Steam vs. Battle.net for Call of Duty on PC: Which Should You Choose?

Neither Steam nor Battle.net is universally better for installing and managing Call of Duty on PC. Choose Steam if you prefer its library and features; choose Battle.net if you already use Blizzard’s desktop app and want its game and social features in one place. Your Activision account is the key to carrying eligible progress across linked platforms, but progress does not establish that a game purchase transfers between storefronts.

What actually differs between Steam and Battle.net?

For Call of Duty, the main choice is which storefront and game library you want to use. Steam’s Call of Duty listing identifies an Activision account requirement and lists Steam achievements. Battle.net describes its desktop app as a place to launch games, follow news and updates, and message friends. These are platform features, not evidence that one launcher installs games faster or runs them more reliably.

Does Call of Duty progress transfer between Steam and Battle.net?

For games that support cross-progression, Activision says progress is stored on the Activision account rather than the platform account. Its Managing Your Activision Account guidance says progress carries across platforms linked to that account. Steam and Blizzard accounts can be linked to an Activision account.

#1 Best Overall
Call of Duty: Black Ops III - Standard Edition - PC
  • INTRODUCING A NEW ERA OF BLACK OPS: Call of Duty: Black Ops III takes place in a dark, gritty future where a new breed of Black Ops soldier emerges and the lines are blurred between our own humanity and the cutting-edge military robotics that define the future of combat.
  • A CALL OF DUTY CAMPAIGN UNLIKE ANYTHING BEFORE IT: Treyarch elevates the Call of Duty social gaming experience by delivering up to four player campaign co-op, using the same battle-tested network infrastructure and social systems that support its world-class Multiplayer and Zombies game modes.
  • PREPARE FOR A LEVELED-UP MULTIPLAYER: With Black Ops III, Treyarch premieres a new momentum-based chained-movement system, allowing players to fluidly move through the environment with finesse, using controlled thrust jumps, slides, and mantling abilities in a multitude of combinations, all while maintaining complete control over your weapon at all times.
  • FIGHT THE UNDEAD IN AN ALL-NEW HORROR STORY: No Treyarch title would be complete without its signature Zombies offering - a full-game experience with its own distinct storyline right out of the box. Black Ops III Zombies is the most immersive and ambitious Call of Duty Zombies to date, with a full XP-based progression system for players that adds depth and re-playability to the engaging gameplay Zombies fans have come to expect.

Use the same Activision account on both platforms. Linking a different Activision account will not carry the progress associated with the first one. Check that the particular Call of Duty game supports cross-progression; the account rule does not mean every game or every type of content is shared.

Does buying Call of Duty on one storefront give you access on the other?

Progression and ownership are separate. Activision’s account-linking guidance explains how eligible progress follows a linked Activision account; it does not establish that a purchase on Steam grants access through Battle.net, or vice versa. Before switching, check the target storefront to confirm you own the specific game and any content you expect to use there.

  • Experienced through the eyes of citizen soldiers and unsung heroes
  • Authentic squad movements and tactics

Will switching launchers require a reinstall?

Do not assume that changing launchers preserves an existing installation. Steam Support documented a library change for Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III: they moved out of the shared Call of Duty HQ library entry into separate game entries. That change required reinstalling those affected games, while saves, progression, and achievements transferred automatically. This is specific to those titles and that library change, not a rule for every Call of Duty release or every launcher switch. Check the current instructions for your game before removing files or starting a new installation.

How much storage should you allow?

Requirements vary by title and can change. At the time of access in 2026, Steam’s Call of Duty listing specified an SSD and 161 GB of available space at launch for the installation described on that listing. Treat that as a listing-specific launch requirement, not the current installed size of every Call of Duty game. Check the target game’s latest storefront requirements and leave additional room for updates.

How to choose

  • Pick Steam if you want Call of Duty in your Steam library and value Steam features such as achievements.
  • Pick Battle.net if you already organize Blizzard games there and want to use its app for launching games, news, updates, and messaging.
  • Before either choice, confirm ownership on the storefront you intend to use, link the correct Activision account, and check the specific game’s current installation requirements.

Official materials cited here do not establish a general Steam-versus-Battle.net advantage in frame rate, download speed, reliability, or patch parity. Choose based on library preference, account setup, and the game’s current storefront and installation details.
