function is therefore collective and competitive: they are the people carrying Earth’s side of the tournament. The movie can introduce personality differences among them, but the premise already supplies a common destination and a common opponent.
That is why the two films can feel structurally different even when both contain familiar fighters. In one, characters are attached to a mission led by an officer. In the other, characters are attached to a championship-like event with supernatural stakes.
Does either film prove it is the more faithful adaptation?
Not from the evidence available here. The official plot descriptions establish what each movie chose to emphasize, but they do not provide a neutral score for fidelity to every game mechanic, character biography, or visual detail. Calling one film “more faithful” would require a separate, defined comparison with the games and a clear standard for what counts as faithfulness.

A more defensible conclusion is narrower: both films retain recognizable game characters while redesigning the surrounding story. Street Fighter builds a military rescue narrative around Guile and Bison’s hostage crisis. Mortal Kombat builds a tournament narrative around Earth’s representatives and Outworld. Those are observable differences in premise and structure, not a verdict on quality.
How to watch the pair as a useful comparison
- Start with Street Fighter (1994). Track how quickly the film establishes Bison’s hostage crisis, Guile’s leadership, and the allied mission. Notice which characters are connected through the operation rather than through a formal bracket.
- Follow with Mortal Kombat (1995). Watch for the point at which Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade become Earth’s representatives and how the tournament gives their encounters a shared purpose.
- Compare the source of urgency. In the first film, urgency comes from hostages, ransom, and Bison’s escalating plans. In the second, it comes from the threat to Earth and the need to prevail in the tournament.
- Compare the role of the ensemble. Ask whether the group is moving under one commander or advancing through a contest. That single question reveals the principal adaptation difference more reliably than counting fights or cameos.
AFI lists Mortal Kombat at 101 minutes with a PG-13 rating. The cited Sony Pictures page does not state a runtime or rating for Street Fighter, so the films should not be presented as a verified runtime or classification match.
What about the newer Street Fighter film?
Capcom announced on September 5, 2025, that filming had commenced on a new live-action Street Fighter movie and gave it a scheduled release date of October 16, 2026. The announcement listed Noah Centineo as Ken, Andrew Koji as Ryu, and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. On October 13, 2026, that date was still in the future. It should therefore not be described as an already released alternative in a comparison of the 1994 and 1995 films.
The newer project matters mainly because the unqualified phrase “Street Fighter movie” can now refer to more than one production. Adding the year—1994 for the film discussed here, or 2026 for the announced project—removes that ambiguity.

Street Fighter (1994) adapts its game roster by placing Guile, Chun-Li, Ryu, Ken, and Bison inside a military hostage-rescue plot centered on Shadaloo. Mortal Kombat (1995) adapts its roster by making Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade Earth’s representatives in a tournament against Outworld. The former is organized like an allied operation; the latter is organized like a realm-defining competition. That difference in story engine is what makes the adaptations distinct.
