STEM Toys vs. Educational Apps: Benefits, Tradeoffs, and How to Choose

Neither STEM toys nor educational apps are automatically better for learning. The better choice depends on the skill you want to support, how actively the child engages, whether someone can join in, and what the activity replaces. Some interactive apps can help young children learn—particularly early math—but hands-on play can support a broader mix of skills and shared problem-solving.

Do educational apps actually help kids learn?

Some can. A 2019 systematic review of controlled and quasi-experimental studies in children younger than six found learning benefits across multiple studies, particularly in early mathematics for typically developing children. The review screened 1,447 studies and included 35; those figures describe the review process, not the number of children or the size of an effect. The authors characterized the evidence as emerging, noting that studies varied and that risk of bias was unclear in many. Read the review record on PubMed.

That finding does not mean every app labeled “educational” teaches effectively. Start with a specific goal—such as recognizing quantities or practicing letter sounds—and ask whether the app’s activities and feedback actually support it. A child completing levels or earning rewards is not, by itself, evidence that the learning transfers beyond the app. The American Psychological Association recommends evaluating educational technology by its learning strategy and goal, rather than relying on the label. What can STEM toys offer that apps may not?

Building, experimenting, and pretending can invite a child to handle objects, test ideas, explain what happened, and change a design. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) describes play as supporting cognitive, language, social-emotional, and physical development. Its guidance highlights activities such as pretending, problem-solving, creativity, and talking with caregivers. These benefits are broader than practicing one academic skill.

A hands-on building toy, such as an age-appropriate STEM construction kit, may give a child a tangible way to try an idea and revise it. But a toy is not automatically engaging or educational just because it is physical: consider whether it allows open-ended exploration or mostly asks the child to follow a fixed sequence. The AAP’s report discusses the value of active, creative, hands-on, and pretend play, but it is guidance about play—not a direct trial showing that every STEM toy beats every app. Read the AAP report on toys.

How does the way a child uses an app matter?

Content and context both count. The AAP’s 2026 policy statement says high-quality educational content may support STEM and language learning, and that joint engagement with a caregiver can strengthen effects. Talking about a prompt, asking a child to explain a choice, or connecting an on-screen idea to a real-world activity can make media use more interactive.

The same statement reports associations between heavier use of noneducational, solo media and less optimal outcomes in several domains. Those associations do not prove that a particular educational app causes harm. They do reinforce the value of considering the content, the child’s experience, and whether media is crowding out other activities. Read the AAP’s 2026 policy statement.

Compare a particular toy and app on these points

What to compare Questions to ask
Learning goal What should the child understand or be able to do afterward? Does the activity teach or practice that skill, rather than merely advertise itself as educational?
Active engagement Does the child build, test, predict, explain, or make meaningful choices? Or mainly tap through prompts and rewards? For a toy, look for room to build or pretend; for an app, look at whether feedback and questions encourage thinking.
Social interaction Can a caregiver or sibling join, talk through an idea, or extend the activity? Shared engagement can matter for both play and app use.
Developmental fit Is the challenge and content appropriate for this child? For very young children, follow current pediatric guidance as well as the product’s age and safety information; do not buy solely to push a milestone.
Opportunity cost What is the activity taking the place of? Consider sleep, movement, reading, hands-on play, and time with caregivers—not just the number of minutes on a screen.
Practical fit Will the family use it repeatedly? Does it require a device or connectivity? Do setup, storage, or small pieces suit the home? These are practical decision prompts, not outcomes established by the cited studies.

The APA advises looking beyond screen time alone to what technology replaces. A short app session that fits alongside other valued activities is a different choice from a routine that displaces sleep, physical activity, reading, or conversation.

Are STEM toys worth it, or should you choose an app?

There is no direct toy-versus-app winner established by the evidence cited here. The app review examines early learning from apps; the AAP toy report explains developmental benefits of play. They address related but different questions, not whether one entire category is universally superior. The AAP report also cautions that evidence does not show possible benefits of interactive media matching those of active, creative, hands-on, and pretend play with traditional toys. That is pediatric guidance about play and interaction, not proof from a head-to-head randomized comparison.

Choose the option that fits the child’s goal and invites active engagement. If possible, join the activity, then notice whether the child is thinking, experimenting, talking, or simply following prompts—and whether it is displacing something else the family values. For a very young child, check current pediatric guidance and the activity’s age and safety information before use.
