You can build a browser app that reads your posture from a webcam using MediaPipe Pose Landmarker and turns the geometry of your upper body into adjustable reminders. The pose model runs in the browser, and Google states that MediaPipe processes input on-device. What the app produces is a posture-awareness cue based on landmark positions, not a diagnosis, and not a verdict on whether your posture is “good.”

What the prototype does and does not do

The app watches a webcam feed, locates body landmarks on each frame, computes a few angles and offsets from those landmarks, and shows a gentle reminder when the values stay outside a threshold you have chosen. It is a tool for noticing drift during a work session. It is not a clinical instrument and cannot detect pain, injury, or health risk.

  • Landmarks are geometric observations. A landmark is an estimated point on the body in the image. Turning those points into a posture label is an implementation choice you make, and it is not validated by the MediaPipe documentation.
  • There is no universal ideal posture. Workplace safety guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says there is no single “correct” posture or arrangement of components that will fit everyone. Your thresholds should be user-adjustable for that reason.
  • Performance depends on your hardware. The official guidance does not establish frame rates or results across devices. You need to measure the finished app on the machines you intend to support.

What MediaPipe Pose Landmarker returns

The Pose Landmarker task, as described in Google’s current documentation (Google AI Edge), accepts three kinds of input: still images, decoded video frames, and a live video feed. For each detection it returns:

  • Normalized image landmarks. Coordinates expressed relative to the image dimensions, so they are not pixel positions until you multiply by the width and height of the frame.
  • 3D world landmarks. Coordinates in a real-world-scaled space centred on the body. These are usually more convenient for angle calculations because they do not depend on how far the camera is from the person.
  • An optional segmentation mask. Useful for visual overlays, but you do not need it to compute posture cues.

The model tracks 33 body landmarks. For a posture monitor, you will mostly use the face and shoulder points: the nose, the left and right ears, and the left and right shoulders. Confirm the exact index order and field names against the current documentation before you write code, because the API has changed across releases.

From webcam frame to posture cue

A working pipeline has five stages. Each one is a place where a bug can look like a posture problem, so test them separately.

  1. Capture. Request the camera with navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia({ video: true }), attach the stream to a hidden or visible <video> element, and wait for loadeddata before running detection.
  2. Detect. Create the landmarker once, outside your React render cycle, and call its video detection method on each animation frame. Pass a monotonically increasing timestamp when the API requires one.
  3. Check confidence. Skip frames where the key landmarks (ears and shoulders) are missing or report low visibility. Treating a missing point as a zero coordinate produces false alarms.
  4. Compute features. Derive a small set of geometric values, for example the forward offset of the ear relative to the shoulder, the angle of the line from shoulder to ear, and the tilt between the two shoulders.
  5. Smooth and decide. Average the features over a window of several seconds, and only raise a cue when the smoothed value stays outside the user’s threshold for a set duration.

Steps 3 through 5 are design choices. Using several landmarks, requiring sustained deviation, and letting users move the threshold all reduce the chance that a single noisy frame triggers a reminder. None of these choices is a Google recommendation, and none of them is a clinically tested method.

The browser main-thread constraint

Google’s web guide for MediaPipe, which includes JavaScript sample code, warns that video detection calls run synchronously and can block the main thread. In a React app, a blocked main thread means the page stops responding to clicks, the UI stops repainting, and timers drift. That is the most likely reason a posture app feels sluggish even when the model itself is working.

The same guide identifies web workers as a way to move inference off the UI thread. You have two architectures to choose from.

Approach Responsiveness of the UI Implementation complexity Measured gain
Detection on the main thread, called from a React effect Can stall while each video detection call runs Lowest; the landmarker lives in the component tree Not stated in the sources reviewed
Detection in a dedicated web worker, with frames sent from the main thread and landmarks returned by message Main thread stays free while inference runs Higher; you manage worker startup, frame transfer, and message timing Not stated in the sources reviewed

The documentation supports the blocking concern and the worker option, but it does not quantify how much responsiveness a worker recovers on a given device. If you choose a worker, measure input latency and frame throughput before and after the change rather than assuming the improvement.

