Use your phone’s built-in charging protection. On Google Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization, enable Use charging optimization, then choose Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80%. On Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > Battery > Battery protection (or Settings > Device care > Battery on some versions) and select the mode your model provides.
Why leaving a phone at 100% can matter
A phone that remains plugged in overnight spends a long period at, or near, full charge. That is not an immediate safety problem, but time at a high charge level and heat can add stress to a lithium-ion battery. Google notes that a plugged-in Pixel can warm up, while Samsung warns that heavy use during charging creates heat. Charging protection reduces the time spent fully charged without requiring a special cable, charger or accessory.

Adaptive modes delay the final part of charging until shortly before you normally unplug. Fixed-limit modes stop below full charge, sacrificing some morning runtime for a more conservative charging pattern.

How to turn it on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery health.
- Open Charging optimization.
- Turn on Use charging optimization.
- Select Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80%.
What Adaptive Charging does
Adaptive Charging learns when you usually unplug and completes the charge shortly before that time, so the phone is not sitting at 100% for most of the night. Google says it needs about 14 days to learn charging habits. A long or overnight session may reach 100% roughly one hour before the expected unplug time. Irregular routines, travel or a changed alarm can prevent it from activating as expected.

Adaptive Charging is available on Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel Fold. Pixel 4 has an alarm-based condition. The exact behavior can depend on the phone’s software and detected routine.
What the 80% limit does
Limit to 80% stops normal charging at 80%, leaving less capacity for the day but avoiding the highest charge range during an overnight session. Google lists this option for Pixel 6a and later. It is the stronger choice when you usually finish the day with plenty of battery and want a predictable ceiling rather than schedule-based behavior.

Pixel periodically charges fully so it can estimate capacity accurately. Google says that every 10th cycle, you should leave the phone connected for at least 30 minutes after 100% appears. That full charge is part of the phone’s measurement routine, not a reason to disable protection permanently.
When you need a full charge
For travel, navigation-heavy days or other unusually long use, temporarily turn off the 80% limit or use the phone’s documented full-charge control. Re-enable protection afterward so the normal overnight routine resumes.

Samsung Galaxy: three Battery protection modes
Find the control
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Select Battery protection.
On some Galaxy devices, the path is Settings > Device care > Battery. Labels and available modes vary by model, region and One UI version.
Basic
Samsung’s Basic mode allows charging to 100%, then stops and resumes at 95% if the level drops while the phone remains connected. It reduces repeated topping-up but does not keep the battery below full overnight.

Adaptive
Adaptive uses Maximum protection during estimated sleep hours, then switches to Basic before you normally wake. Samsung estimates sleep time from usage patterns. Irregular schedules can reduce or prevent the expected behavior, so this mode works best when your overnight routine is fairly consistent.
Maximum
Maximum limits charging to 80% on Samsung’s Gulf support documentation. It provides a fixed ceiling similar in purpose to Pixel’s 80% setting, although the exact implementation can differ by device and software.

Samsung’s Korean documentation describes sleep-time protection stopping around 80% and charging to 100% immediately before waking. It also notes that One UI 7.0 can expose selectable 80%, 85%, 90% or 95% ceilings. Because that information is region-specific, treat those percentages as model- and software-dependent rather than universal Galaxy features.

Heat and habits still matter
- Keep the phone cool while charging; avoid covering it with bedding or placing it in a hot car.
- Heavy gaming, video recording or other demanding use while plugged in can raise temperature.
- Protection modes reduce high-charge time, but they cannot eliminate heat caused by the environment or workload.
- If a menu is missing, install the latest software offered for your model and check both Battery and Device care; eligibility varies.
What to do if charging still reaches 100%
- Confirm that the protection toggle is enabled, not merely that the Battery settings page was opened.
- Check whether your model supports the selected mode: Pixel’s 80% limit starts with Pixel 6a, while Adaptive Charging starts with Pixel 4a; Galaxy support differs by model and software.
- Give schedule-based modes time to learn. Pixel cites about 14 days, and Samsung describes a similar learning period for sleep-pattern protection.
- Keep a consistent bedtime and unplug time when testing Adaptive mode.
- Look for a temporary full-charge override that may have been enabled for travel or an unusually long day, then switch protection back on.
