SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 vs. Nova 7X vs. Nova 7P: What’s Different?

Choose the Arctis Nova 7X if Xbox support matters. SteelSeries lists the original Nova 7X as compatible with Xbox, PC, PS4 and PS5. The original Nova 7 and Nova 7P are listed for PC, PS4 and PS5, but not Xbox. Among the non-Xbox differences, Nova 7 and 7X include a ChatMix control for balancing game and chat audio, while Nova 7P provides a Sidetone control for hearing your own voice.

All three original headsets support Bluetooth alongside 2.4 GHz wireless audio, but each requires its own model-specific USB transmitter. A replacement 7X transmitter cannot give Xbox compatibility to a Nova 7 or Nova 7P. This guide covers the original family announced on August 23, 2022; keep it separate from the newer Nova 7 Gen 2 range.

Comparison at a glance

Model Official platform compatibility Distinct control Best fit
Arctis Nova 7 PC, PS4 and PS5; Xbox not listed ChatMix PC or PlayStation users who want a game/chat balance control
Arctis Nova 7P PC, PS4 and PS5; Xbox not listed Sidetone PlayStation users who want to hear their own microphone voice
Arctis Nova 7X PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox ChatMix Players who use Xbox as well as PC or PlayStation

The platform list above comes from SteelSeries’ support comparison for the original models. It does not mean the 7P is required for PlayStation: the support page lists PS4 and PS5 compatibility for all three. The X suffix identifies the model with Xbox support, not merely a transmitter that can be swapped onto another headset.

Xbox compatibility is the decisive difference

If an Xbox console is part of your setup, buy the Nova 7X version. SteelSeries identifies Xbox compatibility as a property of the specific headset model. The original Nova 7 and Nova 7P are not listed as Xbox-compatible, even though they work with PC and PlayStation systems.

This matters when you move between consoles. A Nova 7X can serve as one headset for Xbox, PlayStation and PC according to the official compatibility list. A Nova 7 or 7P can cover PC and PlayStation, but choosing one for a household that may add Xbox later creates a model limitation that a different transmitter cannot remove.

Do not interpret the 7X name as an optional Xbox accessory. The headset electronics and its wireless design determine compatibility. Buying an X transmitter separately does not convert another model into an Xbox headset.

ChatMix and Sidetone: the control you will actually use

ChatMix on Nova 7 and Nova 7X

ChatMix lets you adjust the balance between game audio and voice chat. If teammates become hard to hear during a loud match, you can move the balance toward chat; if conversation overwhelms gameplay, move it toward game audio. This is a mix control, not a microphone-monitoring feature: it changes the relative levels of incoming game and chat sound.

The original Nova 7 and Nova 7X share this control assignment. That makes the choice between them a platform decision first: select the 7X when Xbox is required, and the 7 when Xbox is not needed and you prefer the standard model.

Sidetone on Nova 7P

Sidetone feeds your own microphone signal back into the headset so you can hear your voice while speaking. It can make it easier to judge your speaking volume and avoid shouting, particularly when the earcups block outside sound. Sidetone is different from ChatMix: it does not balance game and teammate audio.

SteelSeries assigns Sidetone control to the Nova 7P in the support comparison. The 7P remains compatible with PC, PS4 and PS5, but it is not the only PlayStation option. Choose it when hearing your own voice is more valuable to you than a dedicated game/chat balance control.

How the two wireless connections work together

Each original Nova 7-family headset combines a 2.4 GHz wireless connection through its USB transmitter with Bluetooth. SteelSeries says the Nova 7 can maintain both connections at the same time, allowing game audio to arrive over 2.4 GHz while a phone supplies music, notifications or a call over Bluetooth. The two streams can be mixed rather than forcing you to disconnect one source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical two-device example

  1. Connect the headset to your console or computer through its matching 2.4 GHz transmitter.
  2. Pair a phone over Bluetooth.
  3. Play the game through the low-latency wireless link while listening for phone audio through Bluetooth.
  4. Adjust the relative levels using the headset’s controls and the source devices’ volume settings.

The microphone has an important limitation. It cannot transmit your voice to both sources simultaneously. When a Bluetooth call is active, the microphone serves that call; it does not send the same microphone feed to the game chat and the phone call at once. Plan your use around one active microphone destination.

Bluetooth availability is shared across the three original models, so it does not distinguish Nova 7 from 7P or 7X. The meaningful distinctions remain Xbox support, the physical control assignment and the identity of the required transmitter.

Transmitter and replacement rules

Every headset needs its dedicated Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X transmitter. SteelSeries lists separate replacement transmitters for the three models rather than one universal unit. Match the replacement to the exact headset name.

If the transmitter is missing

  • Identify the headset printed on the product, packaging or purchase record.
  • Buy a transmitter specified for that same model family member.
  • Do not assume a Nova 7P transmitter is interchangeable with a Nova 7 transmitter.
  • For a Nova 7X, use a Nova 7X transmitter so the Xbox-compatible system remains intact.

