Why the Hunger Games comparison fits—and where it stops
The comparison is useful in a narrow sense: both stories place young people in a controlled competition where the stakes are life and death, and Lawrence directed The Long Walk as well as films in The Hunger Games series. But the contests are not interchangeable. In The Long Walk, 50 boys take part in a walking endurance test; the original Hunger Games premise sends a boy and a girl from each of twelve districts into a fight to the death.

The films also differ in rating and intensity. Netflix Tudum’s July 2026 guide lists the original Hunger Games films and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes as PG-13 titles, while The Long Walk was made with an R rating. That distinction says more about the intended intensity than a claim that one film is simply a replacement for the other. Netflix’s guide described the films as streaming on Netflix at that time; catalog availability can change and may differ by region.
Why The Long Walk is rated R
Lawrence has described the rating as a deliberate creative choice, not an incidental label. In a CinemaBlend report relaying an SFX Magazine interview, he said the film needed viewers to feel the distance, passing time, changing weather, and the characters’ physical, emotional, and psychological deterioration. He added that the story did not deserve a PG-13 treatment, and that King also believed it had to be R.
Lawrence also said the film needed to be “violent, intense, sad” and a tough watch to remain truthful to the book and preserve its themes. Those remarks are Lawrence’s account of the adaptation’s approach; the report does not present the secondhand account of King’s view as a direct quote from King.
