Steam still offers digital gift cards, while physical retail cards are being phased out. To send Steam credit, buy a digital gift card through Steam and select a friend; to redeem a physical card or Wallet code, sign in to the Steam account you want to fund and use Steam’s official redemption page. Gift value is added to a Wallet, not transferred as cash between accounts.
How to buy a Steam gift card
Digital gift cards
Steam’s digital gift-card page offers the current direct gifting route. Choose an amount, select a Steam friend, and complete the purchase. Steam Wallet funds already in your account cannot be used to buy a digital gift card. Some countries restrict sending or receiving gifts; Steam surfaces applicable restrictions during recipient selection or checkout. Steam’s gift-card FAQ explains the flow and limitations.

The recipient receives an email and an in-account notification. The value enters their Steam Wallet after they accept the gift. If they decline, Steam refunds the sender—back to the original payment method when supported, or otherwise to the sender’s Wallet. In rare cases, acceptance can trigger a Community Market restriction; Steam shows a warning before acceptance if that applies.

Physical cards are in a retail wind-down. Steam says it will not replenish retailers’ stock and expects remaining cards to sell out by the end of 2026. This is Steam’s forecast, not a guarantee that any particular store has stock. Cards already purchased remain redeemable, subject to local law. See Steam’s Wallet FAQ for its notice.

A physical card may suit someone who wants a tangible present, but availability is increasingly uncertain. For a direct Steam purchase, digital gifting avoids reliance on remaining retail stock, provided the recipient can receive a gift in their country.
How to redeem a Steam Wallet code
Steam requires you to be signed in to redeem a Wallet code. Open the official Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page while logged into the account you intend to fund. Steam’s published page confirms the sign-in requirement, but does not establish a complete sequence of button labels, so follow the current on-screen prompts rather than relying on a fixed step count.

Steam says a gift card or Wallet code can be redeemed for eligible purchases such as games, software, and other items sold on Steam. At redemption, its value converts to the currency of the account’s Steam Wallet, regardless of where the code was purchased. Steam’s redemption page describes the conversion and eligible use.
What Steam Wallet funds can buy
Accepted digital gift value goes into the recipient’s Wallet for use on Steam. Steam identifies games and supported micro-transactions as uses; Community Market purchases are also available when the account is not limited. Wallet funds are not required to download or play free-to-play games: Steam says those games can be accessed without a subscription or credit card, with Wallet money relevant only if the player chooses supported in-game purchases. Country restrictions and currency conversion
Digital gift-card availability is country-specific: some countries restrict sending or receiving cards. Check the recipient selection and checkout screens for the rule that applies to the transaction. For cross-country gifts that are permitted, Steam converts the value to the recipient’s currency. A physical code also converts at redemption into the currency of the Wallet being credited, regardless of its place of purchase.
Can you transfer Steam Wallet funds to another person?
No. Steam Wallet funds cannot be moved, traded, gifted, or automatically added to another account by a player. To give someone Steam credit, use Steam’s gift-card feature instead of attempting a balance transfer. Steam’s Wallet FAQ explains the transfer restriction.

Protect yourself from Wallet-credit scams
Steam’s trading interface does not support money transfers, including Wallet credit or gift cards. Treat offers to reimburse you later, add Wallet funds through a trade, or credit your account in exchange for an item or code as unsafe. Do not send a code or trade an item on that promise. Steam’s recommended trading practices warns against Wallet-credit claims in trades.
