There is no universally correct percentage of stocks, bonds and cash. The right mix is the one that gives a specific goal a realistic chance of success without exposing money you will need soon to losses you cannot afford or tolerate. Decide in this order: identify the goal, set the date the money may be needed, measure both your financial ability and emotional willingness to withstand losses, then select diversified investments and a rebalancing rule.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes stocks as having the highest historical risk and return of the three broad categories, bonds as generally less volatile with more modest returns, and cash equivalents as having the lowest investment-loss risk but lower return potential. Those are long-run descriptions, not promises. Inflation can reduce what cash buys, while any bond or stock can lose value.

What stocks, bonds and cash actually do
Asset allocation is the division of a portfolio among broad asset classes. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing states: “The asset allocation decision is a personal one.” A percentage by itself is not a plan; its usefulness depends on the purpose and timing of the money behind it.

| Stocks | Greater long-term growth potential among these broad categories | Greater volatility and risk of loss, particularly over short periods; historical results do not guarantee future returns |
| Bonds | Typically less volatile than stocks and capable of providing income, with more modest return potential | Risk varies widely by issuer, maturity, credit quality and type; high-yield bonds can carry substantially higher risk |
| Cash and cash equivalents | Liquidity and relatively little short-term price fluctuation; a savings account may suit an emergency reserve or other short-term goal | Lower growth potential, and inflation can erode purchasing power over time; deposit protection and interest rates depend on the account and institution |
These categories contain meaningful differences. A broad stock index fund and a single-company stock are both stocks, but they do not provide the same diversification. A short-term government bond and a lower-quality, long-maturity corporate bond are both bonds, but their interest-rate and credit risks differ. Cash in a checking account, a money-market deposit account and a money-market fund also have different features, protections and fees. Look through the label to the actual holdings and terms.

Begin with the goal, not an allocation percentage
“How much should I have in stocks?” is incomplete until you identify what the money is for. A retirement account, a tuition bill and a home-repair reserve can sit in the same household but require different treatment because their dates and consequences differ.
Name the objective
Write one sentence describing the goal and the amount you expect to need. Examples include “fund a first-year college payment,” “maintain six months of essential expenses,” or “accumulate retirement income.” Naming the objective prevents a long-term account from being managed as if it were a near-term spending account, or vice versa.
Set a realistic need date
The SEC calls the period until you need the money your time horizon. Use the earliest plausible date, not only the date you hope to use the funds. A purchase that could move forward by a year has a shorter practical horizon than a fixed calendar target. If withdrawals will occur over several years, map the first withdrawal and the later ones separately; money needed first should not depend on the same amount of market risk as money needed much later.
Account for consequences of being wrong
Ask what happens if the account is down when the goal arrives. Delaying retirement, taking a larger loan, postponing education or cutting essential spending are different consequences from postponing a discretionary purchase. The more damaging a shortfall would be, the more important it is to protect the near-term portion from large fluctuations and to keep adequate liquidity.
Measure risk capacity and risk willingness separately
Risk tolerance has two parts: ability to withstand a loss and willingness to remain invested through one. They can point in opposite directions.
Ability to take risk
Risk capacity is a financial constraint. Consider stable income, emergency savings, debt payments, insurance, job security, other assets and the flexibility of the goal date. Someone with a fixed bill due next year may have little capacity to expose that money to a market decline, even if they have a high income. Conversely, a person with decades before withdrawals and substantial reserves may be able to absorb temporary losses.
Willingness to take risk
Willingness is behavioral. Imagine your chosen investment falling sharply and estimate whether you could keep the plan without selling in fear. If a loss would cause you to abandon the portfolio, the allocation is too aggressive for your behavior, regardless of what a calculator says. An allocation that looks conservative on paper can still be unsuitable if you will repeatedly switch after short-term news.

