The trophy asks you to complete the game in under two hours on PS4 or PS5, while Any% is a leaderboard category with separate platform-generation and glitch-policy boards. If this is your first timed attempt, learn the game first and target roughly 1:30 for a practical safety margin. Choose Any% when you want a ranked run, but decide your platform and ruleset before comparing times.
What the two run types actually measure
The word “speedrun” covers two different goals in Stray. A trophy attempt is a personal completion target: finish the game quickly enough to unlock I am Speed. An Any% attempt is a rules-defined performance intended for a leaderboard. You can complete the trophy without ever submitting a time, and a leaderboard run is not automatically a trophy attempt unless it also finishes below the trophy limit.

| Aspect | Any% leaderboard run | Trophy-focused run |
|---|---|---|
| Primary objective | Finish as quickly as the selected leaderboard permits | Complete Stray in less than two hours to unlock I am Speed |
| Completion requirement | No 100% collection requirement | No requirement to earn every trophy or collect everything |
| Rules source | The selected Stray category’s live leaderboard rules | The in-game trophy condition and your own route |
| Platform boards | Current Gen, Last Gen and PC are separate boards | The trophy listing covers PS4 and PS5 |
| Glitch policy | Glitchless and Unrestricted are separate categories | You may use the route that works for you, but it is not a Glitchless leaderboard run unless it follows that board’s rules |
| Best suited to | Ranked competition, route optimization and record progression | A structured personal challenge and trophy completion |
That distinction matters because a time only has meaning in the context in which it was produced. A fast PC Unrestricted run, a PS5 Glitchless run and a PS4 trophy attempt may all be impressive, but they are not automatically comparable performances.
How Stray’s Any% leaderboard is divided
Any% and 100% are different completion goals
Stray’s leaderboard offers a full-game Any% category and a 100% category. Any% means reaching the game’s completion endpoint without a requirement to collect every item or trophy. The 100% category is for runners who follow the category’s complete-collection definition, so a 100% time should not be used as a benchmark for an Any% or trophy attempt.

The trophy condition also does not turn a run into 100%. The trophy description says only: “Complete the game in less than 2 hours.” It does not require all memories, badges, collectibles or other trophies.
Platform generation changes the comparison
The Any% page separates Current Gen, Last Gen and PC boards. In practical terms, a Current Gen console time belongs with other Current Gen times, a Last Gen time with Last Gen times and a PC time with PC times. Loading behavior, input hardware and platform performance can affect the experience, which is why the boards are not merged into one universal ranking.
When you write down a goal, record the platform in full rather than saying only “console.” For example, identify whether the attempt is on PS4 or PS5 and, for leaderboard terminology, whether it is being treated as Last Gen or Current Gen. This prevents an apparently faster time from being compared with the wrong board.

Glitchless and Unrestricted are separate rulesets
A Glitchless run follows the restrictions of the Glitchless board. An Unrestricted run permits techniques allowed by that board’s rules, including routes that would not qualify as Glitchless. The two categories exist so runners can compete under a shared definition instead of arguing about which tricks “count.”
If you use a shortcut or exploit during a personal trophy attempt, that does not invalidate the trophy. It does mean you should describe the attempt accurately. Do not label it a Glitchless leaderboard run unless every technique and the rest of the run comply with the current Glitchless rules.
Rules can change after you learn a route
The Stray leaderboard page displayed 2,127 runs, 714 players and 1,490 followers at the cited snapshot; those totals are activity figures, not permanent specifications. Its rule-change notice also says that individual-level runs now end at the first checkpoint of a future chapter. Because category endpoints and submission requirements can change, read the live rules immediately before submitting. A route learned from an older video may still be useful for practice but may finish at the wrong endpoint for a current submission.
What the I am Speed trophy requires
The trophy listing for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 gives one condition: “Complete the game in less than 2 hours.” The wording is a hard limit, so a completion at exactly two hours is not a safe target. Aim comfortably below the limit rather than planning to finish with seconds remaining.

