The company has not yet publicly launched its first product; it says the service is expected in the coming weeks and remains subject to regulatory licensing.
What Matters is building
Founder and CEO Per Österström describes Matters as a consumer bank designed around an AI Advisor rather than treating artificial intelligence as an add-on. The planned service combines everyday neobank functions with software intended to help customers understand spending, make more informed financial decisions, increase savings and work toward personal goals.

Customers would pay a flat monthly subscription. Matters says selected transaction income that traditional banks typically retain—including interchange and foreign-exchange revenue—would instead be returned to customers through accumulated cashback. The company has not disclosed the subscription price, the exact banking features included, or the formula for calculating cashback.
Who invested in the pre-seed round
The financing was led or anchored by Swedish angel investor Jakob Johansson. Other named participants are former Klarna chief operating officer Knut Frängsmyr, Voi co-founder Douglas Stark, Röko CEO Johan Bladh, Validio CEO Patrik Tran and Evoke CEO Per Widerström.

How the AI-native bank would make money
Subscription revenue
Matters plans to charge a recurring, flat monthly fee instead of relying solely on the spread of fees and transaction income common in consumer banking. The amount and billing terms have not been announced.
Cashback funded by transaction economics
The company intends to pass selected interchange and foreign-exchange revenue back to customers as accumulated cashback. That approach is a business model proposal, not a published benefit available today; eligibility, exclusions, payout timing and any caps remain unspecified.

AI guidance versus automatic control
The AI Advisor is described as helping users interpret their finances and make decisions. Matters has not said that the system will automatically move money, execute trades, change account settings or make payments without user approval. Those distinctions will matter when the product, permissions and consumer-protection terms are published.

Not on the evidence available at the announcement. Matters was still preparing its first consumer product, and the funding plan includes obtaining regulatory licences. Until the relevant licences are granted and a product is launched in a specific market, Matters should be treated as a fintech startup building a prospective banking service—not as a currently available, fully licensed retail bank.

The company also intends to expand across the European Union. The announcement does not identify the licensing jurisdiction, a launch country, a banking-as-a-service partner, deposit-protection arrangements or the legal entity that would hold customer funds. Those details are essential for evaluating where customers could sign up and what protections would apply.

Because the product had not launched, the announcement provides no user count, revenue figure, retention data or measured improvement in customers’ financial outcomes. It also does not report a valuation or disclose how much of the round came from each investor.
Why Matters says an AI bank is needed
Matters cites two figures to describe the problem it is targeting: half of Gen Z and millennials do not know where their money goes, and 80 per cent of young adults report regular financial stress. These are company-cited figures; the published coverage does not identify an underlying survey organisation, year or methodology, so they should not be read as independently verified statistics.
Österström frames the company’s premise this way: “Banks earn more when consumers manage their money worse. At Matters, we’re purposely travelling in the opposite direction. Our goal is to build a bank that actively makes financial wellbeing available to anyone, not just those who already enjoy it.” The practical test will be whether the finished service can provide useful guidance while making its fees, data use, recommendations and incentives understandable.
When will Matters launch?
Reports published when the company emerged from stealth on October 15, 2026 said a first consumer launch was expected in the coming weeks. No exact date, supported country list, pricing page or public sign-up process had been announced. Availability therefore depends on product readiness and regulatory approval, and may vary by EU market.
