Choose the SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds if you want a supplied 2.4 GHz dongle for console or PC gaming; choose the Sony WF-1000XM5 if Bluetooth listening features such as multipoint and LDAC matter more. If you want GameBuds for Xbox, buy the Xbox version: its dongle supports Xbox as well as a second mode for PlayStation and PC. The PlayStation version’s dongle is for PlayStation and PC.
This is a feature-based recommendation, not a measured head-to-head verdict: no controlled comparison of sound, noise canceling, microphone quality, comfort, or gaming latency is available here.

Which earbuds fit your setup?
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Console gaming with a supplied wireless transmitter | SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds | They include a 2.4 GHz dongle alongside Bluetooth 5.3 and can switch between connections. SteelSeries describes the 2.4 GHz connection as intended for low-latency gaming, but no comparable measured latency figure is established for these two products. SteelSeries product details; Sony WF-1000XM5 Help Guide. |
| Xbox, PlayStation, and PC dongle use | Xbox version of the GameBuds | SteelSeries says the Xbox model’s dongle has Xbox mode and a second mode for PlayStation and PC. The PlayStation model’s dongle is single-mode for PlayStation and PC. SteelSeries support. |
| Bluetooth listening features | Sony WF-1000XM5 | Sony lists multipoint and SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 codec support. Its cited specifications document Bluetooth, not a supplied gaming dongle. Sony specifications. |
| Game-specific presets and console-oriented features | SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds | SteelSeries advertises more than 100 PS5 audio presets through its companion app, spatial audio, active noise cancellation, and transparency mode. SteelSeries product details. |
Neither set of specifications proves a universal sound-quality winner. Your console, connection needs, fit, and listening habits are more useful decision points than a blanket ranking.

GameBuds: 2.4 GHz plus Bluetooth
The GameBuds combine a 2.4 GHz dongle connection with Bluetooth 5.3. SteelSeries says a triple tap switches between the connections, which is useful if you want a gaming connection for a console or PC and Bluetooth for another device. Check compatibility for the exact console and GameBuds version before buying; the PlayStation and Xbox dongles are not interchangeable in their console modes. WF-1000XM5: Bluetooth-focused

Battery estimates are measured under different conditions
| Model | Manufacturer battery claim | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds | 10 hours per charge; up to 40 hours total with the case | SteelSeries’ product-page footnote says: “Based on 2.4GHz connection with noise control off.” Manufacturer estimate, not an independent comparison. SteelSeries product details. |
| Sony WF-1000XM5 | Up to 8 hours of music playback with noise canceling on, or up to 12 hours with it off | Sony says actual charging and usage hours vary with conditions. These are Sony’s stated estimates, not a controlled comparison with SteelSeries. Sony specifications; Sony Help Guide. |
SteelSeries also advertises three hours of play after a 15-minute charge. That quick-charge claim appears on its GameBuds product page. SteelSeries product details.

Fit, controls, and everyday protection
Fit and controls
SteelSeries includes small, medium, and large ear tips. In TechRadar’s 2026 gaming-earbud roundup, its reviewer said third-party foam tips gave them a better fit and that the on-ear controls took more pressure to actuate than they preferred. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee of how the GameBuds will fit or feel for you. Specific third-party tip compatibility is not established, so confirm a replacement’s fit before purchasing. TechRadar roundup.
Water resistance
SteelSeries advertises IP55 protection for the GameBuds. Sony specifies IPX4-equivalent protection for the WF-1000XM5 earbuds, with qualifications for specified openings; Sony says the charging case is not water resistant. Neither rating means the earbuds should be submerged. SteelSeries product details; Sony specifications.

Price and availability depend on market and listing
Prices can vary by country, color, retailer, and date. On October 4, 2026, Sony’s US product page showed the Smoky Pink WF-1000XM5 at $279.99, reduced from $329.99, alongside an email-availability control. That dated listing is not a stable price or a promise of stock for other colors, retailers, or countries. Sony US product page.
How to make the final choice
- Choose GameBuds for console gaming when the supplied 2.4 GHz dongle is central to your setup. For Xbox, select the Xbox version; for PlayStation and PC, the PlayStation version is designed for those platforms.
- Choose the WF-1000XM5 for Bluetooth features if multipoint and LDAC are more important to you than a supplied gaming transmitter.
- Try the fit if possible before committing. Included tip sizes and one reviewer’s experience cannot predict comfort for every ear.
- Compare current local listings rather than treating a dated price or availability display as universal.
There is no controlled head-to-head result here for sound quality, noise canceling, microphones, comfort, or latency. TechRadar’s gaming-earbud roundup covers the GameBuds in a broader category context, while What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 comparison with the newer WF-1000XM6 describes the WF-1000XM5 as an older flagship; neither establishes a universal winner in this specific matchup.
