Keep Steel Cable until your current crafting screen and tracked objectives show that you have enough. A recently checked item reference lists Steel Cable as a Rare scavenged material, with one Steel Cable and one Mechanical Component shown for a Utility Station 2 Zipline. It also reports one Wire when recycled and one Rubber Part when salvaged. Those values are live-game data, not permanent guarantees: open the item tooltip and the recipe in your current client before processing anything.
The same rule applies to Wires, Steel Spring, and every other resource: compare visible recipe demand, quest or project demand, your stock, and the exact recycle and salvage yields. Similar names or rarity colors are not reliable reasons to keep or discard an item.

The short answer: keep enough for visible needs, then process only excess
There is no safe “recycle every Rare item” rule in Arc Raiders. Your stash decision should be based on what the current client asks you to build or track, not on rarity alone. Before touching a Steel Cable, check three places:

If none of those checks consumes the cable and you already have the components needed for upcoming work, process only the surplus. Recheck after a patch, because recipes, objectives, and outputs can change.

What the current Steel Cable reference reports
Rarity and source
A recently updated community item reference classifies Steel Cable as a Rare material and lists scavenging as a source. “Rare” describes the item’s classification; it does not establish that the item is harder to replace than every Uncommon material or that it is safe to dismantle. Availability depends on where and how you scavenge, and the reference is subject to live-game changes.
Reported Utility Station 2 recipe
The checked item page currently lists a Utility Station 2 Zipline recipe requiring one Steel Cable and one Mechanical Component. Treat this as a database-reported recipe to verify, not as a universal rule for every crafting context. Recent player discussion describes a possible difference between workshop crafting and an in-raid Zipline interaction, while the official patch notes reviewed for this guide do not resolve that distinction. Open the relevant crafting screen in your own client and follow the ingredients shown there.
Reported processing outputs
The same reference reports two different actions and outputs:
- Recycle: one Wire.
- Salvage: one Rubber Part.
Recycle and salvage are not interchangeable labels. They can produce different materials, so select the action based on the component you need. If your tooltip displays a different quantity or result, trust the live tooltip and treat the older listing as outdated.
Reported quest and project status
The item reference reports no current quest or project requirement for Steel Cable. That status can change independently of the item’s crafting recipe. Before a run, inspect active objectives and workshop upgrades; a newly added requirement takes priority over a static item-page note.
Recycle, salvage, sell, and drop are separate inventory decisions
Embark Studios’ Live Update 1.33.0 (June 16, 2026) added “input shortcuts to the inventory action menu: Sell, Recycle, Repair (gamepad only), Salvage and Drop.” The update confirms that these actions are available from the inventory interface, but it does not define the yield for every item. Use the action menu as the place to verify the current result rather than assuming all materials behave alike.
Recycle
Recycling converts an item into another crafting component. For Steel Cable, the checked listing says the result is one Wire. Choose this when the displayed Wire output addresses an immediate recipe, quest, or workshop need.

Salvage
Salvaging breaks an item into a different component. The reported Steel Cable result is one Rubber Part. Salvage is preferable only when Rubber Parts are the bottleneck you can see in the current client.
Sell
Selling removes the item in exchange for the value shown by the game. The available item information does not establish a Steel Cable sale value, so inspect the confirmation screen before using this option. Do not sell a cable merely because neither processing output is useful today; a visible recipe can make the item more valuable than its sale return.
Drop
Dropping frees space without giving you a component or currency. Use it only when the item has no visible recipe, objective, or useful action result and you need the slot immediately. A drop is the least recoverable choice.
Steel Cable compared with other crafting materials
Use the same six questions for every material: What recipe needs it? Is an objective or project asking for it? How many do you already hold? What does the live recycle tooltip show? What does the live salvage tooltip show? Do you need either resulting component now?

