Stranger Than Heaven is not a new Like a Dragon sequel in disguise. It is RGG Studio’s upcoming historical action-adventure, built around a 50-year story, five periods of Japanese history and newly designed real-time combat. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is an already released, contemporary party RPG starring Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu, with turn-based Live Command battles and a large collection of activities.
The games may share RGG Studio’s cinematic storytelling, detailed urban spaces and dramatic character writing, but they answer different player needs. Choose Stranger Than Heaven if you want a fresh historical setting and physical action combat. Choose Infinite Wealth if you want a finished game, established continuity, turn-based party strategy, Japan and Hawaii, and a substantial minigame suite.

That table also explains why there is no single “better” choice. One game is a future purchase for players interested in a new historical action format; the other is a known, available RPG whose systems and cast are already established.

What Stranger Than Heaven is trying to be
A separate historical adventure
SEGA describes Stranger Than Heaven as a story spanning 50 years and five eras: 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965. The game moves through five Japanese cities as those periods change. This is a much wider historical distance than the contemporary crime and personal dramas normally associated with Like a Dragon.
The time jumps are not a cosmetic backdrop. Moving between those dates gives the game a different narrative foundation: institutions, streets, technology, social expectations and the meaning of public life all change from one era to the next. The available announcements emphasize that era-spanning story, the cities, physical combat and show-business elements. They do not present the project as a retelling of Ichiban Kasuga’s journey or as another chapter in the numbered Like a Dragon role-playing series.
A new identity inside the RGG Studio family
Developer comments specifically explain why the project is not being called a Like a Dragon title. That distinction matters when setting expectations. Shared authorship can create a family resemblance in cinematic pacing, detailed neighborhoods and sudden shifts between serious drama and eccentric situations, but it does not make every RGG Studio game use the same combat or continuity.
For a returning fan, the useful assumption is “similar sensibility, different framework.” You should not buy Stranger Than Heaven expecting Ichiban’s party, Kiryu’s established arc or a direct continuation of the modern series. The announced premise instead centers on a new historical adventure and a fresh protagonist.
What Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is trying to be
An available mainline RPG
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth launched on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation, Xbox, Windows and Steam. It is part of the established Like a Dragon/Yakuza continuity and follows Ichiban Kasuga while also featuring Kazuma Kiryu. Its story travels between contemporary Japan and Hawaii, including Yokohama and Hawaiian locations.
Because it is already released, the buying question is practical as well as stylistic: you can start the complete game now rather than deciding whether to reserve an upcoming title. SEGA reported that one million units shipped and sold in the first seven days. That is a publisher-reported commercial figure, not an independent sales estimate, but it confirms the scale of the launch.
A party-focused role-playing structure
The game uses the Live Command RPG Battle system. Battles are turn-based, and the player chooses actions for a party while considering positioning and the timing of attacks, support abilities and other commands. The result is deliberately different from direct, moment-to-moment brawling: you plan a sequence, select commands and watch the party execute them rather than steering every punch in real time.

Its large activity layer is part of the package, not an incidental extra. Official materials call out karaoke, darts, golf, batting-cage baseball, Mahjong, arcade recreations, Dondoko Island and Crazy Delivery. Those activities help define Infinite Wealth as a broad role-playing holiday through several locations, with diversions that can occupy players between major story sections.
Combat: physical action versus turn-based decisions
How Stranger Than Heaven handles a fight
Stranger Than Heaven is built around newly designed physical action combat. The documented mechanics include blocking, grappling, stamina recovery and close-quarters exchanges. That combination points to a combat loop in which defensive timing and physical distance matter as much as choosing an attack.
Xbox Wire’s hands-on report describes a knocked-down character fending off attacks until stamina recovers. That example is useful because it shows the intended pressure: being overwhelmed is not simply a prompt to select the next menu command. You have to survive the exchange, manage your endurance and regain the ability to respond. Blocking and grappling likewise suggest that contact, interruption and positioning are central to the feel of a fight.
Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto explained the motivation in a statement reproduced by GamesRadar: “Frankly speaking, with Yakuza, you could even play it with closed eyes”. In context, the remark describes why the new project aims for a more demanding and tactile combat experience. It does not mean every Like a Dragon battle is trivial; it means the team wanted Stranger Than Heaven to require more direct physical attention.
How Infinite Wealth handles a fight
Infinite Wealth asks a different question: which party member should act, which ability is appropriate and how should characters be positioned for the next turn? Its Live Command battles are turn-based, so the player can evaluate the battlefield and make a deliberate plan rather than relying on reflexes and stamina management.
That system suits players who enjoy RPG decision-making, party composition and the rhythm of preparing a response before committing to it. The presence of Ichiban and Kiryu also gives the combat a continuity that Stranger Than Heaven intentionally does not pursue.
Which combat system is the better fit?
- Choose Stranger Than Heaven’s approach if you want blocking, grappling, stamina recovery and close-range exchanges to shape every encounter.
- Choose Infinite Wealth’s approach if you prefer turn-based commands, party roles and positioning over direct control of each strike.
- Do not treat them as two difficulty settings for the same formula. They are different genres of interaction: one emphasizes physical execution, while the other emphasizes tactical selection.
Setting and atmosphere: five historical eras versus a modern trip
Stranger Than Heaven’s 1915–1965 span
The announced dates—1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965—cover five distinct moments in modern Japanese history. The story therefore has room to show characters and cities across decades rather than keeping one cast in a single contemporary snapshot. Five cities are included, giving the project a geographic range as well as a chronological one.

