Whether bonds cushion a stock sell-off depends on the shock’s effect on inflation, economic growth, interest-rate expectations, credit markets, currency values and investor demand. A resilient portfolio therefore starts with your goals, time horizon, withdrawals and existing exposures—not with a headline-driven stock-to-bond percentage.
Stocks generally provide long-term growth but can lose value quickly when profits, risk appetite or financing conditions deteriorate. Bonds can provide income, liquidity and a counterweight to some equity risks, yet longer-maturity and lower-quality bonds can also fall sharply, sometimes at the same time as stocks. The practical task is to choose exposures whose risks fit your plan and to rebalance according to that plan rather than trying to predict the next geopolitical event.

Why there is no automatic stock-and-bond trade
Markets respond to the economic consequences of an event, not simply to its political label. A conflict or diplomatic crisis may weaken growth and push investors toward high-quality government debt. It may instead disrupt energy or commodity supplies, lift inflation expectations and cause interest rates to rise—an environment in which both shares and longer-term bonds can lose value. A central-bank response, fiscal spending, currency moves and the starting level of interest rates can all change the result.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) made this conditional relationship visible in its September 2025 Quarterly Review. It reported that correlations between US Treasuries and other safe assets or uncertainty gauges had approached zero after April 2025. The review also found that most non-US investor selling of US assets in April reversed in May and June and did not identify material portfolio reallocation away from US assets in the evidence available at publication. Those are observations for that review window, not a forecast or a rule for the next crisis.

Traditional diversification can fail in a particular regime. A 2024 paper from State Street Global Advisors documented simultaneous losses in equities and government bonds during 2022. That episode does not mean every bond category behaves like a stock index; it demonstrates why the label “bonds” is too broad to serve as a complete risk analysis.
What stocks contribute—and what can hurt them
Long-term growth and ownership risk
Shares represent claims on companies. Over long periods, profits, dividends and reinvestment can provide growth that helps an investor outpace inflation. During a geopolitical shock, however, markets can reprice future earnings immediately. Companies exposed to disrupted trade routes, sanctions, commodity costs, tourism, defense spending or a particular region may move very differently from a broad global index.
Equity prices can fall even when the eventual economic damage is uncertain. A diversified stock holding reduces the impact of one company or country, but it cannot remove market-wide risk, valuation risk or the possibility that an event triggers a recession or a jump in required returns.
Liquidity and concentration considerations
Public shares are usually easy to trade, but liquidity can become expensive during a fast sell-off through wider bid-ask spreads and large price gaps. Review whether your stock exposure is concentrated in one country, sector, currency or factor. A portfolio that appears diversified by number of holdings can still depend heavily on the same technology, energy, financial or emerging-market risk.
What bonds can do in a portfolio
Potential ballast when growth is the main concern
High-quality government bonds can gain value when investors expect weaker growth and lower policy rates. Coupon payments and scheduled principal repayment can also make bond cash flows more predictable than stock dividends, provided the issuer remains able to pay. This is why bonds have often served as a source of liquidity or a stabilizer for investors who need to fund spending during an equity drawdown.
That benefit is conditional. J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s historical US analysis found that bonds were more effective diversifiers during low-to-moderate inflation periods and that stock-bond correlations were not reliably negative in high-inflation periods. Its chart uses five-year rolling correlations and US Consumer Price Index data through June 30, 2019; the paper’s conclusion is historical, not a live reading of today’s correlation. See the J.P. Morgan analysis.
Income, liquidity and spending support
A bond allocation can be designed around cash-flow needs rather than an abstract “defensive” label. Maturing securities or high-quality short-term holdings may cover near-term withdrawals, reducing pressure to sell stocks after a fall. Intermediate or longer maturities may provide more interest-rate exposure and potentially more price movement. The appropriate mix depends on when money will be needed and how much loss can be tolerated before then.

