Stellar Repair for Exchange is a Windows desktop tool for recovering mailbox content from Exchange EDB files; Stellar also offers a separate online repair service. The right route depends on whether your database can be uploaded under your organization’s policies, how large it is, which export destination you need, and whether you need a repeatable desktop workflow. Neither route should be treated as a guarantee that every item—or an entire Exchange server—can be restored.
What Stellar Repair for Exchange does
Stellar describes its desktop application as a way to scan damaged Exchange EDB files and recover mailbox content such as email, contacts, attachments, calendars, tasks, notes, journals, and public folders. It lists support for Exchange Server 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003, 2000, and 5.5. The product is focused on extracting mailbox data from EDB files and exporting it. The documented workflow does not establish that the software rebuilds Exchange server infrastructure, fixes the underlying cause of corruption, or replaces tested backups and a recovery plan.
Online service or Windows desktop application?
The online repair service and the locally run desktop product are separate routes. Do not assume they share the same limits, features, data path, or licensing terms. Before choosing, confirm current online size and retention limits directly with Stellar; the available independent review discusses limits, but service terms can change. These are conditional selection criteria, not assurances about recovery results. For either route, verify the mailbox allowance in the applicable license, the export destination you need, and whether message-level preview or search is available in that edition.
What the available review evidence shows
GBHackers reports uploading a 248 MB EDB to Stellar’s online service and receiving 1,336 mailbox items as a PST in under seven minutes. That is a result from that publication’s reported test—not a representative benchmark, typical recovery rate, or promise of speed or completeness. GBHackers, 2026

WinBuzzer describes working with an offline EDB in the desktop edition, reconstructing mailbox content, exporting it, choosing a temporary-file location, and searching recovered messages by several fields. The evidence supports evaluating the product as an EDB mailbox-recovery option; it does not support a universal recovery-rate claim. Stellar’s own description calls it a tool to repair corrupt EDB files, which is marketing language rather than an independent assessment.

How to decide before processing a database
- Establish the recovery target. Identify whether you need selected mailbox items, complete mailboxes, or an export for a new Exchange or Microsoft 365 destination. Do not equate mailbox-data export with restoring the Exchange service itself.
- Check the data-handling route. If considering the online service, confirm that uploading the EDB is allowed by your organization and review current service terms, size limits, and retention. If the file must stay on your environment, evaluate the desktop product’s local workflow.
- Confirm compatibility and capacity. Compare the Exchange version and Windows environment against Stellar’s current specifications. For desktop processing, account for memory, disk availability, the source database, and any temporary files.
- Match features and license to the job. Verify current export destinations, preview or search needs, mailbox allowance, and whether the license covers the number of databases or mailboxes involved. - Protect the recovery process. Preserve an untouched copy of the original EDB and follow your organization’s recovery procedures. Treat the tool as one part of recovery, not as a substitute for backups or validation of the recovered data.
How it relates to Exchange’s native recovery utility
Stellar’s support material compares its product with EseUtil and identifies Stellar Repair for Exchange as third-party software for mailbox recovery from corrupt or inaccessible EDB files. EseUtil is a native Exchange utility, while Stellar’s product is a separate commercial tool; they should not be described as interchangeable Microsoft features.
