How the two tools organize component work
Storybook describes itself as a workshop for building UI components and pages in isolation. A component can have multiple stories, each showing a different state. This makes stories the organizing unit for exploring and developing states such as default, loading, disabled, or error. React Styleguidist discovers React components and presents documentation and examples in a generated style guide. Its Markdown-based examples can include interactive JavaScript or JSX playgrounds. Choose Storybook when
- Your day-to-day work is building and reviewing isolated component or page states.
- You want stories to connect the development workflow with documentation and UI-testing starting points.
- Your framework and project structure have a documented Storybook setup path that you can validate in the repository.
Evaluate Styleguidist when
- You primarily need a React component catalog that teammates can browse as a style guide.
- Your team prefers Markdown examples and interactive snippets maintained alongside component docs.
- You want generated API documentation based on source comments, PropTypes, Readme files, or supported Flow and TypeScript annotations.

Prototype against your real repository before committing
Setup friction depends on the framework, bundler, aliases, stylesheets, component layout, and existing build configuration. A short proof of concept with representative components is more informative than choosing from feature descriptions alone.

Check Styleguidist installation and commands
- Install
react-styleguidistas a development dependency using the package manager used by your project. The official guide says to install webpack if the project does not already have it and is not using Create React App; Create React App users can skip that webpack installation step. - Start the development server with
npx styleguidist server. - Generate a production build with
npx styleguidist build. - Test a real component that uses your normal CSS, aliases, and complex states, then check whether its examples and generated props documentation are accurate.

Check component discovery and configuration
Styleguidist’s default component search pattern is src/components/**/*.{js,jsx,ts,tsx}. It ignores __tests__ directories and files named as tests or specs by default. If your components live elsewhere, configure the component patterns to match your repository. The documentation cautions that multiple named component exports in one module can behave unreliably, so include such modules in your prototype if your project uses them. Verify webpack compatibility
Styleguidist can reuse a project’s webpack configuration, but its developer guide documents restrictions: some fields and plugins are ignored because they are already included, irrelevant, or could disrupt the guide. The guide also describes loaders for components, props documentation, and examples, as well as hot reload. How to make the decision
- Pick two or three representative components, including one with multiple meaningful states and one with nontrivial styling or dependencies.
- Build the same examples in each candidate tool. Compare how much authored material is required and whether teammates can find the states or usage guidance they need.
- Check generated documentation against the component’s actual API, including any comments, prop types, or TypeScript and Flow annotations your team relies on.
- Run the setup in the repository rather than a clean demo project. Record configuration changes, missing components, styling mismatches, and any unsupported assumptions.
- Ask the people who will maintain the examples which authoring format they can keep current. A tool’s catalog is only useful if its examples and documentation stay accurate.
The available official documentation does not settle comparative maintenance health, migration time, performance, or total cost of ownership. Do not treat a feature list as evidence of those outcomes; measure what matters in your own project.