Use the stricter limit
When capacity and willingness differ, the weaker constraint usually governs. A financially able but unwilling investor needs a mix they can hold. An enthusiastic investor who cannot afford a loss needs to protect the goal despite feeling comfortable with volatility. Treat this as a planning decision, not a character test.
Match each time horizon to an appropriate job
Immediate and short-term needs
Money for an emergency reserve, an upcoming tax payment or a purchase within the next few years has little time to recover from a market decline. A savings account or another cash equivalent may be appropriate for the portion whose primary job is availability and stability. Check interest terms, access limits, account insurance and fees. Higher yield does not eliminate the need to understand withdrawal restrictions or loss risk.
Intermediate goals
For a goal several years away, you may have some recovery time but not unlimited time. The decision depends on the exact date, the flexibility of that date and the size of any shortfall you could absorb. A diversified bond allocation can reduce dependence on stock-market performance, but bonds are not identical to cash: their prices can fall when interest rates rise, and lower-quality issuers can default or be downgraded. As the date approaches, review whether the remaining risk still matches the amount and timing of the liability.
Long-term growth goals
Retirement decades away or another distant objective may permit more exposure to stocks because there is more time for the portfolio to recover from downturns. That does not make a stock-heavy mix mandatory. Future contributions, pensions, debt, other assets and your ability to stay invested all matter. A long horizon expands the range of tolerable volatility; it does not remove the possibility of loss or guarantee a particular return.
Diversify within the percentage you choose
Asset-class percentages are only the first layer. The SEC distinguishes diversification among asset classes from diversification within each class. A narrow fund focused on one industry, country or type of issuer may leave you concentrated even if it is only one line in your account.
Inspect holdings, not just fund names
For every fund or exchange-traded fund, read the current prospectus, summary holdings and stated strategy. Check whether it owns broad market exposure or a narrow slice, whether it is domestic or international, and what risks the manager emphasizes. A fund labeled “balanced” or “income” does not establish a particular stock, bond or cash percentage unless its documents do.
Find overlapping positions
Holding several funds does not automatically increase diversification. Two funds can own many of the same companies or bonds, causing the portfolio to behave like one concentrated position. Compare their top holdings, sectors, regions, credit qualities and maturities. Consolidating overlapping funds may make the intended allocation easier to see and maintain.

Separate diversification from safety
Diversification can reduce the damage from one issuer, sector or region performing poorly, but it cannot prevent a broad market decline. It also cannot turn a high-yield bond fund into a cash substitute. Use diversification to manage concentration, then evaluate the remaining market, interest-rate, inflation and credit risks.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Include liquidity, fees and taxes in the decision
Investor.gov identifies liquidity, fees, risk, return and diversification as considerations when evaluating investment products. Liquidity means more than being able to sell: it includes how quickly money arrives, whether a penalty applies and whether the price can be below what you paid when you need it.
Liquidity questions
- When can you withdraw or sell?
- Could a withdrawal penalty, bid-ask spread or settlement delay interfere with the goal date?
- Is the balance protected by deposit insurance, or can its value fluctuate?
- Do you need immediate access to the entire amount or only a portion?
Fee questions
- What is the fund expense ratio or account charge?
- Are there transaction, advisory, transfer or redemption fees?
- Does a lower advertised fee come with a narrower strategy or less service?
- How do recurring fees affect the account over the years?
Fees reduce the return that remains invested. Compare like with like, and read the fee schedule for the exact share class or account. Tax treatment also varies by account type and jurisdiction; obtain individualized tax advice when the consequences could change your choice.
How to compare two or more investment options
When evaluating a fund, managed portfolio or target-date option, use the same questions for each candidate rather than choosing from a performance ranking.
| Comparison axis | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure | Current stock, bond and cash holdings; domestic and international split; bond maturity and credit quality | Reveals the risks the portfolio is actually taking |
| Change over time | Whether the mix follows a glide path, stays fixed or is adjusted by a manager | Shows how risk may change before the goal date |
| Liquidity | Trading or withdrawal timing, restrictions, penalties and account protections | Determines whether the money will be available when needed |
| Diversification | Number and breadth of holdings, concentration and overlap with your other accounts | Helps prevent unintended dependence on one issuer or segment |
| Costs | Expense ratio, advisory fee, transaction charges and other recurring costs | Fees reduce the net return and can differ materially between similar choices |
| Maintenance | Who rebalances, how often, and whether you must make trades | Affects the time, discipline and tax consequences of keeping the plan on target |
Target-date funds: convenient, but not automatic
A target-date fund holds a mix of investments and typically shifts from a more stock-heavy allocation toward more bonds as the target year approaches. That can simplify implementation for a retirement goal because one fund performs the ongoing asset-allocation work.
Compare glide paths
Funds with the same target year can have different stock, bond and cash exposures at the start date, at the target date and after the target date. Some are designed to reach their most conservative point at retirement; others continue changing beyond it. Read the glide-path chart and the fund’s explanation rather than assuming the year in its name determines the allocation.
Check the contents and cost
Review the underlying funds, geographic exposure, bond quality, cash policy, expense ratio and any additional account fee. Look for overlap with investments already held elsewhere. A target-date fund can create unintended concentration if it duplicates the same holdings as your separate funds.

Test whether the target year fits your life
The named year is not a promise that the fund will provide a specific income or preserve principal. Compare its risk at the date you expect to begin withdrawals with your own spending plan, guaranteed income, emergency reserve and willingness to tolerate losses. The SEC’s March 25, 2025 target-date-fund bulletin emphasizes that the glide path is personal and that investors must assess whether a fund fits their circumstances.

