Stop ChatGPT’s Unnecessary Follow-Up Questions: One Prompt to Try

To reduce unnecessary follow-up questions, tell ChatGPT to make reasonable assumptions, state them briefly, and continue—while allowing it to ask when a missing detail blocks a safe or useful answer. Add the instruction before a request for a one-time preference, or save it in Custom Instructions to use it across chats. It is a request, not a switch that guarantees ChatGPT will never ask questions.

Use this prompt to ask for fewer follow-up questions

Paste this at the start of a chat, before describing the task:

Answer my request directly without asking follow-up questions unless a missing detail prevents a safe or useful answer. When information is missing, make a reasonable assumption, state it briefly, and continue. If you truly cannot proceed, ask one concise question that resolves the blocker.

The instruction does more than say “don’t ask questions”: it tells ChatGPT what to do when details are missing and sets a narrow exception for information it genuinely needs. The wording is a practical prompt example, not an official OpenAI command or a tested guarantee. OpenAI recommends making prompts clear and specific, providing context, and refining them when needed in its prompt engineering guidance.

Choose where to put the instruction

Option How to set it up Best fit Persistence
One chat Paste the instruction before your request. A temporary preference or a task where you want to control assumptions. That conversation.
Custom Instructions On web or desktop, open Settings → Personalization and enter it in Custom Instructions. On iOS or Android, open Settings → Customize ChatGPT and enter it there. A recurring preference for direct answers across chats. OpenAI says Custom Instructions updates apply immediately across chats, including existing conversations.

OpenAI documents Custom Instructions as available on web, desktop, iOS, and Android, across all plans. Its Help Center page lists character limits of 1,500 for Free and Go users and 5,000 for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education users. These are product settings that may change; check the current Custom Instructions page if the limit or settings path matters to you.

Why ChatGPT may still ask a question

ChatGPT can ask follow-up questions as part of its normal interaction, as OpenAI’s ChatGPT FAQ notes. A preference for fewer questions does not override every situation. For example, OpenAI says Deep Research may ask clarifying questions before starting. A question can also be useful when an assumption would make the answer unsafe or unusable.

Personality settings do not provide a hidden “never ask” control: OpenAI describes personality as affecting style rather than capabilities or safety rules, and says clarifying questions may sometimes help. See its personality documentation.

If it keeps asking, make the request easier to answer

When a follow-up is unnecessary, revise the request to identify what ChatGPT may assume and what result you want. For example, specify a default audience, format, or budget rather than leaving those choices open. If one missing detail truly determines the answer, provide it up front or keep the prompt’s exception for a single concise question.

For a complex task, break the work into focused requests and prioritize the most important constraints. OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends clear, specific instructions and notes that right-sizing complex requests can help.

Custom Instructions are not Memory

Custom Instructions are direct guidance you provide about how ChatGPT should respond. Memory is a separate feature that can recall relevant preferences and details from chats and other sources. You do not need Memory to save the instruction above; its availability and controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings. OpenAI explains the distinction in its Memory help article.