Bond risks that matter during geopolitical shocks
Interest-rate and duration risk
Bond prices generally move inversely to market yields. When yields rise, existing bonds with lower coupons become less attractive and their prices fall; when yields decline, those prices can rise. Longer-maturity bonds usually have greater duration and therefore greater price sensitivity to a given yield change.
Reserve Bank of New Zealand researchers found larger cyclical price swings in longer-maturity bonds than in shorter-maturity bonds in their 1980–2010 sample. Their study examined a global stock index, US government bonds and gold from an international investor’s perspective, with assets denominated in US dollars. The result is a historical relationship, not a guarantee about every maturity in a future crisis.
Inflation and real-return risk
An event that restricts energy, food or manufactured supplies can raise inflation expectations. Nominal bonds then face two pressures: yields may rise as investors demand compensation for inflation, and fixed coupons buy less in real terms. Inflation-linked securities can respond differently because their principal or payments are tied to an inflation measure, but they still carry real-rate, maturity, liquidity and issuer risks.
Credit and default risk
Corporate, high-yield and emerging-market bonds add credit spread risk. A geopolitical shock can weaken an issuer’s cash flow, restrict refinancing or cause a currency mismatch. Their yields may rise and prices fall even if government-bond yields decline. “Fixed income” therefore includes exposures with very different relationships to equities and to each other.

The IMF’s October 2024 Global Financial Stability Report, Chapter 1, discusses how quantitative tightening, a changing buyer base for government bonds and interest-rate risk over the life of longer-dated securities can affect bond-market volatility. These are risks the IMF discusses, not a current yield or price forecast. A large government borrowing program or reduced central-bank demand can push yields higher even when bonds are being sought as a haven.
“Safe haven” is a conditional description
Calling an asset a safe haven means it has shown defensive behavior in a defined circumstance; it does not promise protection in every crisis or over every time horizon. The RBNZ-hosted paper by Baur and McDermott states: “A safe haven cannot be a safe haven in the long-run or at all times.” Its analysis covers 31 years of daily observations from January 1, 1980, through December 31, 2010, and reports different behavior across crisis episodes. It explicitly identifies periods in which bonds or gold did not act as a safe haven for part of an event.
The same sample reported daily-return standard deviations of 0.5% for 10-year US government bonds, 0.9% for the global stock index and 1.3% for gold. These are statistics from that historical sample, not present-day expected volatility or a like-for-like promise of protection. Asset behavior can change when inflation, policy credibility, market liquidity or investor positioning changes.

| Purpose | Is the holding intended for long-term growth, income, near-term spending, liquidity or risk balancing? | A growth asset may be volatile but useful over decades; a spending reserve must be dependable over its withdrawal window. |
| Economic channel | Would the shock mainly weaken growth, raise inflation, lift rates, or combine those effects? | Growth fears can support some government bonds, while inflation and rate fears can hurt both stocks and longer bonds. |

| Inflation sensitivity | Are payments fixed, inflation-linked or tied to business revenue? | Unexpected inflation erodes fixed purchasing power and can change central-bank policy expectations. |
| Currency exposure | Are assets and future expenses denominated in the same currency? | Exchange-rate moves can amplify or offset local asset returns during a global shock. |

How to assess your own balance without a universal percentage
1. Write the time horizon for each dollar
Separate money needed soon from money intended for decades of growth. Near-term withdrawals have little time to recover from a market fall; long-horizon capital can generally tolerate more interim volatility. List expected withdrawals, emergency reserves, taxes and other obligations before considering risk assets.
2. Measure loss capacity and loss tolerance separately
Loss capacity is the financial ability to withstand a decline without missing essential goals. Loss tolerance is the emotional ability to remain invested when prices fall. A plan fails if it assumes one while ignoring the other. Include income stability, debt, insurance, dependents and the flexibility to postpone discretionary spending.
3. Map every exposure
Look through funds and accounts to identify equity regions, sectors, currencies, bond issuers, maturities, credit ratings and inflation exposure. Include employer stock, real estate, private investments and cash. A bond fund’s average duration and credit mix can matter more than its broad category name.
4. Assign a job to each sleeve
For every holding, record whether it is there for growth, spending liquidity, income, diversification or inflation sensitivity. If two holdings have the same job and the same underlying risks, simplify only after checking taxes, fees, liquidity and account constraints. If a holding has no identifiable role, it deserves review rather than automatic retention or sale.

5. Test several—not one—shock pathways
Use qualitative scenarios rather than a single geopolitical forecast:
- Growth shock: earnings fall, inflation eases and policy rates are expected to decline. High-quality government bonds may cushion equities, but the result depends on starting yields and duration.
- Inflation shock: energy or supply disruptions lift prices and rates. Nominal long bonds may fall with stocks; shorter maturities, inflation-sensitive assets or cash-flow flexibility may behave differently.
- Credit and funding shock: corporate spreads widen and refinancing becomes difficult. Lower-quality bonds can behave more like equities, while government securities may be supported by a flight to quality.
- Currency or regional shock: exchange rates and local policy dominate returns. Unhedged foreign assets may gain or lose in the investor’s home currency independently of their local-market performance.
These are analytical possibilities, not predictions of a particular conflict or market outcome.