- Write the goal. Record the purpose, target amount, earliest likely use date and whether the date can move.
- Separate near-term cash needs. Keep emergency reserves and imminent bills in an account designed for liquidity before deciding how to invest longer-term money.
- List constraints. Note income stability, debt, insurance, other investments, tax considerations and any withdrawal restrictions.
- Assess capacity and willingness. Describe the loss you could financially absorb and the loss you could emotionally stay invested through. Use the lower of those limits.
- Choose broad exposure. Select diversified holdings whose stock, bond and cash roles are clear. Read what each fund owns and identify overlaps.
- Check product details. Confirm liquidity, fees, account protections, tax treatment and the date on which the information was current.
- Write the policy. State the intended allocation range, the reason for it, the review schedule and the rule that will trigger rebalancing.
- Revisit after life changes. Update the plan when the goal date, income, debt, family obligations or ability to absorb losses changes, not merely when headlines change.
Rebalancing without chasing performance
Market movements can push a portfolio away from its intended mix. Rebalancing means bringing holdings back toward the plan, either by directing new contributions, selling part of an overweight position, or using both methods. The SEC describes periodic and threshold-based approaches.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Periodic review
Choose a calendar interval that you can follow, such as an annual review, and compare the current mix with the written policy. A calendar review is a check, not an instruction to trade every time prices move. Consider taxes, transaction costs and account rules before acting.
Threshold review
Set a band around each target and act only when an allocation leaves that band. The band should be wide enough to avoid needless trading and narrow enough to keep risk from drifting materially. Document the threshold and apply it consistently rather than adjusting it after seeing which category performed best.
Use contributions first when practical
New deposits or withdrawals can move the portfolio toward its intended mix without selling. This may reduce transaction costs and taxable sales, but it does not remove the need to check whether the overall risk still fits the goal.
Do not change the allocation simply because one category has recently performed well. Buying more after a surge and abandoning a lagging category can turn a long-term plan into a series of performance-chasing decisions.
Illustrative goal decisions
Emergency reserve
The reserve’s job is immediate access and reliability, not maximum growth. A savings account or suitable cash equivalent can meet that job; investing the reserve in volatile assets could force a sale during a downturn. Recheck the amount when essential expenses, employment or household obligations change.
Best Value
Home purchase with a firm closing date
As the closing date approaches, the ability to recover from a market decline shrinks. Separate the amount required for the purchase and closing costs from money intended for a later goal. Evaluate any bond exposure for interest-rate and credit risk rather than treating it as identical to cash.
Retirement decades away
A distant retirement goal can generally withstand more short-term volatility than a bill due next year, which may justify meaningful stock exposure for growth. The appropriate level still depends on future withdrawals, other income, savings rate and whether you can remain invested during a severe decline. Increase attention to liquidity and sequence-of-returns risk as withdrawals near.
Education funding with staggered payments
Map each tuition payment separately. The first payment has a shorter horizon than a payment several years later, so one undifferentiated allocation can expose near-term tuition to unnecessary volatility. Review the schedule annually and move the amount needed soon into assets suited to that date.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a rule of thumb as a prescription
Age-based formulas and simple stock-percentage rules ignore goal dates, pensions, debt, reserves and behavior. Use them, at most, as a starting question; test the result against your actual liabilities and tolerance.
Calling every bond safe
Bond prices can decline as rates change, and high-yield bonds can carry elevated default and market risk. Read duration, maturity, credit quality and issuer concentration before assigning a bond holding the job of cash.
Ignoring inflation
Stable dollar value does not guarantee stable purchasing power. Cash may be appropriate for a near-term need while becoming a poor sole strategy for a goal many years away if its return fails to keep pace with inflation.
Assuming several funds equal diversification
Overlapping holdings can make multiple funds move together. Compare holdings and exposures, then simplify where duplication adds cost without adding a distinct role.

Rebalancing from headlines
Changing the mix after a market rally or sell-off often locks in a performance-chasing cycle. Follow a written calendar or threshold method and change the policy only when the goal or your circumstances change.
Forgetting the rest of the household balance sheet
Employer plans, bank accounts, pensions, real estate, debt and insurance all affect the risk your investments need to carry. Review the combined picture rather than assigning a percentage to one account in isolation.
Questions to answer before investing
- What exact goal does this money serve?
- When is the earliest date I may need it?
- What shortfall could I financially absorb?
- What decline could I remain invested through without abandoning the plan?
- How quickly must I access the funds, and what restrictions apply?
- What does each holding own, and where do holdings overlap?
- What are the recurring and transaction fees?
- How will inflation, interest-rate changes, credit events and market declines affect this goal?
- When will I review the plan, and what objective rule will trigger rebalancing?
- What changed in my life that would justify changing the allocation?
Bottom line
Choose stocks, bonds and cash by assigning each dollar a job and matching its risk to the date and consequences of that job. Stocks offer the greatest historical growth potential but the largest short-term swings; bonds usually moderate volatility but vary greatly in credit and interest-rate risk; cash supports liquidity while sacrificing growth and potentially losing purchasing power to inflation. Diversify inside each category, compare liquidity and fees, document a review rule, and adjust when your goal or circumstances change. This is general U.S.-oriented investor education, not a personalized recommendation; specific products, fees, holdings and protections must be verified for your account.
