Major U.S. banks are scheduled to report third-quarter results on Tuesday, October 13, making their releases an early marker for earnings season. Before the market open, Yahoo Finance reported mixed futures: Dow futures were up 0.5%, Nasdaq-100 futures were down 0.6%, and S&P 500 futures were below the flatline. Those are premarket snapshots from its report, not live quotes or the market’s eventual direction.
What is the stock market doing today?
Yahoo Finance described U.S. stock futures as mixed ahead of the open. The report’s figures capture a particular premarket moment; futures can change before and during the regular session, and they do not establish how the indexes will finish.

- Trading and investment banking: Look for the contribution of markets activity and deal-related business. A strong trading quarter is not directly comparable with a result driven by consumer lending.
- Lending and deposits: Changes in loan balances, deposit levels, and related income can reveal how customers and businesses are using credit and holding cash.
- Credit quality: Loan losses, provisions, and delinquency trends help show whether borrowers are having trouble repaying.
- Management’s outlook: Listen for updated expectations and explanations of risks, demand, and business conditions. The forward-looking view may matter as much as the headline result.
Business mix matters: these banks do not earn money in identical ways. Compare each company with its own prior periods and business segments before drawing conclusions across the group.

JPMorganChase reported second-quarter 2026 net income of $21.2 billion, or $7.70 per share, including significant items. That is historical context, not a third-quarter result or a forecast. The bank’s Q2 2026 earnings release also quoted chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon describing $16.9 billion in net income and 23% return on tangible common equity (ROTCE), excluding gains related to Visa and certain equity investments. He attributed the quarter’s results to favorable conditions and market activity, alongside execution, investment, and capital deployment. These figures use different qualifications from the $21.2 billion headline and should not be conflated.

What these reports can—and cannot—signal
Bank results offer an early look at activity in markets, lending, deposits, and credit, but four companies cannot by themselves establish how the entire S&P 500 or economy will perform. Their business models differ, and their reports describe the quarter that has ended, while management outlooks speak to conditions ahead. Treat the releases as an early set of indicators, not a verdict on the full earnings season.
