Which gaming earbuds are better? Neither is a proven overall winner on the available comparable evidence. The most decisive difference is console compatibility: SteelSeries offers an Xbox-specific Arctis GameBuds edition, while Razer lists the Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed for PC, PlayStation, Switch and mobile—not Xbox. If Xbox support is essential, choose the GameBuds Xbox edition. Otherwise, compare the connection and features below, and treat sound, ANC, microphone and comfort as questions that require a credible test of these exact models.
Check console compatibility first
SteelSeries sells Arctis GameBuds in Xbox and PlayStation editions, and the dongle differs by edition. SteelSeries says the PlayStation version uses a single-mode dongle for PlayStation and PC. The Xbox version has a dual-mode dongle with Xbox and PlayStation/PC modes. Xbox buyers should confirm that a listing explicitly names the Xbox edition; the PlayStation edition is not the one to select for Xbox. SteelSeries’ GameBuds FAQ explains the modes.

Razer’s support page identifies the Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed as model RZ12-0459 and lists PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and mobile compatibility. Xbox compatibility is not listed there, so do not assume it will work with an Xbox console. Check the connection requirements for the specific device and game before buying. Razer’s product page and Razer’s model-specific support FAQ give the published compatibility details.

Both products offer 2.4 GHz dongle audio for gaming and Bluetooth for other devices. SteelSeries advertises 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth 5.3. Razer specifies Bluetooth 5.3 and a USB-C 2.4 GHz dongle. That gives each a way to switch between a gaming connection and Bluetooth use, but the right choice depends on whether the dongle suits your console, PC or mobile device.

Razer’s 2023 launch announcement claimed under 40 ms latency over the dongle. That is a manufacturer launch claim, not a comparable independent measurement against the GameBuds. Razer’s launch announcement also describes the original Pro HyperSpeed; do not confuse it with other Hammerhead HyperSpeed or Hammerhead V3 products.
Battery life and charging
The published battery figures are not a like-for-like test. SteelSeries advertises up to 10 hours per charge and up to 40 hours total with the case. Razer’s 2023 launch announcement says the case adds 24 hours, but does not provide a directly matched total under the same stated conditions. These manufacturer figures do not establish which pair lasts longer in equivalent use.

Both cases support wireless charging. SteelSeries specifies Qi charging; Razer describes its case as Qi-compatible and also lists USB-C charging. A wireless charging pad is optional, not required to use either product.

SteelSeries lists IP55 protection for the GameBuds, while Razer lists IPX4 for the Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed. These are the manufacturers’ stated ratings, not results from a comparative test. Razer’s IPX4 rating does not state a dust-protection rating; SteelSeries’ IP55 listing specifies both dust and water protection. Follow each manufacturer’s care guidance rather than treating either rating as a guarantee for every exposure.

Both manufacturers describe noise-control features. SteelSeries lists active noise cancellation and transparency; Razer lists app-adjustable hybrid ANC. The published specifications establish that these modes are offered, but not which earbuds cancel more noise or sound better. No controlled head-to-head ANC result for these exact products is established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sound, microphone, fit and comfort: no proven winner
There is no verified controlled comparison here that establishes a winner for sound quality, microphone performance, ANC effectiveness, fit or comfort. Features such as SteelSeries’ more than 100 game audio presets indicate customization options, not measured superiority. Razer’s driver and codec specifications likewise do not settle how the earbuds perform in real use. If those qualities are decisive, seek a review that tests both exact models under comparable conditions and describes its method.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Arctis GameBuds Xbox edition if Xbox compatibility is a requirement. Verify the edition in the product listing before purchase.
- Consider either pair if your priority is 2.4 GHz gaming plus Bluetooth. Confirm the dongle and console mode work with your actual setup.
- Compare the published specifications if IP rating or charging matters: GameBuds list IP55 and Qi charging; Razer lists IPX4 and a Qi-compatible case with USB-C charging.
- Do not choose based on a claimed sound, ANC, microphone or comfort winner unless you find comparable testing of these exact models.
No current local price or stock comparison is established here. Razer’s $199.99 USD figure was its launch MSRP in 2023, not a verified current retail price; check availability and pricing in your region before making a value comparison. Razer’s launch announcement gives that historical figure.
