It is Valve’s Arch Linux-based operating system, with a KDE Plasma desktop mode where users can install other launchers and software. Its official support and guidance remain focused on gaming and specific supported devices.
What SteamOS is—and what it is not
SteamOS combines an Arch Linux-based system with Valve software, including the Steam Client. That makes it a Linux operating system with a familiar desktop environment, but not simply a generic Arch installation. The downloadable image is not wholly open source: the system includes open-source components, while the Steam Client is proprietary and subject to its own license terms.

In its SteamOS FAQ, Valve says: “Users should not consider SteamOS as a replacement for their desktop operating system.” That warning matters if you rely on a particular work application, peripheral, or workflow. Desktop mode makes ordinary computer use possible; it does not guarantee that every desktop program or device will work as it does on another operating system.

SteamOS includes a standard desktop mode, and Valve says users can install other launchers and software there. It can therefore serve for web browsing, media, and compatible Linux applications, as well as accessing Steam. Whether it suits your routine depends on the specific applications and hardware you need—not merely on the fact that it has a desktop.

For games, Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs through Proton, the compatibility layer used to run many Windows games on Linux. Valve’s FAQ also reports “over 18,000 titles last we checked.” The page does not specify when that count was checked, so it is not a dated, independently verified current total or a promise that a particular game will work. Check the SteamOS compatibility information for the games you care about; Valve’s Verified program flags games that do not work well.
Can you install SteamOS on a PC?
Valve provides a PC installation image through its SteamOS download page. Availability of an image does not mean every PC is supported. Valve officially names Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Legion Go S as devices “Powered by SteamOS.” Its FAQ also notes improved compatibility with other AMD-powered handhelds and desktops in SteamOS 3.8, but that is not universal hardware certification.

Before installing on an existing PC, check Valve’s current support guidance for the exact model and components. Also consider whether your essential games, desktop applications, Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, and other peripherals are compatible. A system that boots is not necessarily a system that supports your everyday setup.
Choosing between a Steam Deck and a PC installation
| Consideration | Steam Deck | Installing on an existing PC |
|---|---|---|
| Official device status | Steam Deck is an officially supported SteamOS device. | Support depends on the specific hardware; improved compatibility is not a blanket guarantee. |
| Setup | SteamOS comes installed, so there is no PC installation step. | You install the image yourself and must verify compatibility and follow Valve’s current instructions. |
| Form factor | A handheld that can also connect to an external display. | Uses the form factor and components of the PC you install it on. |
| Best fit | Readers who want a ready-made SteamOS handheld and optional desktop-style use. | Readers willing to check hardware support and configure an installation on their own machine. |
Neither route removes the need to check game and application compatibility. Choose based on whether you want a supported handheld device or are prepared to assess an existing PC against Valve’s current guidance.

Using a Steam Deck as a desktop
A Steam Deck OLED is one way to use SteamOS without installing it on another computer. Valve lists the device as running SteamOS 3, based on Arch, with KDE Plasma desktop mode. Its specifications include USB-C DisplayPort output, allowing connection to an external display. A keyboard, mouse, and dock can make a desk-style setup more practical, but Valve’s specifications do not guarantee compatibility with every third-party dock or peripheral. Check the accessories you plan to use.
A Deck is optional, not a prerequisite for trying SteamOS: Valve also provides a PC installation image. The choice is between a ready-made SteamOS device and an installation whose hardware compatibility you must evaluate.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Understand the download license
Valve’s download page describes SteamOS as based on Arch Linux, but the image also contains the proprietary Steam Client. The Steam Client Backup Image terms grant a personal-use license and prohibit redistribution without a separate license from Valve. Do not assume that the entire image has the same open-source license as its underlying system components, or redistribute a copy without checking those terms.
