Stocks vs. Mutual Funds in Pakistan: Which Is Right for a New Investor?

For a new investor in Pakistan, individual PSX shares suit someone who wants to select and monitor companies directly; mutual fund units suit someone who prefers to delegate day-to-day security selection to a fund manager. Neither choice is inherently safer or more profitable. The right fit depends on your goals, time horizon, capacity for losses, need to access your money, willingness to research, and the costs and terms of the specific investment.

What you are buying

Individual shares listed on the PSX

A share represents ownership in a listed company in proportion to your investment. When you buy shares directly, you choose the companies and take responsibility for deciding when to buy or sell. The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) advises investors to trade through brokers with valid Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) licences. Its investor guide describes CDC’s role in share delivery and NCCPL’s role in settlement. Read the PSX guide for new investors.

Mutual fund units

A mutual fund investor buys units in a scheme that invests according to a stated plan and mandate. The fund manager selects investments within those rules, but that does not make every fund diversified, low-risk, or suitable for every goal. Review the particular scheme’s documents to understand what it may hold and the risks involved. SECP announced a regulatory framework for investment plans on January 6, 2025, following consultation that included MUFAP. See SECP’s announcement.

ETFs are related, but not the same route

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are another investment route in the exchange ecosystem; they should not be treated as a synonym for open-end mutual funds. On April 28, 2026, SECP announced a phased ETF market roadmap that included measures intended to expand access and lower costs, including direct sales by asset management companies. That was a roadmap announcement, not evidence that every proposed feature is already available. Check current implementation status before relying on a specific route. Read SECP’s ETF roadmap announcement.

How direct shares and mutual funds compare

Factor Direct PSX shares Mutual fund units
Who selects investments? You choose individual listed companies. The fund manager invests within the scheme’s mandate and plan; check its documents.
Work involved You research companies and monitor their performance. PSX advises new share investors to seek professional advice. You delegate day-to-day security selection, but still compare the objective, exposures, risks, fees, and redemption terms of the specific fund.
What drives risk? The company, the price you pay, how concentrated your holdings are, and market conditions. A short-run price rise is not assured. The asset class, mandate, holdings, duration, credit or equity exposure, and market conditions. The label “mutual fund” alone does not establish low risk.
Costs to check Broker commission and applicable transaction charges or levies, including relevant PSX, CDC, NCCPL, and SECP items; taxes may also apply. Check the current broker schedule and applicable rules. Check the current offering document and fund manager reports for management fees, any sales or load charges, and other expenses. Comparable current fee figures across funds are not established here.
Operational route Open and use an account with a registered broker; verify current SECP licensing and the broker’s PSX standing. Use the asset manager or distribution route for the chosen scheme and review its current documents.
Question to ask yourself Do I want to choose and monitor individual companies? Which specific mandate and fee structure match my goal and risk tolerance?

Choose by the job you need the investment to do

Start with your circumstances

Before choosing an instrument, write down your goal, when you expect to need the money, how much loss you could tolerate, whether you need ready access to the funds, and how much time you can devote to managing investments. Those answers matter more than a broad claim that one type of investment is always better.

  • Direct shares may fit if you want to select companies yourself and can make time for research and ongoing monitoring.
  • A mutual fund may fit if you prefer delegated security selection and are willing to assess the particular scheme’s mandate, risks, costs, and redemption terms.
  • Either choice needs scrutiny if you may need the money soon: understand the investment’s risks and how and when you can access the proceeds before committing.

Compare like with like

For a mutual fund, compare schemes in the same category and examine their mandates, risk disclosures, portfolio exposures, recurring and one-time charges, redemption conditions, and dated performance after fees. For shares, assess each company rather than treating the market as a single investment. Past or dated performance does not promise future results.

How to proceed without guessing

If you are considering direct PSX shares

  1. Verify the broker’s current SECP licence and PSX standing before opening or funding an account. PSX’s new-investor guide explains the broker, delivery, and settlement roles.
  2. Read the broker’s current fee schedule and check applicable charges, levies, and taxes before placing trades. PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide covers investor considerations.
  3. Research each company and monitor its performance. Do not base decisions on market rumours, implied promises, or an assumption that a share price will rise in the short run.

If you are considering a mutual fund

  1. Read the scheme’s current offering documents and identify its investment objective, mandate, and permitted exposures.
  2. Review its risk disclosures and current portfolio exposures, then compare charges, including management fees and any applicable sales or load charges.
  3. Check redemption conditions and dated performance after fees, while remembering that historical results do not guarantee future performance.

What cannot be settled by a general comparison

There is no single risk level or fee figure that applies to every Pakistani mutual fund, and no general comparison establishes that direct shares or funds will deliver the better return. Current minimum investments, fund-level expense ratios, comparable net returns, and the tax treatment applicable to a particular investor are not established here; these depend on the instrument, scheme, date, and individual circumstances. Confirm current terms with the provider and seek licensed professional advice for a decision tailored to you. PSX specifically says new share investors should obtain proper professional investment advice before investing in shares.
