For most family bathrooms, a storage geyser is the better default when several people shower one after another, more than one outlet may run, the electrical supply is limited, or off-peak electricity is available. An instant geyser is usually the better fit when space is tight, hot-water use is brief or intermittent, and the home can provide its high electrical load and the required inlet flow.
An instant unit can run a shower, but only when its rated flow at your required temperature rise matches the shower demand and the wiring, breaker, voltage, and service capacity are suitable. Storage avoids that large instantaneous load, but it occupies more space, loses some heat while standing, and eventually runs out until the tank recovers.

Storage and instant geysers solve different bathroom problems
A storage, or tank, geyser heats potable water in a thermostatically controlled vessel and keeps that volume hot until a tap or shower uses it. The tank acts as a buffer: water is available at a predictable rate even when the electrical element cannot heat the full shower flow instantly. Its limits are tank capacity, recovery time, heat lost through the stored water and pipework, and the physical and structural space needed for the vessel.
Recommended Free Tools
An instant, tankless, or continuous-flow geyser heats water as it passes through the appliance. There is little or no stored hot water, so there is no tank warm-up period or tank standby loss. Output is governed by the incoming-water temperature, the flow rate, the desired outlet temperature, and the heater’s electrical power. If the requested flow exceeds the unit’s rating, outlet temperature falls or the controller reduces flow.

ENERGY STAR and AHRI describe tankless performance using flow (GPM) and temperature rise, while storage products are commonly compared with capacity and first-hour rating. Those are different measures; a tank’s first-hour rating cannot be compared directly with a tankless GPM figure unless the demand profile and temperature rise are matched.
Quick comparison for a bathroom
| Factor | Storage geyser | Instant geyser |
|---|---|---|
| Shower readiness | Water is ready after the tank has heated; a depleted tank needs recovery time. | Heats on demand, so there is no tank warm-up, but the unit needs its minimum flow and sufficient power before it will deliver hot water. |
| Sequential showers | Works well until the stored volume is used; recovery speed determines the wait afterward. | Can continue for successive showers if the electrical supply and flow rating support each shower. |
| Several fixtures together | The tank buffers demand until its hot-water volume is depleted. | Must meet the combined flow of the outlets. When demand exceeds the rating, temperature falls, as AHRI explains. |
| Electrical service | Lower, slower electrical demand is normally easier to accommodate. | High instantaneous demand may require larger conductors, a larger breaker, a service upgrade, or three-phase power. |
| Space and structure | Larger and heavier; needs clearance, a suitable mounting surface, and structural support. | Compact and light compared with a tank, but the installation may need larger cables and an upgraded supply. |
| Energy behavior | Has standby and distribution heat losses, but can take advantage of off-peak tariffs or scheduled heating. | Avoids tank standby loss, yet its high power draw can cost more under some tariffs and operating patterns. |
| Temperature stability | Usually stable while hot water remains and the mixing or tempering controls are correctly set. | Stable only within the unit’s flow and temperature-rise range; rapid flow changes or an undersized model can cause fluctuations. |
| Purchase and installation | The tank can cost more in space, mounting, valves, and structural work. | The appliance is compact, but heavy-gauge wiring, protection, and an electrical upgrade can dominate installation cost. |
| Best fit | Families, several outlets, limited electrical capacity, or off-peak electricity. | Small or intermittent use, limited space, and a high-capacity electrical supply. |
Which uses less electricity?
There is no single answer for every bathroom because efficiency and the electricity bill are different questions. A tank loses some heat while it sits full, so an instant model can avoid that standby loss. However, an instant heater concentrates a large amount of power into the few minutes when water is flowing. The bill also depends on tariff, shower duration, incoming-water temperature, pipe length, and how often hot water is used.
Australian Government YourHome guidance states that electric instantaneous systems are about 20–30% more efficient than electric storage systems. The same guidance warns that electric instantaneous units can draw up to 28 kW, may need a three-phase supply, and that single-phase models can provide very limited shower flow. Treat the percentage as guidance for the conditions considered by that source, not as a guaranteed saving on your tariff.
A U.S. Department of Energy Building America measure guide gives a more conservative comparison: at best, an electric tankless heater could save about 12% in energy costs over an electric tank-type unit. Actual results vary with usage, tariff, inlet temperature, and distribution losses. The two figures are not contradictory promises; they come from different assumptions and measures.

