Valve has released SteamOS 3.9.3 to the Beta and Preview channels with its headline change described as “Improved support for Steam Frame wireless adapter.” The build is intended for testing, not the ordinary stable channel. It also advances the wider Steam Machine-to-Steam Frame streaming path, including a fix for frame limiting being applied incorrectly to virtual-reality titles.
What SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta changes
The release notes identify the wireless-adapter improvement as a general SteamOS change. Valve has not published a latency, throughput or reliability measurement for the adapter in these notes, so the update should be understood as compatibility and software-support work rather than a quantified performance upgrade.

The change is linked to Steam Machine streaming. SteamOS 3.9 fixes a problem in which the frame limiter could be applied incorrectly to VR titles when streaming from a Steam Machine to Steam Frame. That matters because frame pacing in a streamed VR session can affect motion quality and responsiveness; the release note confirms the bug fix but does not provide a benchmark.
Other fixes and platform work in the 3.9 branch
SteamOS 3.9.3 is a point release on a larger 3.9 development line. The branch updates the Arch Linux base and moves Desktop Mode from Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3. Valve also lists fixes or improvements for the following areas:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Hidden Wi-Fi networks that failed to connect on the first attempt.
- Steam Remote Play on Steam Machine when no external display is attached.
- Variable-refresh-rate and frame-limiter behavior.
- Suspend and resume on systems using RDNA1 or RDNA2 graphics.
- Legion Go 2 support.
- ASUS firmware fan behavior.
- Game launches on Intel Panther Lake hardware.
- A GPU-error issue in The Crew Motorfest.
- Resume performance for STAR WARS: Galactic Racer on Steam Machine.
- Monitor-hotplug audio behavior, plus security and stability fixes.
- Reintroduced Android binder IPC support.
Developer-facing changes include a Linux kernel rebase to version 7.2, preliminary hibernation support, a wpa_supplicant default for new installations and improved accelerated-graphics support for virtual machines. These are branch-level changes; installing 3.9.3 does not mean every feature is mature or enabled on every device.
Does SteamOS 3.9.3 support the Steam Frame wireless adapter?
Yes, the Beta release explicitly improves support for the adapter. However, “support” has an important qualification. Valve’s Steam Frame Feature and Troubleshooting Guide says: “Full support for SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming via the wireless adapter are currently available on Windows only.” That statement means a Linux or SteamOS installation should not be treated as having the same fully supported streaming experience as Windows today.

The same guide says that, once Steam Frame ships, Linux-PC users of the wireless dongle will need SteamOS 3.9 or later, or a Linux kernel version 7.2 or later. SteamOS 3.9.3 meets that stated SteamOS requirement, but the documentation still limits full adapter streaming support to Windows at the time covered by the guide.
Windows and Linux requirements compared
| Setup | Required software stated by Valve | Documented support status | Relevant use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows; the guide does not specify a minimum Windows version in the cited statement | Full SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming via the wireless adapter currently documented | Steam Frame streaming and SteamVR workflows |
| Linux PC | Linux kernel 7.2 or later once Steam Frame ships | Kernel requirement is stated, while full adapter streaming support is currently documented for Windows only | Linux-PC adapter use subject to Valve’s evolving support |
| SteamOS device or Steam Machine | SteamOS 3.9 or later for the Linux requirement | 3.9.3 Beta improves adapter support and fixes a Steam Machine-to-Steam Frame VR frame-limiter issue | Streaming from Steam Machine to Steam Frame |

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Update Channel.
- Choose the Beta or Preview channel, then check for updates and install SteamOS 3.9.3 if it is offered for your device.
Because this is not a stable-channel announcement, users who depend on a handheld, Steam Machine or living-room PC for uninterrupted daily use should treat the channel switch as a testing decision. Back up important files and note your current update channel before changing it so you can return to the prior channel if a regression affects your hardware or games. The release notes do not promise that every listed fix applies uniformly across all SteamOS hardware.
Do you need SteamOS 3.9 for Steam Frame?
If you plan to use the wireless adapter from a Linux-based PC, Valve’s documented requirement is SteamOS 3.9 or newer, or Linux kernel 7.2 or newer. SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta therefore provides the required version line, but it is a pre-release build and the guide’s full-support statement still points to Windows. Users who need the most complete documented adapter path now should use a supported Windows setup; Linux users should verify current Valve guidance for their exact hardware and workflow before switching channels.

What this release does not establish
- It does not establish a retail price, stock status or verified retailer listing for the Steam Frame wireless adapter.
- It does not publish measured wireless latency, bandwidth or connection reliability.
- It does not announce that SteamOS 3.9.3 has moved to the stable channel.
- It does not remove the distinction between the Linux kernel requirement and Valve’s current Windows-only full-support wording.
The Bottom Line
SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta is a meaningful compatibility step for the Steam Frame wireless adapter and fixes Steam Machine-to-Steam Frame VR frame-limiter behavior, but it remains a Beta/Preview build. Linux users meet Valve’s stated SteamOS 3.9 or kernel 7.2 requirement, while full adapter streaming support is currently documented for Windows.