This structure should appeal to players who want the setting itself to be a major subject. A street, business or performance venue can carry different meanings as the decades change. The official material also highlights show-business elements, adding another thread to the historical and urban focus.

Infinite Wealth stays in the present day and moves between Japan and Hawaii. Yokohama connects it to the modern Japanese side of the series, while Hawaii changes the visual and social context without leaving the contemporary timeline.
That travel structure supports the game’s activity-heavy design. Karaoke, golf, batting cages, arcades and other diversions make sense as part of a modern vacation-like journey. If you want to explore a recognizable present-day world with Ichiban and Kiryu, Infinite Wealth is the direct match; if you want historical change across half a century, Stranger Than Heaven is the more distinctive proposition.
Continuity, characters and what you should know before starting
Infinite Wealth rewards continuity
Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu are named leads in Infinite Wealth, and the game sits in the established Like a Dragon/Yakuza storyline. Players who follow those characters or want the context of a long-running series have a clear reason to choose it.
That does not make prior knowledge the only way to enjoy the game, but it does make the purchase a continuation choice. You are entering an existing world with known characters, relationships and history rather than meeting a completely separate cast.

Stranger Than Heaven starts a separate conversation
The developer’s explanation that Stranger Than Heaven is not a Like a Dragon entry is the key continuity fact. It has a new identity, a fresh protagonist and a historical premise. Nothing in the announced material says that it continues Ichiban’s or Kiryu’s story.
For newcomers, that separation can be an advantage: you can approach the project as a new RGG Studio narrative without first working through the modern series. For longtime fans, it means the appeal must come from the setting, presentation and combat rather than from a promised continuation of familiar character arcs.

SEGA’s official materials specifically identify a wide range of optional activities:
- Karaoke and darts
- Golf and batting-cage baseball
- Mahjong
- Arcade recreations
- Dondoko Island
- Crazy Delivery
These are not interchangeable labels for generic filler. They represent several kinds of play—score chasing, sports activities, a board-game-style pastime, arcade games and named side modes. If a major reason you enjoy Like a Dragon is taking a break from the main plot to pursue unusual diversions, Infinite Wealth has a documented package built around that habit.
What is and is not confirmed for Stranger Than Heaven
The official announcements for Stranger Than Heaven emphasize the 50-year story, five cities, physical combat and show-business elements. They do not present the same named minigame list as Infinite Wealth. That does not prove the upcoming game will have no optional activities; it means a matching catalogue of karaoke, Dondoko Island, Crazy Delivery and the other Infinite Wealth diversions has not been established in the available announcements.
Therefore, buy Stranger Than Heaven for its announced historical and action design, not on the assumption that it will reproduce Infinite Wealth’s side-content structure.

Stranger Than Heaven: wait for January 15, 2027
SEGA and the Like a Dragon Web Portal list January 15, 2027 as the release date. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass.
Because the game is upcoming, details beyond the announced premise and systems can still change before launch. A purchase decision today is consequently a choice to reserve or plan for a future action-adventure, not a choice to begin playing immediately.
Infinite Wealth: available now
Infinite Wealth launched January 26, 2024 on PlayStation, Xbox, Windows and Steam. It is the practical option if you want to install a finished release now, experience the current Like a Dragon continuity and explore its full modern Japan-and-Hawaii structure.

The platform lists are not identical. Players should check the edition and storefront available on their own hardware, especially if they are comparing Xbox console play with Xbox on PC, Steam or cloud access for the upcoming title.
Which game should you buy?
Pick Stranger Than Heaven if…
- You want an RGG Studio story that is separate from the Like a Dragon numbering and continuity.
- A setting spanning 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965 is more appealing than a contemporary adventure.

If you are deciding only by story setting
Choose the historical game for a 50-year Japanese timeline and five cities. Choose Infinite Wealth for a contemporary journey between Japan and Hawaii with established protagonists. The settings are not variations on one location; they define the identity of each game.

Common misconceptions to avoid
“It is made by RGG Studio, so it must be Like a Dragon.”
RGG Studio is the common creator, not a guarantee of identical mechanics or continuity. The developer describes Stranger Than Heaven as a separate historical action-adventure, while Infinite Wealth is a mainline RPG in the established series.
“Stranger Than Heaven is the next numbered sequel.”
That is not how the project has been positioned. Treat it as a new property with its own protagonist and premise rather than as a continuation of Infinite Wealth.
“Both games use the same kind of combat.”

Stranger Than Heaven and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth share a developer’s dramatic, city-focused sensibility, but they are aimed at different kinds of players. Stranger Than Heaven is the forward-looking choice: a new historical adventure across five eras and cities, with real-time combat designed around physical exchanges and stamina. Infinite Wealth is the immediately playable choice: a modern Japan-and-Hawaii RPG with Ichiban, Kiryu, turn-based party battles and an unusually broad activity list.
If your deciding question is “Which one feels more like a traditional RPG I can play today?”, choose Infinite Wealth. If it is “Which one offers a genuinely new setting and a more tactile combat direction from RGG Studio?”, wait for Stranger Than Heaven.
