Neither company’s latest results alone show which stock is the better investment. Stellantis reported a profitable second quarter in 2026 after a loss-making 2025, while Volkswagen Group remained profitable in the first half of 2026 but reported lower operating earnings and vehicle sales. Those periods and measures are not directly comparable—and without current share prices, valuation data and the relevant share class, the evidence does not support a buy-or-sell verdict. A sound comparison starts with each group’s business mix, then tests profitability, cash generation, financial risk and execution before asking what investors are paying for each security.
What are you comparing?
Stellantis and Volkswagen Group are global automakers, but their reporting perimeters and financial measures differ. Volkswagen reports a substantial Financial Services division alongside its automotive business, and its Chinese joint ventures are accounted for using the equity method. Stellantis reports industrial measures, including industrial free cash flow and industrial available liquidity. Group revenue, profit and cash-flow figures therefore do not automatically describe the same underlying businesses.

For an investment comparison, distinguish the performance of vehicle operations from financing activities, and compare like periods and like measures wherever possible. Treat issuer-defined adjusted metrics as useful context, not as substitutes for statutory results or as automatically equivalent to another company’s measures.

What do the latest results show?
The latest periods located are different: Stellantis reported the second quarter of 2026, while Volkswagen Group reported the first half of 2026. Do not read the figures below as a head-to-head quarterly comparison. They provide separate snapshots of each company’s recent performance.

| Company and period | Reported results | How to read them |
|---|---|---|
| Stellantis, Q2 2026 | Net revenues were €43.5 billion, up 13% year over year; net profit was €0.3 billion; adjusted operating income (AOI) was €0.8 billion, with a 1.8% adjusted operating margin; industrial free cash flow was €1.0 billion; and industrial available liquidity was €44.1 billion at quarter-end, equal to 27% of trailing-twelve-month net revenues. | Stellantis says revenue growth was led by North America, where revenue rose 32% year over year; South America rose 6%, Enlarged Europe was flat, and Middle East & Africa and Asia Pacific were slightly down. The company labels its reported data unaudited. AOI, industrial free cash flow and industrial available liquidity are company-defined measures. Stellantis Q2 2026 results, July 30, 2026. |
| Volkswagen Group, H1 2026 | Sales revenue was €158.1 billion, approximately level year over year; operating result was €5.9 billion, down 11.6%; operating return on sales was 3.8%; Automotive Division net cash flow was €3.2 billion, compared with negative €1.4 billion in H1 2025; and vehicle sales were 4.0 million, down 8.4%. | The cash-flow figure is for the Automotive Division, not the entire Group. Volkswagen described its 3.8% operating margin as too low. Its release also said the Chinese market was down 20% and European orders for all-electric vehicles grew by more than 50% in Q2; these are company-reported, market-specific observations, not measures of global demand. The headline figures point to different near-term questions: can Stellantis sustain a recovery beyond one quarter, and can Volkswagen improve earnings while maintaining cash generation? They do not answer whether either stock is cheap or attractive at its current market price.
Why does the FY2025 baseline matter?
Annual results put the newer snapshots in context and show why one profitable quarter or half-year should not be mistaken for a durable trend.

| Company, FY2025 | Reported annual results | What needs further examination |
|---|---|---|
| Stellantis | Net revenues were €153.5 billion, down 2%; net loss was €22.3 billion; adjusted operating loss was €842 million; and industrial free cash flow was negative €4.5 billion. | The company attributed the net loss to €25.4 billion of unusual charges, primarily related to its strategic reset and changing regulatory frameworks. Its filing details items including platform impairments, product-plan realignment, battery joint ventures and discontinuation of the hydrogen fuel-cell program. Stellantis said revenue growth returned in H2 and cash flow improved from H1; those are management’s directional statements, not a reversal of the full-year loss. FY2025 results and 2025 Form 20-F. |
| Volkswagen Group | Sales revenue was €321.9 billion, compared with €324.7 billion; operating result was €8.9 billion, compared with €19.1 billion; and operating return on sales was 2.8%, compared with 5.9%. | The annual report attributes pressure in part to €4.7 billion of non-cash impairments and Porsche product-planning expenses, and €2.9 billion of additional US tariff expenses. Automotive Division revenue was €290.4 billion and its operating result was €5.3 billion, with a 1.8% return on sales. Financial Services operating result was €3.7 billion, up from €3.1 billion. The division figures help explain why Group revenue is not a clean measure of automotive scale or profitability. Volkswagen Group Annual Report 2025, results of operations. |
Stellantis’s adjusted operating measure and industrial free cash flow, and Volkswagen’s operating result and Automotive Division net cash flow, have different scopes and definitions. For a deeper numerical comparison, check each issuer’s reconciliation and notes rather than treating similarly named or commonly used metrics as interchangeable.
How strong are cash generation and financial resources?
Cash flow helps show whether reported earnings translate into funds available to operate, invest and meet obligations. But cash figures need their perimeter and timing attached: Volkswagen’s H1 2026 net cash flow is for its Automotive Division; Stellantis’s quarterly industrial free cash flow is a company-defined industrial measure.

