Your first day in Stranded Deep should be about making one island safe and dependable, not crossing the Pacific. Paddle the starting life raft to shore, secure it, gather sticks, rocks and leaves, craft a knife, axe and spear, then build a shelter, water still and fire. Save before nightfall, keep replacement leaves beside the still, and postpone shipwreck dives, long swims and a large raft until your basic camp can support you.
What you are trying to accomplish before the first night
Stranded Deep begins after a plane crash leaves you in the Pacific. The game expects you to balance health, hunger, thirst, sunstroke and exposure while you build, craft, hunt, fish, explore and eventually look for a way out. The first day is therefore a setup exercise: create a repeatable source of water, a place to sleep and save, a modest food supply, and enough tools to gather more materials tomorrow.

Do not measure success by how much of the island you have explored. A good first day ends with a visible camp, a charged water still, a fire, and the tools needed to replace anything you lose. Those systems remove the most dangerous forms of early dependence on random scavenging.
1. Reach land and secure the starting raft
Paddle to the nearest practical island
Use the paddle in the starting life raft to reach an island. Stay close to the beach while learning movement and interaction controls; there is no reason to make a long swim on your first attempt. Choose a landing area where you can see the shoreline clearly and where sticks, rocks and vegetation are easy to collect.

Pull the raft above the waterline
Once you reach shore, drag the life raft onto land. If you leave it floating, waves or movement can carry it away and remove your easiest transport option. Put it where you can recognize it from the beach, but leave enough room nearby for a shelter, fire and water still. The raft is already sufficient for reaching the first island, so replacing it is not a first-day requirement.
Stay on one island while learning
Resist the urge to swim immediately to another island. Deep water can contain dangerous wildlife, and night makes navigation and recovery harder. Spend daylight learning how the inventory and crafting menu behave on land you can return to safely.
2. Gather the materials that unlock your camp
Make one collection loop around the beach
Walk the island perimeter and pick up loose sticks, rocks, fibrous leaves or palm fronds, cloth and coconuts whenever they are safely accessible. The early bottleneck is not a rare component; it is having enough ordinary material for tools, shelter, fire and water production at the same time.
- Sticks: keep them for tools, shelter and fire construction.
- Rocks: collect several while you are already walking the shoreline.
- Fibrous leaves or palm fronds: reserve a dependable stack for the water still and gather replacements before the first stack runs out.
- Cloth: take any piece you can reach safely; it is useful for early crafting.
- Coconuts: collect reachable ones for food and hydration options, but do not climb or wander into danger just to obtain them.
Keep the beach and your future shelter in sight during this first sweep. A small, known area is more valuable than a larger pile of supplies that you cannot find again after dark.
3. Craft the three basic tools first
Crude knife
Craft a crude knife as your processing tool. It is used to work with gathered materials and helps turn raw resources into items needed by later recipes.
Crude axe
Craft a crude axe for harvesting. Use it to obtain more of the materials that will keep your shelter, fire and water systems supplied.
Crude spear
Craft a crude spear for a basic weapon and for small animals or fish. It gives you a way to obtain food without committing to a dangerous hunt.

The crafting menu is context-sensitive: it uses items near you and items in your inventory, and it displays the requirements for the recipe you select. Recipe quantities can change with game updates, so treat the counts shown in your current game as authoritative rather than relying on an old list. If a recipe is unavailable, move the required items closer, check that you have the right tool or material, and read the menu entry again.
4. Build a shelter that doubles as your save point
Place it above the high-tide line
A shelter is an early survival milestone because it lets you sleep and save progress. Place it on dry ground above the high-tide line, not directly at the edge of the water. You want a location that remains visible from the beach and is close to your resource collection area.
Use a recognizable camp layout
Put the shelter where its shape is easy to spot when you return from gathering. Leave a clear path between the shelter, fire and water still. A simple layout prevents night-time searching and makes it obvious which supplies are being consumed by which system.
Save before taking risks
Once the shelter is complete, use it to save before exploring, swimming or diving. Saving is not merely an end-of-day ritual: do it after an important construction milestone and before any activity that could strand you in the water or leave you without tools.

Build the Water Still as soon as practical
The Water Still is the first dependable water system you should construct. It produces drinkable water, can collect rain, and uses fibrous leaves or palm fronds as charges. Build it near the shelter but not in the way of the fire or your main walking route.
Maintain a leaf reserve
A still is not self-sustaining just because it is built. Keep a visible pile of replacement fibrous leaves or palm fronds beside it, and collect more whenever you make a gathering trip. If the still runs out of charges, thirst becomes the limiting need even when the structure itself is intact.
Plan for weather and timing
Rain can add water to the still, but you should not plan your first-day survival around a particular weather event. Charge it with leaves, check its status before leaving camp, and drink from it before setting out for a long trip.

6. Make fire and a manageable food supply
Start with a campfire
Craft a campfire after shelter and water are underway. Place it where you can reach it from the shelter without blocking the water still. A fire gives you a controlled place to prepare food and makes the camp easier to identify at night.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAdd cooking capacity when materials allow
When you have enough resources, add a cooking or smoking attachment. Do not delay the shelter or still while chasing every possible fire upgrade; the first objective is a working heat source and one safe meal.
Use low-risk food first
Starter rations, coconuts, fish and small-game meat can cover early hunger. Use the food that is already available rather than spending the whole day pursuing a large animal. Fish and small game are appropriate targets for the crude spear; dangerous wildlife is not a sensible first-day objective.
Cook what you need, then return to camp and check your water supply. Food solves only hunger; it does not replace the still, and a full stomach does not protect you from sunstroke or an unsafe swim.
7. Control sun exposure, health and travel risk
Work in short loops
Move between the beach, resource patches and camp in short, repeatable loops. This keeps you oriented and limits the time you spend exposed while carrying supplies. If your condition worsens, return to shelter instead of pushing farther for one more resource.