A transmitter replacement can restore the wireless link for the correct headset, but it cannot change the headset’s platform capabilities. SteelSeries’ support answer is explicit that Xbox compatibility is built into the particular model and cannot be added with a different dongle.

What this means for secondhand listings

A used headset advertised without its transmitter is not equivalent to a complete kit. Budget for the model-specific replacement and verify that it is actually available for your region before buying. A listing that includes an apparently similar Nova transmitter may still be incomplete if the model numbers do not match.

Check the headset and transmitter labels separately. “Nova 7” and “Nova 7X” are not interchangeable names, and a seller’s generic reference to a Nova wireless dongle does not establish compatibility.

Battery figures and the generation trap

Original Nova 7 family

In its August 23, 2022 launch announcement, SteelSeries advertised up to 38 hours of battery life for the original Nova 7 family. The same announcement advertised six hours of use after a 15-minute fast charge. These are manufacturer-published claims, not independent measurements; actual runtime varies with volume, wireless mode, microphone use and battery age.

The 38-hour and six-hour figures belong to the original Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X generation discussed here. They should not be copied into a listing or comparison for a newer product without checking its model and generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nova 7 Gen 2

SteelSeries’ current product materials also present a Nova 7 Gen 2 family. That page advertises more than 50 hours of battery life and mobile-app control. Those are Gen 2 claims and must not be attributed to an original Nova 7, Nova 7P or Nova 7X.

When a retailer uses a shortened name such as “Nova 7,” inspect the product photographs, model suffix and generation description. Mixing the original 38-hour specification with the Gen 2 50-plus-hour claim produces an inaccurate comparison and can lead you to buy the wrong replacement transmitter or accessory.

Which model should you buy?

Choose Nova 7X when Xbox is required

Make the 7X your default choice if you own an Xbox now, share a headset between Xbox and another platform, or want to preserve that option for a future console. It retains ChatMix and also covers the PC and PlayStation platforms listed by SteelSeries.

Choose Nova 7 for PC and PlayStation with ChatMix

The original Nova 7 fits a PC-and-PlayStation setup when Xbox is not part of the plan and you want ChatMix. It provides the same family-level Bluetooth and simultaneous 2.4 GHz/Bluetooth behavior described by SteelSeries, without the Xbox designation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Nova 7P for Sidetone

Select the 7P when your priority is hearing your own microphone voice. It is a sensible PlayStation-oriented choice for people who monitor their speaking level, provided they do not need Xbox compatibility. Its Sidetone control is the defining functional difference from the Nova 7 and Nova 7X.

If you switch platforms regularly

Write down every platform you expect to use before comparing prices. If Xbox appears anywhere on that list, restrict the shortlist to Nova 7X. If the list contains only PC and PlayStation, decide between ChatMix on Nova 7 and Nova 7X versus Sidetone on Nova 7P, then confirm the generation.

If you mainly use a phone with your console

All three original models support Bluetooth, so phone connectivity does not choose among them. Focus instead on the console list and the microphone-control preference. Remember that a Bluetooth call takes control of the microphone for that call rather than broadcasting to both connected sources.

Choosing by household setup

A single-platform PC player can reasonably choose either Nova 7 or Nova 7P. The decision is not about basic wireless access, because both use the same style of 2.4 GHz connection and both include Bluetooth. It is about which control solves a recurring annoyance: ChatMix for rapidly changing the game-to-chat balance, or Sidetone for monitoring your own voice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PlayStation-only household has the same choice. Do not pay a premium or accept a limited listing simply because it calls the 7P a “PlayStation model”; SteelSeries lists PS4 and PS5 support for the Nova 7 and Nova 7X as well. The 7P is a preference-based variant, not a PlayStation requirement.

A mixed-console household should start with the 7X. Even if the headset will spend most of its time on a PC or PlayStation, Xbox compatibility is listed only for that model. This avoids having to replace the headset when the console mix changes. You still receive ChatMix, while the 7P’s Sidetone control is unavailable on the 7X.

For a buyer who wants a phone connected while gaming, all three original versions meet the basic requirement. The simultaneous connection is a family feature, not a reason to select one suffix over another. The remaining questions are platform coverage, control preference and whether the included transmitter matches the headset.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Confirm the exact suffix: 7, 7P or 7X should appear consistently in the listing and photographs.
  • Confirm platforms: Xbox requires 7X; PC, PS4 and PS5 are listed for all three.
  • Confirm the control: Nova 7 and 7X use ChatMix; Nova 7P uses Sidetone.
  • Confirm the generation: Original models use the 2022-era specifications; Gen 2 is a separate family.
  • Confirm the transmitter: New or used packages should include the matching model-specific dongle, or the seller should identify its absence.
  • Confirm the battery claim’s source: 38 hours and six hours after a 15-minute charge are advertised original-generation figures; more than 50 hours belongs to Gen 2 materials.