Model variants and what to compare

The official documentation presents Lite, Full, and Heavy model variants. Their trade-offs are model size and complexity, inference speed, and detection quality on your target device. Use the current official model guidance to choose a starting point, then test the variants yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Variant What to compare on your device Published measurement in the sources reviewed
Lite Speed on a laptop CPU, battery draw, landmark stability at a desk distance Not stated
Full Balance of speed and stability for typical webcam resolutions Not stated
Heavy Whether the extra accuracy justifies slower frames on your hardware Not stated

No comparative benchmark is available in the official sources reviewed, so do not describe any variant as the fastest or the most accurate until you have measured it in your own app.

Privacy: what “on-device” covers and what it does not

Google’s MediaPipe terms state that input processing happens on-device and that input images and video are not sent to Google servers. The same terms say the APIs may contact Google for bug fixes, model updates, and hardware-accelerator compatibility information, and may send performance and utilization metrics. They also state that developers are responsible for obtaining informed consent for metrics processing where the law requires it.

That gives you one accurate sentence to publish: the pose input is processed on-device by MediaPipe. It does not make the whole app private by default. Your app has its own data flows, and you need to document each one.

Behaviour Who controls it What to verify in your build
Video frames during detection MediaPipe runtime in the browser Confirm with browser developer tools that frames are not uploaded by your code
Model and WASM file downloads Your hosting and the MediaPipe distribution List every network request at page load and note which hosts are contacted
Metrics and update contacts described in the MediaPipe terms MediaPipe terms; your consent flow Decide whether you need a consent prompt for your audience and jurisdiction
Stored frames or landmarks Your app code Store only the settings you need; avoid saving frames unless you have a clear reason
Settings and session history Your app code (for example localStorage or IndexedDB) Show where they live and offer a clear-data option
Analytics or error reporting Your app code and third-party SDKs Audit every script; state what is sent, or send nothing

Verify each row in the finished application. The MediaPipe terms describe the library’s behaviour, and they cannot tell you what your own code does.

Calibrating cues against workstation guidance

OSHA describes a neutral computer posture as one with the hands, wrists, and forearms straight and roughly parallel to the floor; the head level and generally in line with the torso; the shoulders relaxed; the elbows close to the body; and the feet supported by the floor or a footrest. Use these as the reference for the wording of your reminders, not as a pass-fail test.

Because OSHA also says there is no single correct arrangement for everyone, build the monitor so that the user sets their own baseline:

  • Baseline capture. Ask the user to sit in a position they find comfortable and press a button. Store those landmark values as the reference for that user and that camera position.
  • Adjustable sensitivity. Let the user widen or narrow the allowed deviation and the duration before a cue appears.
  • Neutral wording. Use reminders such as “Head has drifted forward, check your screen height” rather than scores or grades.
  • Easy to disable. Provide a pause option and a way to turn off cues during video calls or when the user is away from the desk.

Screen placement affects posture more than the software does. OSHA recommends a monitor directly in front of the user, at least 20 inches away, with the top line of the screen at or below eye level. These are workstation recommendations, not a validated threshold for an AI classifier, so do not tie your cue thresholds to them as if they were measured limits. OSHA also notes that adjustable supports help, and that misaligned screens can encourage awkward postures. An adjustable monitor stand is therefore a reasonable optional accessory for readers who want to change screen height. The software does not require one.

Testing before you rely on the cues

The camera and room affect detection as much as the code does. Test these conditions and record results per device:

  • Different camera heights and angles, including a laptop camera looking up from a desk
  • Low light and strong backlight from a window
  • Partial body visibility, such as when the lower body is outside the frame
  • More than one person in view, and the app’s behaviour when the tracked person leaves the frame
  • Glasses, headphones, and hair that partly cover the ears
  • Frame rate and input latency with the main-thread version and the worker version

Publish the device names, browser versions, and test conditions with any performance claim. Until you have done that, describe the app as a prototype, and describe its cues as observations about camera geometry.
