GarageBand’s Feedback Protection on Mac can stop input monitoring when feedback occurs, but a warning is not always proof that you can hear a feedback loop. Apple says some USB microphones with internal limiting or gain control may trigger warnings even when no feedback is occurring. For audible feedback, monitor through headphones instead of speakers and turn monitoring off when you do not need it.
What GarageBand Feedback Protection does
Input monitoring routes a live microphone or instrument signal through GarageBand so you can hear it while recording or playing. On Mac, Feedback Protection can stop monitoring when feedback occurs. Feedback can happen when sound from speakers reaches a microphone or instrument pickup and is routed back through the same monitoring path.

Apple notes that some USB microphones with internal limiting or gain control may produce Feedback Protection warnings when no feedback is occurring. The warning alone therefore does not establish that an audible feedback loop is present. Apple’s support article describes this specific USB-microphone behavior.
What to do if you hear feedback
- Use headphones instead of speakers. Headphones keep the project playback from being sent into the recording space, where a microphone or pickup could capture it. GarageBand’s input-monitoring help recommends headphones to help avoid feedback.
- Lower speaker output if speakers must remain on, and check that the track monitoring the input is the one you intend to hear.
- Turn input monitoring off when you are not actively playing or singing. This removes the live input from the listening path when you do not need it.
If you see a warning but hear no feedback
First check whether the input is a USB microphone with internal limiting or gain control. For that documented case, Apple suggests setting the track’s Monitor option to On rather than On with Feedback Protection. Treat this as a targeted troubleshooting step for false warnings with some USB microphones, not a universal setting for every recording setup. Apple’s guidance does not say that all feedback warnings are false.

GarageBand on iPhone and iPad: Crosstalk Protection
On iPhone and iPad, Apple documents a different feature name: Crosstalk Protection. It applies when a guitar or bass is connected through the headphone port and monitoring is on. Protection can change the instrument’s sound while you monitor it.
- Close GarageBand.
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then GarageBand.
- Toggle Crosstalk Protection.
Apple describes this setting in the GarageBand User Guide for iPhone. If the monitored tone changes, consider whether protection is enabled and whether its effect is appropriate for your setup.

Monitoring with an external device on iPhone
GarageBand’s Audio Recorder on iPhone can monitor with an external microphone or audio device, such as a headset or audio interface. Input-level adjustment depends on whether the connected source supports level control. See Apple’s Audio Recorder guide for those input details.

Quick diagnosis
- You hear a squeal or repeating loop: switch to headphones, reduce speaker output, confirm the monitored input, and disable monitoring when it is not needed.
- You see a warning but hear no loop: if you use a USB microphone with internal limiting or gain control on Mac, try Monitor On instead of On with Feedback Protection.
- Your guitar or bass tone changes on iPhone or iPad: check Crosstalk Protection in Settings under Apps > GarageBand, especially when connected through the headphone port with monitoring enabled.
