It describes a Windows utility that controls Steam’s Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) and offers lightweight launch options, but publishes no memory measurements or benchmark method. The percentage should therefore be treated as an unverified claim, not an established result.
What SteamLite does
SteamLite is described as a small utility that loads as a DLL from the folder containing Steam’s executable. Its purpose, according to the project README, is “to condense Steam’s resource usage by controlling its CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework) and offering lightweight launch options.” CEF is the browser framework Steam uses for browser-based parts of its client.

The README lists three CEF settings: off, on, and automatic. Automatic mode turns CEF off while a game is running and back on when no game is running. Other listed options are launching Steam minimized, disabling joystick support, and disabling GPU use for CEF. The documentation does not explain the feature-by-feature consequences of turning CEF off, so it would be unsafe to assume that every Steam screen or browser-dependent function remains available in that mode.

How the CEF modes differ
| Mode | CEF while a game is running | CEF when no game is running | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off | Off | Off | CEF is disabled; the README does not enumerate which Steam features may be affected. |
| On | On | On | CEF remains enabled. |
| Automatic | Off | On | The project says CEF is disabled during gameplay and enabled when no game is running. |
SteamLite also says it creates or updates a desktop shortcut that launches Steam with the selected options. Its settings are stored in SteamLite.ini in the Steam root directory.

Is the 96% RAM reduction verified?
No—not by the project README reviewed for this article. The README provides no percentage reduction, RAM readings, baseline conditions, Steam or Windows version, hardware details, sample size, or reproducible test method. That means the documentation does not establish that SteamLite reduces memory use by 96%, nor that a user should expect that result. It also does not prove that no separate test exists; it means the claim is not substantiated in the reviewed project documentation.
Lowering memory pressure can matter on a system that is short on RAM, but the size of any benefit depends on what is running and how it is measured. Steam Support explains that when a system runs short of memory, the operating system may move some RAM contents to slower disk-based storage. That general explanation is not evidence that SteamLite achieves a particular reduction or improves game performance. Steam Support’s overlay performance-monitor FAQ provides that general context, not validation of the 96% figure.

How the project says to install and remove SteamLite
The following steps reflect the project README’s instructions; they have not been independently tested here. Check the current release notes and compatibility information before installing, because releases and Steam client compatibility can change.
- Download the latest release from the SteamLite GitHub Releases page.
- Place
user32.dllin the folder containingsteam.exe. - Start Steam and configure the available options.
- Close Steam, then use the SteamLite desktop shortcut to launch it with the saved options.
To remove SteamLite, the README says to delete user32.dll. To reset its saved configuration, the README separately says to delete SteamLite.ini from the Steam root directory. These are distinct actions: deleting the DLL removes the utility according to the project instructions, while deleting the INI resets its configuration.

What to check before relying on it
- Compatibility: Confirm that the current release supports your Steam installation and Windows setup. The reviewed README does not establish a tested Steam version or Windows version.
- CEF-dependent features: If you choose the off or automatic mode, verify that the Steam functions you need remain usable. The README lists modes but does not map them to specific screens or features.
- Actual memory use: Compare Steam’s memory use before and after changing a setting under similar conditions if you want to know whether it helps your PC. The project documentation supplies no benchmark result to apply to your system.
- Launch path: Use the shortcut SteamLite creates if you want Steam to launch with its chosen options, as instructed by the README.
Bottom line on SteamLite
SteamLite offers a documented way to control Steam CEF and several launch options, including automatically disabling CEF while a game runs. The reviewed project documentation does not show that it cuts Steam RAM usage by 96%. Treat that number as unverified, and consider the utility for its documented controls—not as a guaranteed memory or performance improvement.