Night reduces visibility. Use daylight for shoreline collection, fishing and any trip that requires you to identify a reef, wreck or neighboring island. At night, stay near the camp, organize materials and save.
Do not turn a resource shortage into a rescue problem
Long swims, shipwreck dives and crossings between islands can separate you from the raft and shelter. Attempt them only after you have saved, have a reliable food and water routine, and can replace the tools you carry. A single lost spear is inconvenient; losing the raft or becoming unable to locate camp can end the day.

8. A practical first-day schedule
| Part of the day | Action | Why it comes first |
|---|---|---|
| Landing | Paddle to shore and pull the life raft onto land. | Preserves transport and gives you a fixed starting reference. |
| First collection loop | Gather sticks, rocks, leaves or fronds, cloth and reachable coconuts. | Provides the common materials shared by tools, shelter, fire and water. |
| Tool phase | Craft a crude knife, crude axe and crude spear. | Unlocks processing, harvesting and low-risk food gathering. |
| Camp phase | Build a shelter above the high-tide line and save. | Creates a sleep and save location that you can find again. |
| Water phase | Build and charge a Water Still; store spare leaves beside it. | Prevents thirst from becoming the first unavoidable crisis. |
| Food phase | Make a campfire, add cooking or smoking capacity if possible, and prepare available food. | Supplies hunger without requiring a dangerous hunt. |
| Nightfall | Return to camp, check the still, organize tools and save. | Protects progress when visibility and navigation deteriorate. |
9. Choose a camp site you can live with
The game does not require a single perfect base location. Use these practical criteria when deciding whether to keep your first camp or move later:
- Water access: you should be able to reach the still quickly and gather replacement leaves nearby.
- Resource distance: sticks, rocks, cloth and coconuts should be obtainable without a long detour.
- Visibility: the shelter and raft should be recognizable from the beach and from the direction you normally approach.
- Wildlife safety: avoid making deep water or a dangerous animal route part of your daily supply run.
- Future launch space: leave a clear shoreline area if you expect to build and launch a larger raft later.
These are strategy guidelines, not developer-imposed rules. A less scenic island with nearby leaves and an obvious shoreline is usually a better first base than a resource-rich site that is hard to navigate.

10. Why the larger raft can wait
A custom raft is a later mobility project. It needs a buoyant base, a floor and propulsion before it becomes useful for moving between islands. Those components matter, but they do not solve first-day thirst, hunger or saving.
Keep the starting life raft until your shelter, still, fire and tools are working. Begin the custom raft when you can gather its parts without stripping the camp of fuel or water supplies, and when you have a saved position to return to if construction or a launch goes wrong.
11. What to postpone until the second day
- Shipwreck dives that require long swims or leave you far from camp.
- Extended crossings to another island before you know how to return.
- Hunting dangerous wildlife for food you can obtain more safely.
- Large construction projects that consume the leaves, sticks or rocks needed by your still and fire.
- Exploration after dark, when landmarks and the shoreline are difficult to identify.
Postponing these activities is not wasted time. It converts the next expedition from an emergency trip into a planned run with a saved camp, known supplies and a way home.
12. First-day troubleshooting
The raft drifted away
Search the immediate shoreline and the water near your landing point before making a long swim. If it cannot be recovered safely, stabilize the island camp first rather than attempting a blind crossing.
The crafting recipe is missing
Open the current in-game crafting entry, move nearby materials into a clear pile, and verify that you have the required item type. Older community guides may list different quantities after updates; the menu in your edition takes priority.
Best Value
The still is not producing water
Check whether it has fibrous leaves or palm fronds available as charges. Gather replacements and keep them beside the structure. Rain can contribute, but it is not a substitute for maintaining the still.
You cannot find camp
Return toward the shoreline, use the raft as a landmark and approach from the beach rather than cutting across unfamiliar vegetation. On the next daylight cycle, move the shelter to a more visible position if necessary.
You are running low on health or water
Stop gathering, return to the shelter and use the supplies already prepared. Do not respond to a shortage by swimming farther or diving at night; those choices increase the number of problems at once.

The full release of Stranded Deep is dated 10 August 2022 on Steam. The listing identifies Beam Team Games as developer and Beam Team Publishing as publisher, with support for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux. It lists single-player and online or split-screen co-op. In every mode, the first-day priorities remain the same: establish water, shelter and a controllable food routine before expanding.
Once those basics are dependable, you can spend daylight on fishing, hunting, farming, wreck exploration, raft construction and travel between islands. The same camp criteria continue to matter: supplies must be replaceable, the shelter must be findable, and the route to water must be safer than the activity it enables.
First-day checklist
- Reach an island with the starting paddle.
- Pull the life raft onto shore and leave it visible.
- Collect sticks, rocks, fibrous leaves or palm fronds, cloth and safe-to-reach coconuts.
- Craft a crude knife, crude axe and crude spear.
- Build a shelter above the high-tide line.
- Save at the shelter.
- Build and charge a Water Still.
- Store replacement leaves beside the still.
- Build a campfire and prepare safe food.
- Return to camp before night, organize tools and save again.
If those boxes are checked, your first day has done its job: tomorrow begins with a functioning base instead of another scramble for survival.
