The feature is a convenience path for loading APKs, not a promise that every Android app will install or run correctly.
What SteamOS 0.5.6 changes
The release adds “Allow .apk files in right-click ‘add to steam’ context menu in Desktop mode”. Previously, adding an Android package required using a separate loading procedure. With 0.5.6, an APK stored on the Steam Frame can be sent into the Steam library workflow directly from the desktop file manager.

This is specifically a Steam Frame Beta-channel change. It is not described as a stable SteamOS feature for every Steam device, and the release notes do not say that APK installation is universal or fully production-ready.

How to enable the beta and add an APK
- On Steam Frame, open Settings.
- Select System, then open System Update Channel.
- Choose the Steam Frame Beta channel and install SteamOS 0.5.6 when the update is offered. Keep the headset powered and connected as required by the update process.
- Switch to Desktop mode and locate the Android package file you want to load. The file must use the
.apkextension. - Right-click the APK. With the 0.5.6 beta feature enabled, choose the new option that allows APK files in the Add to Steam context menu.
- Return to the Steam library and check the resulting entry. Launch behavior depends on the application, its architecture, permissions and Steam Frame compatibility.
Steamworks also documents a separate “How to load APKs onto Steam” workflow for Steam Frame. The new context-menu command should be understood as a simpler entry point into APK loading rather than evidence that every package follows the same installation path.

What the feature does—and does not—promise
It is beta sideloading support
Valve’s wording describes a menu addition, while the release is distributed on the Steam Frame Beta channel. That makes this an early testing feature. Users should expect interface or behavior changes as Valve collects feedback and updates SteamOS.
APK compatibility remains app-specific
An APK is an Android application package, but packages can depend on particular CPU instructions, Android services, graphics APIs, input methods, sensors or licensing components. SteamOS 0.5.6 does not state that all APKs are compatible, and the notes do not guarantee that adding a file to Steam will result in a successful installation or launch. Treat each app as a separate compatibility case and keep the original APK available if you need to retry or remove it.

Adding a shortcut is not the same as validating an app
The right-click command reduces the number of manual steps needed to place an APK in the Steam library. It does not certify the package, convert it into a native Steam title or establish that its online services, updates and controller mappings will work on the headset.
Why Valve is adding Android APK support
Steam Frame is a standalone ARM-based VR headset running SteamOS. In a November 12, 2025 interview reported by PC Gamer, Valve engineer Jeff Leinbaugh said, “So we’re able to run arm APKs on this device as well.” Designer Lawrence Yang described allowing APKs on Steam as “a new thing that Steam will do.”

- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
The strategic reason is the headset’s ARM platform. Alongside Steam software, Steam Frame is intended to run Android-based VR applications and other ARM-targeted software. A lower-friction loading path can make experimentation easier for developers and users, while Valve has indicated that it may eventually welcome ARM developers and potentially list APK-based applications on Steam.
Other changes in SteamOS 0.5.6
| Area | Change in the Steam Frame Beta release | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| APK loading | APK files can appear in Desktop mode’s right-click Add to Steam context menu. | Fewer manual steps when placing an Android package into the Steam library. |
| Wireless adapter | Improved Steam Frame Wireless Adapter connection robustness. | Potentially more reliable wireless streaming connections from a host PC. |
| Performance overlay | Improved battery and memory reporting. | More useful headset status information while monitoring performance. |
| External microphones | Echo cancellation and noise suppression were added or improved for external microphones. | Cleaner voice capture in supported microphone setups. |
Steam Frame context for new users
The headset includes a 6GHz wireless adapter for streaming from a host PC. In Steam Frame’s desktop environment, the controller can act as a laser pointer; pressing the thumbstick provides a right-mouse click. Those controls are relevant when navigating the desktop file manager and opening the APK context menu without a conventional mouse.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Before switching to the beta channel
- Expect unfinished behavior: Beta-channel software is still being tested and can change between builds.
- Keep recovery options: Preserve the APK and any application data so you can reinstall after an update or compatibility failure.
- Check the app’s architecture: ARM-focused packages are the most relevant starting point for Steam Frame, but architecture alone does not guarantee operation.
- Separate library visibility from runtime support: Seeing an APK in Steam confirms that the loading path accepted the file, not that the app will launch or perform correctly.
- Plan for permissions and services: Apps that require Google services, unsupported sensors, specialized graphics features or device-specific authentication may need additional work or may not function.
What this means for developers
For developers targeting Android or ARM, the change signals that Valve is building a more visible path from an APK file to the Steam Frame library. It may lower the friction of distributing test builds to users and aligns with Valve’s stated interest in bringing ARM applications into the Steam ecosystem. Publishing, listing and commercial terms are separate questions; the 0.5.6 notes establish the loading feature, not a finalized APK storefront policy.

SteamOS 0.5.6 beta adds a right-click Desktop-mode route for putting Android APKs into a Steam Frame library. It makes sideloading easier, but compatibility and installation success remain app-dependent while the feature is tested in beta.
