The U.S. trading week of October 5–9 is shaped by September services data, Federal Reserve meeting minutes, weekly jobless claims and a preliminary consumer-sentiment reading. Those releases may influence how investors assess economic momentum and interest-rate policy, but the available calendar and historical seasonality do not support a confident forecast that stocks will rise this week.
What could move markets this week?
The main scheduled catalysts are services-sector readings on Monday and the Federal Open Market Committee’s minutes on Wednesday. Claims and consumer sentiment add two different views of labor conditions and household expectations later in the week. The release schedule is subject to change, so confirm times and dates close to publication.
| Date | Scheduled event | What it measures or may clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, October 5 | S&P Global U.S. Services PMI at 9:45 a.m. ET; ISM Services PMI at 10:00 a.m. ET | Two timely readings on U.S. service-sector activity. Kiplinger’s economic calendar lists the releases. |
| Tuesday, October 6 | U.S. trade balance for August at 8:30 a.m. ET | Measures the difference between U.S. exports and imports. Listed by Kiplinger’s economic calendar. |
| Wednesday, October 7 | FOMC meeting minutes at 2:00 p.m. ET | Can provide more detail on policymakers’ views about inflation, the labor market and interest-rate policy, according to the Associated Press week-ahead preview. |
| Thursday, October 8 | Weekly unemployment claims and preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey for October are listed | Claims offer a limited, frequent labor-market signal; sentiment reflects households’ views about the economy. The AP preview describes these measures. |
| Friday, October 9 | The AP preview places the University of Michigan October survey on Friday | Because calendars differ on the survey date, check the final release schedule rather than assuming a Thursday or Friday publication. |
The calendar listing and AP preview do not agree on the University of Michigan survey’s day. Verify the final release schedule before relying on either date. The listed time for that survey is not stated in the cited material.
Is this a jobs or inflation report week?
No major Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs or inflation release is scheduled during October 5–9. The BLS calendar shows the September Employment Situation report was scheduled for Friday, October 2, before this outlook week. September CPI is scheduled for October 14, and PPI for October 15, after it. The BLS October 2026 release schedule gives times in Eastern Time.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That timing matters: markets will have other economic signals to assess, but this week is not the scheduled arrival of the monthly BLS jobs or inflation reports.
What is on the earnings calendar?
The earnings slate is limited. Kiplinger’s earnings calendar lists no noteworthy reports for Monday and includes Lamb Weston and Constellation Brands later in the week. Kiplinger labels dates tentative unless a company has officially announced them, so treat these as a watchlist rather than confirmed appointments and check each company’s investor-relations announcements for firm dates.

Does October seasonality mean stocks are likely to rise?
No. Historical averages can provide context, but they are not a forecast for a specific week. The 2024 edition of the Stock Trader’s Almanac, using index histories through 2023, reports positive average October changes across its full-sample tables, while its October presidential-election-year averages are negative for all three indexes.
| Index | Average October change, full sample | Average October change in presidential-election years |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | 0.8% | −1.0% |
| S&P 500 | 1.0% | −0.9% |
| Nasdaq | 0.8% | −2.2% |
These are historical monthly averages reported by the Stock Trader’s Almanac in its 2024 edition, with data through 2023—not current performance figures or independently recalculated results. The election-year figures use a narrower historical filter than the full-sample October averages. Neither set says what the market will do in the week of October 5–9.

The title’s “season of strength” framing should therefore be read as a seasonal idea, not a guarantee or a week-specific prediction. The exact-title listing attributes that framing to Investor’s Business Daily, but the original article was not available for review; it does not establish a verified forecast for this week.

- Services PMIs: Watch what the September readings indicate about activity in the service sector; they are activity measures, not market-return predictions.
- FOMC minutes: Look for discussion that helps explain policymakers’ thinking on inflation, employment and rates, rather than treating the minutes as a new policy decision.
- Claims and sentiment: These are separate, limited indicators—one tied to labor-market conditions, the other to household views. They do not replace the monthly BLS employment or inflation reports.
- Earnings: Confirm tentative company dates directly before treating them as firm catalysts.
- Seasonality: Keep monthly historical averages distinct from expectations for a single trading week.
No current index levels, valuation or market-breadth readings, or specific analyst forecast are established by the cited material. A directional call would require evidence beyond this calendar and the historical averages.