- You do not need to submit your time to a leaderboard.
- The listing covers both PS4 and PS5, but the console you use still affects which Any% board would apply if you later submit the run.
The trophy is therefore a good entry point for players who want a clear finish line without learning submission procedures. You can treat it as a private challenge, record the attempt for your own review, or later convert the experience into a rules-compliant leaderboard run.
Why a first attempt should usually target the trophy
A first run has two jobs: discovering the game and moving quickly through it. Those goals conflict. When you are still learning chapter order, puzzle solutions, movement lines and the two hub-like areas, stopping to protect a leaderboard time adds pressure without giving you useful route knowledge.
The practical recommendation is to play Stray once without a stopwatch. Learn where progression gates are, which interactions are mandatory, how to move through each area, and where an accidental detour costs time. Then make a dedicated timed attempt. A completion around 1:30 leaves approximately 30 minutes under the two-hour trophy limit for mistakes, slower puzzles or a restart. That buffer is more valuable to a new runner than shaving a few seconds from a theoretically perfect route.
Preparation checklist
- Use the PS4 or PS5 edition you intend to play and keep that platform consistent during practice.
- Complete an untimed playthrough or enough exploratory practice to recognize the game’s chapter sequence.
- Write down the required objective in each section, rather than trying to memorize every movement immediately.
- Practice the puzzles and traversal sequences that cause you to stop, backtrack or search.
- Decide whether your goal is only the trophy or a future leaderboard submission; the latter requires reading the live category rules before recording a final run.
- Set a conservative target that leaves room below two hours. The 1:30 recommendation is a useful benchmark, not a leaderboard standard.
A reliable plan for the trophy attempt
The following process keeps the personal trophy challenge separate from leaderboard formalities while still producing a disciplined run.
Recommended Free Tools
- Finish your learning run. Play through the game without trying to optimize every movement. Identify the order of chapters, mandatory objectives, puzzle solutions and transitions through the hub-like areas.
- Choose your route. Use the shortest path you can execute consistently. A route that is a few seconds faster on paper is worse if it regularly causes a restart or a missed interaction.
- Practice the failure points. Repeat difficult jumps, navigation sections and puzzles until you can perform them without searching. Do not spend practice time collecting optional items unless you want them for a separate goal.
- Start a fresh timed attempt. Use your own clock or split notes to monitor progress. The trophy requirement is completion in under two hours; do not assume that a personal timer is identical to a leaderboard timer.
- Protect the buffer. If a mistake happens, recover and continue when possible. A route aimed at 1:30 can absorb several minutes of errors and still remain below the trophy limit.
- Finish the game. The trophy is awarded for completing the game under the stated limit, not for reaching an intermediate chapter or collecting a particular number of items.
- Confirm the result. Check that the trophy has unlocked on the console. If it has not, review the attempt against the exact two-hour condition before assuming that a leaderboard rule or category issue is responsible.
Do not restart automatically after every small error. Restart only when the lost time or a dead end threatens your safety margin. The purpose of the first timed run is to finish reliably; optimization comes after you know where time is actually being lost.
How to turn the experience into an Any% run
1. Select the board before you time a serious attempt
Choose the completion category first: full-game Any% or 100%. For a fast completion without collection requirements, that normally means Any%. Then select the platform board—Current Gen, Last Gen or PC—and the ruleset, Glitchless or Unrestricted. Write all three choices at the top of your notes.
2. Read the live rules and endpoint
Category rules determine what techniques are legal and where the timer ends. The leaderboard’s rule-change notice says individual-level runs now end at the first checkpoint of a future chapter, which illustrates why an old guide can produce an incorrectly ended submission. Treat the live page as authoritative on the day you submit.

