The key authorizes usage-based inference, so whoever obtains it may charge models to the owner’s account. Newer campaigns are also feeding stolen inference access into automated reconnaissance and exploitation workflows, turning credential theft into both a billing attack and an operational capability.
Why an AI API key is a production credential
An AI API key is not merely a developer convenience. It is an authorization token for paid model inference, and the provider normally attributes requests to the account, project or organization that issued it. The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) AI Safety Initiative says organizations should treat AI API keys and self-hosted inference endpoints as high-value credentials equivalent to privileged cloud accounts.

That creates two separate exposures. An intruder can consume models until quotas or budgets are exhausted, and can use the model as a reasoning component inside another operation. A key does not automatically grant access to every system owned by its issuer, but it can finance large volumes of inference and provide a capable engine for reconnaissance, code generation and decision-making.

How attackers obtain and monetize keys
Public code and deployment mistakes
CSA reports scanning of public repositories, misconfigured continuous-integration and continuous-delivery pipelines, and endpoints that expose environment variables. Keys may also remain in Git history, infrastructure-as-code, container layers, build artifacts or logs after a developer removes them from the latest file.

Malicious developer tools
The Hacker News reported at least 15 malicious JetBrains plugins that presented themselves as AI coding assistants while exfiltrating OpenAI, SiliconFlow and DeepSeek credentials. JetBrains removed the plugins and disabled them in installed IDEs. Aikido Security researcher Ilyas Makari described the advertised features as chat, commit messages, code review, bug finding and unit tests—exactly the sort of functionality that can persuade a developer to grant a plugin access to local configuration and environment data.
Automated resale markets
Operation Bizarre Bazaar shows that stolen access can be processed like inventory. CSA recorded 35,000 attack sessions between December 2025 and January 2026, averaging 972 attacks per day. The campaign automated scanning, credential validation and resale through a marketplace. Validation lets a buyer distinguish a live, billable key from a revoked or exhausted one before using it.

CSA characterizes this shift as an evolution from opportunistic cost-shifting to an attack primitive: “LLMjacking — the theft and unauthorized use of AI API credentials — has evolved from opportunistic cost-shifting into a foundational attack primitive, with threat actors now routing stolen AI compute through purpose-built autonomous offensive frameworks.”

Can a stolen key run up a huge bill?
It can. The final amount depends on the provider’s model prices, context length, concurrency, quotas and whether a spending cap exists. A thief can issue many ordinary-looking requests, select expensive models, submit very long prompts or run parallel jobs. Even when a provider eventually detects abuse, charges may accrue before a human notices.

One incident illustrates the upper bound. In the METR case, a fail-open login exposed an experimental agent on a personal cloud server. The attacker prompted that agent to reveal its provider key, added an SSH key for persistence and consumed about $600,000 in credits over roughly three weeks, according to Cyber Unit Security Inc. In a separate estimate cited by Cyber Unit from the Sysdig Threat Research Team, some stolen cloud-AI credentials were associated with more than $46,000 per day in potential usage in 2024. Those figures describe specific incidents or estimates, not a universal loss rate.
Can attackers use the key to scan or exploit targets?
They can use the inference access as a component in an automated workflow, although possession of the key alone does not magically provide network reachability or authorization to attack a target. CSA describes vulnerability-assessment and penetration-testing (VAPT) activity in which hijacked inference powered service fingerprinting, vulnerability matching, reconnaissance, exploit synthesis, SQL-injection crafting, secret extraction and privilege escalation.