For storage, ask whether the tank can be heated during a cheaper tariff period or when surplus solar electricity is available. For instant, ask whether the tariff penalizes high peak demand and whether the electrical upgrade required to operate the unit offsets the running-cost benefit. Compare the total installed cost and annual use, not just the element’s nameplate efficiency.
Can an instant geyser run a shower?
Yes, provided all four conditions are met:
- The unit’s rated flow at your required temperature rise is at least the shower’s actual flow.
- The inlet supply reaches the manufacturer’s minimum flow and pressure.
- The home’s voltage, phase, breaker, cable size, isolator, and service capacity match the appliance requirements.
- The installation complies with local wet-area, earthing, residual-current, plumbing, and temperature-control rules.
Temperature rise is the difference between incoming cold-water temperature and the shower temperature. Colder inlet water or a higher setpoint requires more power for the same flow. A model that performs well in a warm climate may deliver less flow in winter or in a colder region. A single-phase model may technically heat water yet still provide an unsatisfactory shower if its available power limits the flow.
How to size either type for your bathroom
1. Measure the demand that can occur together
List every outlet that could be open during the busiest period: showers, basins, a bath filler, kitchen taps, dishwasher, or washing machine. Measure each outlet’s flow if possible, then decide which outlets genuinely run at the same time. Add the simultaneous flows rather than adding every outlet in the home.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Select a storage tank by usable hot-water demand
Use the household’s peak sequence of showers and other hot-water use, not simply the number of bedrooms. Check the manufacturer’s capacity and first-hour rating, which describe how much hot water the system can supply over a defined period with recovery. Leave enough margin for colder inlet water and a longer-than-usual shower. A tank that is too small will run cold; an oversized tank costs more, occupies more space, and may have greater standing losses.

3. Select an instant model by flow at temperature rise
Use the combined flow calculated in step one and the required outlet temperature. Read the performance table at that temperature rise; do not rely on a headline maximum GPM measured under different conditions. Confirm both the unit’s minimum activation flow and its maximum flow. If the showerhead is low-flow, verify that the heater can still detect and maintain the reduced flow.
4. Check the supply before ordering
Ask a licensed electrician to confirm available voltage and phase, main-service capacity, circuit rating, conductor size, isolator requirements, earthing, and residual-current protection. An instant unit that fits the plumbing but overloads the service is not a workable choice. Conversely, a storage unit may fit an existing circuit but require a suitable support base and pressure-relief discharge arrangement.
5. Account for distribution losses
A bathroom far from the heater can waste water and heat while the pipe run warms. Insulating accessible hot-water pipes can reduce that loss. ENERGY STAR also identifies point-of-use heaters as an option for a single remote, low-demand basin; compare that arrangement with insulating or shortening the pipe run before adding a second whole-home heater.

Product certification and licensed work
Singapore’s regulator treats both instantaneous and storage electric water heaters as controlled goods. Products should carry the SAFETY Mark and be installed by a licensed electrical worker. Other countries use different approval marks and licensing systems; verify the mark recognized where the heater will be installed.
Residual-current protection in wet areas
RCD or GFCI protection is common in wet-area rules, but the device type, rating, test requirements, and installation zones are local-code questions. Hong Kong EMSD guidance, for example, requires RCD protection for electric heaters installed at or below 2.25 m in a bathroom and sets restrictions on shower-storage outlet valves. That 2.25 m rule and its valve restrictions should not be generalized to another country.
Scald prevention
Set the heater and mixing controls so the delivery temperature is safe at personal-hygiene fixtures. NSW Building Commission requirements limit delivery to not more than 50°C in ordinary cases and 45°C in specified care, disability, health-care, and school settings, using a compliant tempering or thermostatic device. Your jurisdiction may specify a different temperature, location, or device.
Installation checks
- Confirm protective earthing and bonding.
- Provide the required isolation switch and accessible shut-off controls.
- Fit the manufacturer’s pressure-relief or safety valve and route its discharge safely.
- Use approved pipework, waterproofing, supports, and clearances.
- Keep the tank on a surface rated for its full operating weight.
- Verify the instant unit’s minimum inlet flow and pressure.
- Keep electrical connections outside prohibited wet zones and protect them as local code requires.
- Test the RCD/GFCI, temperature control, leaks, and discharge path before handover.
A practical decision process
- Write down the peak demand. Record the number of showers and other outlets that may run together and their measured flow.
- Check the electrical service. If the home cannot supply the instant heater’s voltage, phase, breaker, and cable requirements without an impractical upgrade, remove instant models from the shortlist.
- Check the available space. Measure tank clearance, access for replacement, mounting strength, and the route for safety-valve discharge. For an instant unit, measure the compact appliance location and the cable route.
- Compare operating patterns. Frequent sequential showers favor stored volume; short, occasional use favors on-demand heating. Include off-peak or solar availability in the calculation.
- Match the capacity metric. Compare a storage first-hour rating with your peak sequence and an instant rating with combined GPM at the desired temperature rise. Never substitute one metric for the other.
- Price the complete installation. Include tank support and valves or, for instant, larger conductors, protection, and a possible service upgrade.
- Verify local compliance. Confirm certification, wet-area zones, RCD/GFCI, earthing, pressure relief, tempering, and inspection requirements before purchase.
- Have the licensed installer commission it. Record the setpoint, protection test, and any maintenance instructions for the household.
Which type fits common bathroom situations?
Several family members shower in sequence
Storage is generally the lower-risk match when the electrical service is modest. Choose enough capacity and first-hour output for the peak sequence, and accept that a depleted tank needs recovery. An instant system can work only if its flow rating and electrical service support the shower without unacceptable flow reduction.