- Separate operating and financing activities. Volkswagen’s Financial Services division affects Group revenue and profit, while automotive cash flow is reported on a narrower perimeter. Examine the division’s performance and the automotive business’s cash generation rather than using one Group figure as a proxy for both.
- Look beyond a single period. Working-capital changes, capital spending, restructuring payments and other timing effects can move cash flow substantially. Compare annual results and multiple interim periods where available, using consistent definitions.
- Distinguish liquidity from cash conversion. Stellantis reported €44.1 billion of industrial available liquidity at the end of Q2 2026, but liquidity is not the same thing as recurring free cash flow or proof that its recovery is complete.
- Account for expected cash costs. Stellantis’s FY2025 release anticipated roughly €2 billion in 2026 cash payments related to H2 2025 charges. Include the timing of those payments when assessing how reported liquidity and future cash generation may evolve.
For either company, examine debt and other funding obligations, pension treatment, capital expenditure and financial-services funding alongside operating cash flow. A single cash-flow number cannot establish how much cash is available to shareholders.

Stellantis: test the recovery against FaSTLAne 2030
Stellantis announced FaSTLAne 2030 on May 21, 2026. The company says the plan focuses on sharper brand-portfolio management; investment in global platforms, powertrains and technology; partnerships; manufacturing-footprint optimization; execution; and regional empowerment. It plans to invest over €24 billion over five years in global platforms, powertrains and technologies. Its stated targets include putting 50% of global annual volume on three global platforms by 2030 and using multi-regional powertrain solutions for nearly 50% of volume. These are company targets, not independently validated forecasts; the announcement says objectives depend on planning assumptions and that certain partnerships remain subject to discussion, definitive agreements and approvals. Investors can judge progress through reported product launches and quality, regional sales mix, plant utilization and cash conversion. The key test is whether the plan’s spending and portfolio changes lead to sustained improvements in operating margins and cash generation—not just an early revenue rebound.

Volkswagen: look for earnings improvement, not only product momentum
Volkswagen’s H1 commentary highlighted new vehicles, a software roadmap, cost reductions and competitiveness. CEO Oliver Blume said the Group expected full-year performance above the prior year despite a challenging environment; that was management outlook, not an achieved result. CFO and COO Arno Antlitz described the 3.8% operating margin as too low and called for faster structural cost reduction. The H1 release also reported more than 50% growth in European orders for all-electric vehicles in Q2, while describing weakness in China. Neither signal alone establishes broader demand or future profitability. Volkswagen Group H1 2026 results.

Track whether reported results show higher operating margins, realized cost savings, better product economics, software delivery, improvement in China and continued automotive cash generation. Announced initiatives matter to investors only to the extent that they show up in subsequent performance.

Both companies face risks that can affect sales, costs and the value of future investments. Compare the exposure rather than assuming a strong result in one region or technology will offset weakness elsewhere.
- Regional mix: look at revenue, margins and market positions by region, particularly North America, Europe, China and South America. The companies’ reported geographic commentary uses different periods and does not, by itself, provide a fully matched regional comparison.
- Products and capacity: assess whether launches arrive on schedule, meet demand and support profitable production. Platform reuse and factory utilization matter only if they improve costs and cash generation without compromising product competitiveness.
- Regulation, tariffs and currency: changes can alter product economics, costs and reported results. Volkswagen’s FY2025 report specifically identifies additional US tariff expenses; Stellantis linked much of its FY2025 unusual charges to its strategic reset and changing regulatory frameworks. Consider how future changes could affect each company rather than assuming those past items will recur at the same level.
- Partnerships and software: evaluate the delivery and economics of initiatives, not just their announcement. Delays, dependence on partners or execution problems can undermine the expected benefits.
How do you decide whether either stock is attractive?
Operating performance is only half of an investment case. A company can improve and still be a poor investment if the share price already reflects more improvement than it delivers; a struggling company can be mispriced in either direction. The figures here do not establish current prices, market capitalizations, valuation multiples, dividends, buybacks or the applicable share class and listing. Without those live inputs, it is not possible to conclude that Stellantis or Volkswagen is cheaper or the better investment.
- Identify the security you can actually buy. Verify the current listing, share class, currency and trading venue relevant to your account. Do not assume that different securities or listings have identical rights, pricing or investor treatment.
- Use current market data. Record the share price and shares outstanding as of the same date to calculate market capitalization. If comparing enterprise value, consistently account for debt, cash and other relevant obligations, including pension treatment.
- Choose matched operating measures. Compare earnings and cash flow over the same period and business perimeter. For Volkswagen, distinguish Group results from Automotive Division measures and Financial Services. For Stellantis, separate statutory results from its adjusted and industrial measures.
- Test more than one valuation lens. Consider earnings and cash-flow multiples, but inspect the quality and repeatability of the earnings or cash flow used. A loss-making year, unusual charges or a temporary working-capital benefit can make a single-year multiple uninformative.
- Compare shareholder returns and risk. Check the latest dividend and buyback policy, then weigh it against reinvestment needs, liquidity and execution risks. Dividends and repurchases do not replace an assessment of business value.
- Write down what would change your view. Set observable milestones—such as margin recovery, cash conversion, cost savings, product delivery or regional performance—and revisit them against later company reports.
This process makes the central question more precise: not simply which automaker reports better figures, but which business can deliver durable cash returns relative to the price and risks of the specific security being considered.