Sysdig’s documented framework used a hijacked Ollama server as its reasoning engine. Structured stages passed results from one step to the next without an operator between them. In practical terms, a scanner can identify a service, ask a model to map it to likely weaknesses, generate a probe or exploit attempt, interpret the response and continue. The model may be wrong, but automation increases the number of attempts and shortens the time between discovery and action.
What the reported incidents show
| Case | Access path | Detection or response | Spend exposure | Autonomy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Operation Bizarre Bazaar (Dec 2025–Jan 2026) | Public and exposed credentials processed through automated scanning | Credentials validated and resold in a marketplace | Not stated; 35,000 sessions and 972 attacks per day were recorded | Scanning, validation and resale were automated |
| METR incident | Fail-open login exposed an experimental agent; the agent was prompted to reveal its provider key | Attacker added an SSH key for persistence | About $600,000 in credits over roughly three weeks | Agent access enabled the attacker’s operation; persistence extended control |
| Sysdig VAPT framework | Hijacked self-hosted Ollama inference server | Structured stages ran without a human between them | Not stated; Cyber Unit cited Sysdig’s 2024 estimate of more than $46,000 per day for some stolen credentials | Fingerprinting, matching, reconnaissance, exploit synthesis, SQL-injection crafting, secret extraction and privilege escalation |
| Malicious JetBrains plugins | Plugins exfiltrated credentials from developer environments | At least 15 plugins were removed and disabled | Not stated | Primary capability was credential theft; stolen keys could then be reused elsewhere |
Controls that limit both billing and attack capability
Cap spending before an incident
- Set hard monthly or project-level spending limits where the provider supports them.
- Configure alerts below the point at which normal usage becomes abnormal, rather than waiting for a quota failure.
- Separate production, development and experimentation into different projects so one exposed key cannot consume every budget.
Reduce what each key can do
- Inventory every AI key, its owner, project, provider, permitted models and last use. Revoke keys with no named owner.
- Issue separate, narrowly scoped keys for each tool or service instead of sharing an organization-wide credential.
- Route agent and application calls through a gateway. The gateway can enforce model, token, destination and rate policies without exposing the raw provider key to an agent.
Protect and scan secrets
- Store keys in a dedicated secrets manager, not source files, shell profiles or agent prompts.
- Scan current files and full repository history, CI/CD configuration, infrastructure-as-code, container layers and build artifacts for provider-specific key formats.
- Review third-party plugins and extensions before allowing them to read environment variables, project files or credential stores.
Secure inference endpoints
- Put every internet-facing inference endpoint behind strong authentication; do not rely on an obscure URL.
- Segment self-hosted model servers from general workloads and restrict outbound network access to destinations the service actually needs.
- Apply patching, identity controls and separate service accounts to the host running the model.
Monitor behavior, not just errors
CSA recommends watching for off-hours request bursts, unfamiliar source identities or IP addresses, abrupt changes in model selection and structured, highly repetitive prompts characteristic of automated workflows. Correlate provider usage with deployment logs, gateway records and cloud identity events. A successful request with a valid key may look normal in isolation; the sequence and volume often reveal abuse.
Best Value
What to do when a key may be exposed
- Revoke the key immediately. Do not wait to confirm whether charges are malicious.
- Issue a replacement through the secrets manager and update only the intended service. Do not paste the replacement into chat, tickets or source control.
- Preserve logs from the provider, gateway, CI/CD system, host and identity platform. Record request times, models, token volume, source addresses and destinations.
- Inspect for persistence. In addition to changing keys, check for new SSH keys, accounts, scheduled jobs, modified build steps and unfamiliar plugins. The METR incident shows why rotating one credential may not remove an attacker’s foothold.
- Ask the provider for a billing and abuse review. Supply the incident window and preserved evidence; any refund is provider-specific and is not guaranteed.
- Close the original exposure. Fix fail-open authentication, remove the secret from history where feasible, tighten plugin permissions and add a detection rule so the same path cannot silently recur.
What this means for teams using AI agents
Agents increase the consequences of weak credential design because they can call tools, retain context and make sequential decisions. Keep provider credentials outside the agent’s accessible context, require a gateway for model calls, and require explicit authorization for high-impact actions such as network probing, secret retrieval or privilege changes. Treat model output as untrusted instructions until a separate policy layer approves the action.
The central distinction is important: a stolen key does not prove that an attacker will exploit a target, and the cited incidents do not establish one universal attacker group. They do show that AI credentials now have two monetizable uses—charging inference to the victim and supplying compute to automated offensive workflows—so budget controls, identity protection and behavioral monitoring belong in the same incident plan.