Retail pricing, stock and regional SKU names change, so verify those details on the seller’s current page. No independent comparative test establishes that one of these three original models has longer real-world battery life or better wireless performance than the others; the documented differences are compatibility, controls, shared wireless features and transmitter identity.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming “P” means the only PlayStation model

The 7P label does not indicate exclusive PlayStation compatibility. SteelSeries lists PS4 and PS5 support for Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X. The P model’s distinguishing feature is Sidetone control.

Buying a 7P for Xbox because it includes Bluetooth

Bluetooth is not the same as Xbox wireless compatibility. The official comparison lists Xbox only for Nova 7X. A Bluetooth connection to another device does not change that platform limitation.

Trying to solve compatibility with a spare dongle

Transmitters are model-specific. An X transmitter cannot add Xbox support to a Nova 7 or Nova 7P, and a similarly named transmitter may not pair with the headset you own.

Mixing original and Gen 2 specifications

Battery and app-control claims differ by generation. Treat the original 2022 family and Nova 7 Gen 2 as separate products when reading specifications or shopping listings.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nova 7X the only one that works with Xbox?

Yes, for the original family covered here, SteelSeries’ comparison lists Xbox compatibility for Nova 7X only. Nova 7 and Nova 7P are listed for PC, PS4 and PS5 but not Xbox.

Is Nova 7P required for PS5?

No. SteelSeries lists PS5 and PS4 compatibility for all three original models. The 7P’s reason to exist in this comparison is its Sidetone control, which lets you hear your own microphone voice.

Which models have ChatMix?

Nova 7 and Nova 7X have ChatMix controls. ChatMix balances incoming game audio against voice-chat audio. Nova 7P uses a Sidetone control instead.

Can I use Bluetooth and the transmitter at once?

Yes. The original Nova 7 family supports simultaneous Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz connections. For example, game audio can use the transmitter while a phone supplies music or a call, and the streams can be mixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the microphone work in the game and on a phone call simultaneously?

No. When a Bluetooth call is active, the microphone serves that call; it does not transmit the same microphone signal to both sources at once.

Will a Nova 7X dongle make my Nova 7 work on Xbox?

No. SteelSeries says Xbox compatibility is built into the specific headset model and cannot be added with a different transmitter. Use a transmitter that matches your headset, but do not expect it to change platform compatibility.

What battery life should I expect?

SteelSeries advertised 38 hours for the original family and six hours of use after a 15-minute charge in its August 23, 2022 announcement. These are advertised claims, not independent measurements. The newer Nova 7 Gen 2 page advertises more than 50 hours, so check the generation before comparing figures.

Are replacement transmitters interchangeable?

No. SteelSeries lists separate Nova 7, Nova 7P and Nova 7X transmitters. Match the transmitter to the exact headset model, especially when buying secondhand or replacing a missing dongle.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Does the 7X have Sidetone?

The cited support comparison assigns ChatMix to Nova 7X and Sidetone to Nova 7P. If dedicated Sidetone control is your priority, choose the 7P, provided Xbox is not required.

The practical verdict

For the original family, platform needs decide first: Nova 7X for Xbox, Nova 7 or 7X for ChatMix, and Nova 7P for Sidetone. All three cover PC and PlayStation according to SteelSeries’ support comparison, all include Bluetooth, and all can combine Bluetooth with 2.4 GHz audio. The transmitter must match the headset model, and no dongle swap can turn a non-X model into an Xbox headset. Finally, verify that any battery figure belongs to the original generation rather than the newer Nova 7 Gen 2 line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which models have ChatMix?

Nova 7 and Nova 7X have ChatMix for balancing game and voice-chat audio. Nova 7P has Sidetone instead.

Can Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz audio run together?

Yes. The original family supports simultaneous Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz connections, with streams that can be mixed.

Can one microphone feed serve a game and a phone call at the same time?

No. During a Bluetooth call, the microphone serves the call rather than transmitting to both sources.

Can an X transmitter add Xbox support to another Nova headset?

No. Xbox compatibility is built into the specific headset model, and transmitters are model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What battery figures apply to the original models?

SteelSeries advertised 38 hours and six hours after a 15-minute charge for the original family in its August 23, 2022 announcement. These are manufacturer claims.

Are Nova 7, 7P and 7X transmitters interchangeable?

No. Use the replacement transmitter identified for the exact headset model.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy Nova 7X when Xbox is in the picture. Choose Nova 7 for PC/PlayStation and ChatMix, or Nova 7P when Sidetone is more useful. All three original models support PC, PS4, PS5, Bluetooth and simultaneous 2.4 GHz/Bluetooth audio, but each needs its own transmitter. Check the generation carefully: the original family’s advertised battery figures are 38 hours and six-hour fast charging, while 50-plus hours belongs to Nova 7 Gen 2.