3. Build a route for that ruleset
A Glitchless route and an Unrestricted route may prioritize different movement choices. Do not practice an exploit-heavy route and then submit it to Glitchless, and do not compare its time with Glitchless times as though they were produced under the same conditions. Keep separate notes if you practice both.
4. Record the platform and run conditions
State the exact platform generation and category in your run notes. This makes later comparisons meaningful and helps you identify whether a time belongs on the Current Gen, Last Gen or PC board. If the submission page requests additional verification, follow its current instructions rather than relying on a general trophy video.
5. Submit only after checking the endpoint
Before uploading, confirm that the run begins and ends according to the selected category, uses only permitted techniques, and is attached to the correct platform board. A trophy unlock proves that the game was completed under two hours; it does not by itself prove compliance with Any% timing or glitch rules.
Choosing Glitchless or Unrestricted
| If your priority is… | Most suitable choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Unlocking I am Speed with the least administrative work | Trophy-focused attempt | The only stated condition is completion in less than two hours |
| Learning a clean route and building fundamentals | Glitchless Any% | The rules provide a defined restriction set and make practice easier to explain |
| Exploring the fastest techniques permitted by the leaderboard | Unrestricted Any% | The category allows a broader set of techniques than Glitchless |
| Comparing your time with friends | The same board and ruleset for everyone | Platform generation and glitch policy must match for the comparison to be meaningful |
| Collecting everything | 100% | Any% and the trophy do not require complete collection |
There is no universally correct choice. Glitchless can be easier to communicate and reproduce, while Unrestricted may be the better fit if your interest is technical route optimization. For a first-ever Stray speed challenge, however, the trophy route avoids forcing you to learn leaderboard terminology before you know the game.
Timing, splits and realistic goals
Use splits to find problems, not to create artificial pressure. After each practice run, record where you lost time: a puzzle search, a missed interaction, a wrong turn or a restart. Then practice that section in isolation. A stable 1:35 route is more useful for the trophy than an inconsistent 1:20 route that fails half the time.
| Goal | What to track | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|
| First completion | Whether you finish without getting stuck | You understand the complete chapter flow |
| Trophy attempt | Total elapsed time and major mistakes | Completion below two hours, ideally with substantial margin |
| Route improvement | Time lost at repeatable problem spots | Fewer pauses and cleaner transitions on the same platform |
| Leaderboard attempt | Category-compliant start, endpoint, platform and glitch policy | A run that can be compared only with the selected board |
The cited practical target of about 1:30 is valuable because it leaves roughly 30 minutes before the trophy limit. That is a coaching target for reliability, not an official cutoff beyond the two-hour requirement and not a claim about a competitive leaderboard pace.

Comparing unlike platforms
A PS5 result should not be presented as directly faster or slower than a PS4 or PC result without identifying the separate board. Put the platform generation beside every time you save or share.

Calling a trophy run “Any%” without a board
“I finished in 1:40” is a valid personal result. It becomes a leaderboard claim only when you identify the category, platform board, ruleset and current endpoint. Use “trophy run” when those details are not being followed.
Assuming every shortcut is Glitchless
Glitchless is a named ruleset, not a synonym for “I did not use a dramatic exploit.” If you plan to submit, check the category’s current definitions and classify the technique correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePracticing an outdated ending
The notice about individual-level runs ending at the first checkpoint of a future chapter shows that endpoints can be revised. Recheck the live rules before a submission, even if your route came from a highly viewed older guide.
Trying to collect everything during an Any% or trophy attempt
Optional collection adds time and can create detours. The trophy requires only a sub-two-hour completion, and Any% has no 100% collection requirement. Choose 100% only when complete collection is the actual objective.
Restarting too early
One missed turn does not automatically ruin a trophy attempt. If your target is around 1:30, the remaining buffer can absorb ordinary mistakes. Continue unless the error creates a dead end or destroys the margin you need.
Which challenge should you try first?
| Your situation | Recommended first challenge | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| You have never played Stray quickly | Untimed playthrough, then the trophy | Learn the route and aim for about 1:30 |
| You already know the game and want a public ranking | Any% on a named platform and ruleset | Read the live category rules and practice its endpoint |
| You enjoy technical exploits and route research | Unrestricted Any% | Keep the platform board fixed and document the techniques used |
| You want a repeatable, easy-to-explain category | Glitchless Any% | Follow the current Glitchless definitions exactly |
| You care about collecting every item or objective | 100% | Do not use an Any% or trophy time as your benchmark |
For most newcomers, the order is simple: learn Stray, complete a trophy-focused run with a large margin, then decide whether leaderboard competition is appealing. That sequence gives you route knowledge before you add platform categories, glitch definitions and submission rules.

How to describe your result accurately
Use a description that tells readers what the time represents. “PS5, trophy attempt, 1:34” communicates a personal sub-two-hour goal. “PC Any% Unrestricted, 1:34” communicates a leaderboard category, but only if the run follows the current PC Unrestricted rules and endpoint. “Stray speedrun, 1:34” leaves out information that determines whether the comparison is valid.
If you later submit a trophy-winning run, you may mention both achievements, but keep them conceptually separate: the trophy confirms the game was completed under two hours, while the leaderboard placement depends on the selected category’s rules and verification.
Bottom line for a first attempt
Start with the trophy if your main goal is a satisfying, achievable challenge. Play once to learn the chapter order, puzzles, movement lines and hub areas, then aim for roughly 1:30 so mistakes do not push you toward the two-hour limit. Move to Any% when you want a ranked objective. At that point, lock the platform board and glitch policy, read the live rules, and compare your time only with runs made under the same conditions.