6. Set a written rebalancing policy
Decide in advance how you will restore your intended risk mix after market moves: for example, by reviewing on a calendar schedule or when an allocation moves outside a band you have chosen for your plan. The reviewed evidence does not establish a universally correct interval or band. A policy can limit headline-driven trading, but it should account for taxes, transaction costs, account type and liquidity.

Government bonds and high-quality sovereign debt
These instruments generally carry less default risk than lower-quality issuers in the same currency, but they still have duration, inflation, currency and policy risks. A foreign sovereign bond can lose value for a home-currency investor even when its local price rises.
Short-, intermediate- and long-maturity holdings
Short maturities usually fluctuate less when yields change and can be useful for near-term spending, although their income resets more quickly as rates change. Intermediate maturities balance reinvestment and price sensitivity. Long maturities offer greater exposure to falling or rising yields and therefore larger potential gains or losses. The RBNZ evidence supports treating maturity as a material risk choice rather than a minor specification.
Investment-grade corporate bonds
These add company credit exposure to interest-rate exposure. They may provide more income than government debt but can lose value when economic conditions threaten profits or refinancing. Examine sector concentration, rating distribution, maturity schedule and the fund’s liquidity—not only its headline yield.
High-yield and emerging-market debt
Higher coupons compensate for greater default, spread, liquidity and sometimes currency risk. In a severe risk-off episode, these bonds can correlate positively with stocks. They may have a role for an investor who understands those risks, but they should not automatically be counted as the defensive part of a portfolio.
Inflation-linked bonds
Linking payments to an inflation index can reduce the impact of an unexpected rise in consumer prices, but these securities still move with real interest rates, maturity and market liquidity. They address one risk channel rather than guaranteeing gains during a geopolitical crisis.

Common mistakes and better alternatives
Assuming every bond is defensive
Mistake: treating a high-yield or long-duration fund as equivalent to short-term government debt. Better approach: inspect credit quality, duration, currency and liquidity and match each to a stated portfolio role.
Best Value
Chasing a crisis headline
Mistake: selling stocks or buying bonds after prices have already moved, based on an untested forecast. Better approach: follow a written allocation and rebalancing policy tied to goals, unless your circumstances or plan have genuinely changed.
Ignoring inflation
Mistake: assuming a recessionary shock is the only possible outcome. Better approach: test a combined growth-and-inflation shock and check how fixed cash flows would affect future purchasing power.
Confusing historical protection with a guarantee
Mistake: quoting a past negative correlation as if it were a permanent law. Better approach: attach the sample dates and inflation context to every historical statistic and keep expectations probabilistic.
Overlooking forced-sale risk
Mistake: investing money needed for rent, tuition, taxes or emergencies in assets that may be down when cash is required. Better approach: build a liquidity plan first, then invest the surplus according to its longer horizon.
A practical review checklist
- List each goal, its date and the amount that must be available.
- Separate emergency and near-term spending reserves from long-term capital.
- Record stock exposures by region, sector and currency.
- Record bond exposures by issuer, credit quality, maturity or duration, currency and inflation linkage.
- Estimate how a growth shock, inflation shock and credit shock could affect each sleeve.
- Check whether a proposed “defensive” holding has historically moved with equities under stress and whether its liquidity is adequate.
- Document the conditions that would trigger a review, and distinguish a plan change from a market forecast.
- Review taxes, fees, account restrictions and trading costs before implementing changes.
- Revisit the plan when goals, withdrawals, income, debt or risk capacity changes—not merely when a geopolitical headline appears.
Bottom line for balancing stocks and bonds
Geopolitical uncertainty alone cannot tell you whether stocks or bonds will perform better. Bonds may diversify equities when a shock lowers growth and interest-rate expectations, but inflation, rising yields, credit stress, currency moves or bond-market supply can make that relationship weak or even positive. Stocks remain the main long-term growth engine for many portfolios but carry substantial drawdown and concentration risk.
Build the balance from the job each holding must perform, the timing of your cash needs and the risks already present in your other assets. Use historical studies and current market reviews as context with their dates attached, not as promises. A disciplined, written allocation and rebalancing process is more robust than trying to trade each geopolitical headline.
