Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart ranks the top 100 games by revenue, not by copies sold, player count or play time. It is best read like a live music chart: a snapshot of what is earning the most on Steam, with positions that can change over time.
What Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart measures
Steam describes the page as “Top 100 selling games right now, by revenue.” Its ranking uses total revenue from a game and related purchases, including editions, downloadable content (DLC) and in-game transactions. Steam also says a DLC item can appear as its own entry if it sells well enough. Steam explained the chart’s revenue basis in its September 22, 2022 announcement.

That means a free-to-play game can rank highly because players are buying paid content, even if the chart does not show large sales of the base game. A high position is evidence of revenue performance within the chart, not a published sales-unit total.

How to read the chart
- Rank: the entry’s current position in the revenue-based list.
- Price: the listed price or free-to-play status shown for that entry when you view the chart. Prices and discounts can change.
- Change: the number of positions the entry moved compared with the previous week, according to Steam. It shows movement, not why it happened.
- Weeks: how many weeks the game has appeared on the Top Sellers chart. This is a longevity signal, not a measure of total revenue or player count.
Steam has not detailed the exact live revenue window, refund treatment or tie-breaking method in the cited announcement. The visible rank should not be treated as a precise revenue estimate.

Choose the right chart and geography
Steam Charts includes several distinct views, including Top Sellers, Most Played, Steam Deck, weekly charts, monthly top releases and best-of-year charts. Top Sellers is revenue-based; Most Played is a different measure, and the Steam Deck view is its own chart. Steam’s Charts page groups these options.
The Top Sellers chart can show a global list or country-specific lists. Steam says a country-specific view may be selected by default based on a user’s location, and the controls let users switch to global or another country. When reporting a position, name the geography and the date you checked it.

Why the order changes
Because the ranking reflects revenue, positions can move as purchases and spending change. Steam’s weekly-change field tells you how many places an entry shifted since the previous week; it does not identify a cause. Promotions, new editions or player spending may be relevant context, but the rank alone does not establish which factor drove a move.
Likewise, weeks on chart adds context about persistence without revealing how much revenue an entry earned or how many people are playing. Treat both fields as clues about chart movement and longevity, not as explanations or audience statistics.

How to report a Top Sellers snapshot accurately
- Open Steam Charts and select Top Sellers.
- Check whether the displayed list is global or country-specific; switch views if needed.
- Record the date and, if relevant, the listed price or discount. These live details can change.
- Describe the ranking as a revenue-based snapshot, not a ranking of copies sold or players.
For example, Steam’s captured chart snapshot placed AION 2 first, Counter-Strike 2 second and EA SPORTS FC 27 third. Those positions describe that snapshot only, not a permanent order; consult the live chart for today’s ranks.