One occupant uses a bathroom intermittently
Instant may make sense where space is scarce and the supply can handle the load. Confirm that the unit activates reliably at the chosen showerhead flow and that cold-season inlet temperatures do not reduce output below an acceptable level.
Two fixtures may run at once
Storage provides a finite buffer, while instant must meet the combined flow continuously. If the instant unit is sized for one shower, opening a second outlet can make both outlets cooler. A larger whole-house unit may solve that problem but can increase electrical-infrastructure cost.
A remote basin is the only distant outlet
Keep the main heater sized for the household and reduce the remote run’s waste with pipe insulation. For a single low-demand basin, a compliant point-of-use heater may be considered, as ENERGY STAR notes, but it still requires local electrical and wet-area approval.

Storage can heat water during the cheaper or surplus-generation period and hold it for later use. Instant avoids storing heat but cannot shift its demand away from the moment the tap opens. Compare the tariff structure and solar-control equipment rather than assuming one technology is always cheaper.
Maintenance and performance checks
For either type, keep the inlet and outlet plumbing accessible, watch for leaks, and follow the manufacturer’s inspection schedule. A storage installation should have its safety valve and discharge path checked and the tank inspected for scale or corrosion where local water conditions make those issues likely. An instant installation should have its inlet filter, flow sensor, electrical connections, and safety cut-outs checked according to the product instructions. Do not bypass a thermal cut-out, pressure valve, RCD/GFCI, or other protective device to cure a nuisance trip.
If hot water is inconsistent, first compare actual demand with the unit’s rated capacity, then check inlet temperature, flow, filters, valves, and the temperature-control device. A change in showerhead, household water pressure, or simultaneous appliance use can move a previously adequate system outside its design range.
Troubleshooting guide
| Symptom | Likely cause to investigate | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Instant shower turns cool when another tap opens | Combined flow exceeds the heater’s rating or the inlet pressure falls. | Reduce simultaneous flow, measure demand, and have the installer verify the rated GPM and pressure. |
| Instant heater does not start at a low-flow shower | Flow is below the manufacturer’s activation threshold. | Check the filter and shower flow, then use a compatible control or have the installer reassess the unit. |
| Storage water runs out before the last shower | Tank capacity or first-hour output is below the peak sequence, or recovery is delayed. | Stagger use, review the first-hour rating, and obtain a sizing assessment before replacing the tank. |
| Breaker or RCD/GFCI trips | Overload, wiring fault, moisture, or a failing appliance may be present. | Switch off the heater and call a licensed electrician; never repeatedly reset or bypass protection. |
| Water is dangerously hot | Incorrect setpoint, failed tempering control, or faulty sensor. | Stop using the outlet and have temperature-control and scald protection tested. |
| Long wait at a distant tap | Water in the pipe has cooled between uses. | Insulate the hot-water pipe, reduce the run where feasible, or evaluate a compliant point-of-use option. |
What to ask an installer before buying
- What is the measured peak flow and temperature rise for this bathroom?
- Can the existing service supply the proposed instant unit continuously, including other household loads?
- What circuit, conductor, isolator, RCD/GFCI, and earthing work is required?
- Where will a storage tank be supported, and how will the safety-valve discharge be routed?
- Which certification mark and inspection process apply in this jurisdiction?
- What tempering or thermostatic device is required to meet the local delivery-temperature limit?
- What maintenance, filter cleaning, valve testing, and replacement access does the model require?
- What happens to shower flow on the coldest expected inlet-water day?
Bottom line
Choose storage when dependable hot water for several people matters more than compactness and when the electrical service or tariff favors gradual heating. Choose instant when the bathroom has intermittent demand, very little space, and a confirmed high-capacity electrical supply. In either case, size from real simultaneous demand, temperature rise, and local code—not from the appliance label alone.