The comparison shows why rarity is a poor inventory policy. Steel Spring is Uncommon yet tied to multiple named recipes, while Steel Cable is Rare but may be expendable once your visible requirements are covered. The item’s own uses matter more than its color.
A safe Steel Cable workflow
Step 1: Open the item action menu
From your inventory, highlight Steel Cable and open the action menu. The current interface supports Sell, Recycle, Repair where applicable, Salvage, and Drop shortcuts. Do not confirm an action yet.
Step 2: Check every active objective
Review tracked quests, projects, workshop upgrades, and any objective list that can consume materials. If Steel Cable is named, reserve the required amount plus only the buffer you can justify for another visible task. If no objective lists it, continue to the recipe check; the absence of a listed objective is not proof that none can appear later.

Step 3: Inspect the live crafting recipe
At the relevant station, search for Steel Cable in the ingredient list. For the reported Utility Station 2 Zipline, verify both the cable count and the Mechanical Component count in the current screen. If the client presents a separate in-raid interaction, read that interaction’s ingredients independently rather than copying the workshop requirement.

Step 4: Compare your stock with the requirement
Subtract the amount needed for visible recipes and objectives from your current stack. Keep the required amount; classify only the remainder as potential surplus. If you are close to a requirement, keeping one extra cable can prevent a later scavenging trip, but do not treat an arbitrary buffer as mandatory.
Step 5: Read both processing previews
Select Recycle and note the exact output, then select Salvage and note its output. On the checked listing these are one Wire and one Rubber Part respectively, but your client’s preview is authoritative. Choose the action whose result solves a current bottleneck.
Step 6: Confirm one small batch first
When the item is plentiful, process a single surplus cable and verify that the resulting component and quantity match the preview. This catches misunderstandings about which action is selected and limits the cost of a changed recipe or interface label.
Step 7: Recheck after updates
Patch notes can add recipes, alter outputs, or introduce objectives. After a major update, repeat the recipe and tooltip checks before clearing a large stash. Keep a screenshot or note of the quantities only as a temporary reminder; it cannot replace the live client after a change.

How to decide what to do with Wires
Wires are a common trap because recycling Steel Cable can create them, yet Wires themselves are described as an Uncommon Topside Material with several crafting uses and possible quest or workshop relevance. If you recycle a cable for Wire, immediately compare that Wire’s uses with your plans. A Wire that is needed for a near-term recipe is a useful conversion; a Wire that merely increases a full stack may create a new storage problem.
- Keep Wires named in an active recipe, quest, project, or workshop upgrade.
- Check the Wire action menu before processing a surplus; no universal output is established here.
- If your Wire stack is already above every visible requirement, process only the excess and retain enough room for the next run’s scavenging.
How to decide what to do with Steel Spring
Steel Spring demonstrates why “Uncommon means disposable” is unsafe. Its item reference lists recipes for Advanced Mechanical Components and Shrapnel Grenade, and advises keeping it for quests or workshop upgrades where applicable. Before salvaging or recycling, open those recipe trees and count the springs required for the items you actually intend to craft.

- Check whether an Advanced Mechanical Component is part of your next build.
- Check the Shrapnel Grenade recipe if that grenade is in your loadout plan.
- Review workshop upgrades and objectives for a Steel Spring requirement.
- Only after those checks, compare the live processing outputs and convert the surplus.
When the Zipline information conflicts
A Utility Station 2 listing and a possible in-raid crafting distinction can both appear in player-facing information without proving that the same ingredient list applies everywhere. The reliable question is not “Is Steel Cable always a Zipline ingredient?” but “What does the screen I am using right now require?”
- At a workshop: open the Utility Station 2 recipe and read the displayed ingredients.
- During a raid: inspect the in-raid Zipline interaction separately, if one is available.
- If the screens disagree: follow the context in which you intend to craft and avoid dismantling the cable until the discrepancy is resolved by a current game update or in-client text.
Do not combine the two contexts into a single universal recipe claim. The available official update information does not settle the difference.

Fix: search recipes and objectives first, then process only the calculated surplus.

- What exact output does Recycle show right now?
- What exact output does Salvage show right now?
- Which output is needed for your next confirmed build?
- Would selling or dropping remove an item you cannot easily replace?
- Has a recent update changed the recipe or action menu?
If you can answer those questions, the decision is straightforward: reserve the amount tied to a visible need and process only the remainder. If an answer is unknown, keep the item until the client supplies it.
