U.S. stocks ended Friday, October 2, 2026, higher after a weaker-than-expected September jobs report. The Nasdaq Composite gained about 1.2% and touched an intraday record; Nvidia also briefly set an intraday high, but neither fact means the index or stock closed at a record. Treasury yields initially fell after the report and later rebounded, trimming some of the session’s early gains.
What the September jobs report showed
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 29,000 in September 2026 and the unemployment rate was 4.2%. The BLS described both measures as having changed little. These are preliminary estimates and may be revised.

The report also revised earlier months down. July payroll growth was revised from 21,000 to a decline of 10,000, while August growth was revised from 162,000 to 133,000. The BLS said the combined July and August employment level was 60,000 lower than previously reported.

They describe related but distinct parts of the labor market. The BLS Employment Situation release for September 2026 is the primary source for these figures.

Why stocks rose after a weak jobs report
Investors interpreted slower hiring as easing near-term pressure for a Federal Reserve rate increase. That reading can support stock prices because interest rates affect borrowing costs and the value investors assign to future earnings. The market recap described Treasury yields falling initially after the report, then rebounding as the session progressed; stocks eased from their highs alongside that reversal.
This sequence does not establish that the jobs report alone caused the gains. The session also reflected Treasury yields, earnings expectations, and other contemporaneous news. Futures-implied odds of Fed actions are market snapshots that can shift quickly; they are not a Federal Reserve decision or a promise about what policymakers will do.

Did Nvidia hit a record high?
Yes—Nvidia briefly reached a reported intraday record of $237.88 on October 2, according to the Metapress-reproduced CNBC recap. It later closed below its prior record closing price. An intraday high is the highest traded price during a session; a record close would mean the closing price itself exceeded previous closes. The two are not interchangeable.

The report gave markets evidence of weak hiring, including downward revisions to July and August, and traders adjusted their expectations accordingly. But one monthly release does not determine the Fed’s next move. The jobs figures are preliminary, rate expectations can change with new data and other developments, and only the Federal Reserve’s own announcement establishes a policy decision.
