First, distinguish a video that stutters while the broadcast stays live from a broadcast that actually ends early. For lag or freezing, check the source video’s bitrate: StreamYard says prerecorded video supports a maximum bitrate of 10 MB/s, and recommends reducing higher-bitrate files before uploading. If the broadcast truly drops, check network stability separately; the available StreamYard guidance does not establish one universal cause or guaranteed fix for a full prerecorded-stream disconnect.
1. Identify what “disconnecting” means
Watch what happens on the destination platform and in StreamYard. These symptoms point to different checks:
- The video freezes or stutters, but the broadcast remains live: inspect the file’s bitrate and encoding first. StreamYard’s prerecorded-specific optimization advice addresses lagging and freezing. StreamYard’s video optimization guide.
- The broadcast ends while the video should still be playing: check the connection and look for an error from the destination. General network advice may help identify instability, but it is not a confirmed diagnosis for every prerecorded broadcast. StreamYard’s internet speed guide.
- The full video finishes, then the broadcast ends: that is expected behavior for a scheduled prerecorded stream; StreamYard says it ends when the video finishes. StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream article.
A missing copy in StreamYard’s library is also not, on its own, evidence of a dropped broadcast. StreamYard says prerecorded streams are no longer automatically saved to the library.
2. Fix lag or freezing by re-encoding the video
StreamYard states that prerecorded streaming supports a maximum video bitrate of 10 MB/s. It says a higher-bitrate video should be reduced before upload because it can cause lagging and freezing. This is the most directly relevant documented check when the stream stays live but playback is choppy.

- Check the source file’s bitrate. If it exceeds 10 MB/s, re-encode it before uploading. The figure is StreamYard’s product guidance, not a guarantee that every lower-bitrate file will play without problems.
- Open the file in HandBrake and choose MP4 as the output format.
- Enable “Web Optimized” and “Align A/V Start.” These are settings StreamYard’s optimization guide recommends for the converted file.
- Export the converted video, then upload that new file to StreamYard and use it for the prerecorded broadcast.
StreamYard’s guide recommends this workflow for a high-bitrate video; it is not an independently tested fix for a broadcast that fully disconnects.
3. Check format, file size, and plan limits
An upload problem can prevent a file from being used reliably, so confirm that it meets StreamYard’s current requirements. The Help Center’s recommended-formats article lists MP4 and MOV for video-library uploads and recommends H.264 video with AAC audio. Its listed maximum file sizes are 10 GB on Core and Advanced, and 25 GB on Teams and Business. StreamYard’s requirements and recommended formats.

The prerecorded-stream article describes MP4 with H.264 and also gives upload limits. Product plans and requirements can change, so check the limits shown in your account’s current upload flow rather than relying on an older plan description.
4. If the broadcast actually drops, test network stability
StreamYard’s connection recommendations are general streaming advice, not a prerecorded-specific diagnosis. Its internet-speed article recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and prefers 7 Mbps or higher; its general Requirements article recommends at least 5 Mbps for both upload and download. These are service recommendations, not evidence that a particular connection caused a dropout.

- Use Ethernet directly to the router if possible; StreamYard recommends a wired connection when available.
- Test upload speed and check for packet loss or fluctuating bandwidth, not just a single speed-test result.
- Pause large downloads, backups, and other heavy network activity; limit competing use of the connection while streaming.
- For persistent general connection trouble, restart the router and computer, close unused tabs and apps, then try another network or device if available.
These checks can help reveal network instability. They do not guarantee recovery or prove that the network caused a prerecorded broadcast to end.
5. Check whether the stream ended normally
For a scheduled prerecorded broadcast, StreamYard says the broadcast starts at the selected scheduled time and ends after the video finishes. If the destination shows the complete video and then ends, compare the end time with the video’s duration before treating it as a disconnection. The separate note that prerecorded streams are not automatically saved to the StreamYard library concerns the saved output, not whether the destination broadcast ran.

6. Escalate an early ending with useful details
If re-encoding does not address stuttering, or the broadcast still ends early after you check the connection, contact StreamYard support with a concise record of the incident. Include:
- The scheduled broadcast time and destination platform.
- Whether the video stopped, the destination ended, or only StreamYard showed an error.
- The source file’s format and bitrate, plus its size.
- The exact error message, if one appeared.
- Whether you used Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether competing network activity was paused.
StreamYard’s published guidance covers file optimization and general connection checks, but does not provide a universal recovery sequence for a full prerecorded-broadcast disconnect.
